On his podcast, Bill Simmons reported/speculated that the NBA will be expanding into the Las Vegas and Seattle markets. (Story here)If that happens, it would necessitate realignment to keep the conferences level. The simplest solution here would be to move the Timberwolves from the West's Northwest division, slot them into the East's Central Division, and put Seattle in the Northwest division; then repeat the process with Vegas taking Memphis' spot in the Southwest and Memphis moving into the Southeast. There are a couple problems though with this approach, firstly, it doesn't address some of the other alignment issues (Oklahoma City in the Northwest, for example). Also, owners in the East might not want a strong Memphis team moved into their conference (if the playoffs started today, Memphis' record would be good enough for the number one overall seed in the East). Personally, what I think would make the most sense is moving away from the traditional East-West alignment and to a North-South Alignment. They could have a three division North conference with a Northeast division consisting of the two New York teams, Toronto, Boston, DC, and Philly. A five team North Central that would be identical to the current Eastern conference Central division. And a Northwest conference with Portland, Golden State, Sacramento, the new Seattle franchise, and Minnesota. The South could have a Southeast with Memphis, Atlanta, Charlotte and the two Florida teams, a South Central with OKC, New Orleans, and the three Texas teams, and a Southwest with the two LA teams, Phoenix, Denver, Utah, and the new Vegas teams.

I have to expect that when the NBA goes from 30 to 32 teams that they will abandon the 6 division format and go back to 4 divisions or to 8 like the NFL did when they expanded to 32. Honestly the divisions really don't matter, just the conferences. As long as there are 2 16 team conferences all is good.

I wonder if it is time for a league in the US/North America to go to the soccer/football format of two levels. Have bottom team or two from the top level move down for the next season while the top team or two from the lower level moves up. I do not follow soccer/football but always thought that was an amazing idea. It keeps things even more competitive that way.

Too much money at play for teams to get demoted. I dont see it happening in the big 4 in the US.

As evidenced by all US sports history, leagues never make sense with their 'geographical' alignment. I wouldn't look for teams to move around to make the divisions look better on paper or make more sense.

Too much money at play for teams to get demoted. I dont see it happening in the big 4 in the US. It's never going to happen. And should it? Relegation and promotion sounds cool and exotic to us but as best I can tell, all it really does is widen the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Especially when you throw in the money and exposure created by the Champions League.

As the NBA is currently hosting its annual NBA Summer League here in Las Vegas (and some of the games have completely sold out UNLV's Thomas and Mack which is impressive,) NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the NBA has indeed been looking to expand for awhile but two things had to happen first:
1) the NBA needed to complete a new CBA with the NBA Players Association. That actually occurred earlier this year so now only 2) below has to happen.
2) The NBA needs to complete a new media deal after its current media deal expires after the 2024-2025 season. Silver said that they can reach a new media deal prior to that time as the NBA has an exclusive negotiation period with its current broadcast partners in the Spring of 2024.
I will be surprised if the new expansion teams are not Seattle and Las Vegas, but I will be thrilled if at least one of the cities gets a team. Silver yesterday did tell the Associated Press that Las Vegas is on the NBA's radar and he mentioned how the NBA "already has a huge footprint here" with the annual NBA Summer League and now the Finals of the upcoming new NBA in-season tournament.

Someone will have to move if they're putting two teams out West.
