I wanted to make a post about an important friend of mine who I am afraid is about to die as he is now in hospice with cancer. Several people here have also met him in the past so I thought it was something that I should mention on the board. I want to share some of my favorite memories of Alan and also keep it mostly wrestling-related as this is a wrestling game message board.
The person I was talking about in that other thread today is my friend Alan who is a major professional sports gambler here in Las Vegas and he was also the promoter of QPW. cman knows him too as he helped Cman get into some PWG shows that were otherwise sold out. At the CAC, I know TDalton has met him as he sat with us briefly and discussed hockey. I can't recall if Chad Olson met him too at the CAC or not but I know whlineup has also met Alan at a QPW show in 2019 at the FSW Arena.
I know I mentioned Alan before on one of the Filsinger Games virtual Q and A sessions about the Indy game as I talked about how he got cman into a sold out PWG show and how Cman got to enter first along with Alan and Shayna Baszler (when she went to PWG, Shayna always sat front row with Alan who once also brought Ronda Rousey to PWG. He also brought Marina Shafir to PWG and that is where Roderick Strong first met Marina.) Those were the days when PWG was selling out the Legion Hall in less than a minute and there were some times even I could not get a ticket. For those shows, I could usually talk to Super Dragon in advance and get my name on the list but there was one show (BOLA 2017 Night 2) where Super Dragon added me to Night 3 but said there were just too many people hitting him up for Night 2. But at the last minute, I got to go to Night 2 that year too thanks to Alan who came up with an extra ticket for me. It was an amazing show (the 6-man tag main event with the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega vs Lucha Bros and Flamita- check it out!) and I would have missed it if it was not for Alan.
Alan invited me to this home to watch my Seahawks defeat the Packers in the first game of the 2014 season when my new satellite dish would not get the NFL Channel or the local station that broadcast that Thursday night game (it was the first NFL game that season as the Seahawks had won the Super Bowl that January.) Afterward, Alan took me to dinner with his wife Gayle (who is with him now at hospice.)
Speaking of dinner, I went out to dinner here in Las Vegas alot with Alan. Sometimes we would be joined with some of my friends such as Ofi and Richard. The night before my birthday in June 2020, Alan bought me dinner at this great Italian place and a couple wearing Cubs gear walked over to say hi to him. You know who they were? The parents of then Chicago Cub (now Colorado Rockie) Kris Bryant.
Regarding the quoted comment I made about Filsinger Games buying the merch table from Alan, he only charged Filsinger Games $60 for a merch table at QPW because that is what Bart at AWS in California charged us for a merch table. Some promoters (like Josef Samuel at PCW or Joey Ryan at Bar Wrestling) wanted several $100s to do a merch table which made it impossible to do a merch table at those shows, but Alan gave Filsinger Games a fair rate.
I could go on and on talking bought Alan but maybe I should stop. Below are a couple of photos. One photo is the last photo I have with Alan at one of our dinners in Las Vegas (we were joined by a couple of mutual friends that night.) The other photo is a picture of Alan with Bruce Willis from the set of Play the Favorite which is the movie where Bruce Willis played Alan. The movie is OK but, as Alan said, the book is definitely better (I think you can find the book Play the Favorite at your library if you want to read about my friend.)
I need to be getting ready to leave for Chicago on Wednesday night, but I am just having a tough time as I am worried I am going to lose one of my best friends.
I'm worried there will be another post here soon as one of my best friends (Filsinger Games has bought the merch table from him in the past and Bruce Willis played him in a movie) just entered hospice on Friday due to cancer that came out of nowhere (he seemed fine at PWG in May but then got sick soon afterward.) He has spent his life beating the odds, but I'm worried I will never see him again. I normally drink non-alcoholic beer at home these days, but I went out drinking downtown last night and I am just having a hard time dealing with everything right now. Sometimes life just sucks.
