Card 08 Brantford Civic Centre, Brantford, ON - Maple Leaf Wrestling Taping – October 10, 2022

King Kong Bundy v. Virgil
Referee: Dick Woehrle
Both men were making their debut and the size of Bundy told the story. Virgil was able to get a brief offensive flurry midway through the match including a clothesline that put Bundy to the mat and a back suplex but Bundy came back and crushed Virgil with a big splash for the three count after about five minutes. Winner: Bundy *

NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch gives him thoughts to Gordon Solie at ringsidie about the level of competition in Ontario and expresses his confidence of keeping the title for a long time.

NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch v. Ron Hutchison
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Hutchison catches Gotch coming into the corner with a stiff clothesline but cannot capitalize and Gotch comes back and quickly puts Hutchinson away with an Iowa backdrop after just over a minute. Winner: Gotch. DUD

Stan Hansen speaks with Gordon Solie telling everyone the entire locker room is scared to get in the ring. Solie looks scared to death.
Stan Hansen v. Mikey Whipwreck
Referee: Joey Marella
Hansen storms the ring and thrashes Whipwreck as the fans roar in disapproval. A LARIAT turns Whipwreck inside out but somehow he gets a shoulder up at the last second. Hansen take the battle to the floor and Whipwreck goes punch for punch. Back to the floor again and Hansen grabs his bull rope and smashes Whipwreck with the cowbell. Marella makes the disqualification call after just three minutes. Whipwreck is busted open as Hansen tears up ringside and returns to the back. Winner: Whipwreck by disqualification *

Dutch Savage v. George South
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Savage gets control with wild punches and kicks and plants South with a RUNNING PILEDRIVER in less than a minute.
Winner: Savage DUD

Savage stops in with Gordon Solie and tells us he will coming to cities around the Province looking for a fight.

NWA International Champion Great Gama v. Nacho Barrera
Referee: James Beard
Gama controls this one from bell to bell and gets the win with a GAMA THROW in just under two minutes. Winner: Gama DUD

Long Riders accost Gordon Solie at ringside and earn some heat when they speak their minds about their goals in Maple Leaf Wrestling

American Males (Marcus Alexander Bagwell & Scotty Riggs) v. Long Riders (“Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin)
Referee: Joey Marella
The Irwins control against Bagwell early on but a key tag to Riggs turns the tables. A dropkick catches Scott Irwin in the chin for a near fall. The Males follow up with a DOUBLE DROPKICK for a two count and then Bagwell plants Irwin with a YELLOWJACKET SUPLEX for the three count after five minutes. Winners: Males * ½

Masked Superstar v. Ranger Ross
Referee: Dick Woehrle
Superstar took control with his size and power initially but then it was agility showcased with back to back to back flying cross chops that did some damage. The action spilled to the floor and Superstar choked out Ross with a television cord which was enough for Woehrle to call for the disqualification after 5 minutes of action. Winner: Ross by disqualification. *

Masked Superstar is interviewed by Gordon Solie and has nothing good to say about the officiating and tells Ross he will see him again on road.
Canadian Open Tag Team Champions “Playboy” Buddy Rose & Chris Candido are interviewed by Gordon Solie and Rose calls the pairing the greatest light heavyweight tag team in history.

Canadian Open Tag Team Champions “Playboy” Buddy Rose & Chris Candido v. “Sodbuster” Kenny Jay & Jake “Milkman” Milliman
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Jay has the fans roaring early when he controls the action. Rose counters a backdrop with a piledriver and then tags out to Candido who finished Milliman with a BLONDE BOMB after four minutes. Rose & Candido. DUD

Bob Roop v. Ken Shamrock
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Dollar has strict instructions for both competitors who start the action with a handshake. Roop and Shamrock go move for move, hold for hold. Roop with a suplex and stuns Shamrock but Shamrock comes back working the leg and body. Shamrock executes a power slam and then transitions to an ANKLE LOCK for the submission after seven minutes. Winner: Shamrock. **

Ken Shamrock speaks with Gordon Solie but is interrupted by the NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch when Shamrock claims he is best wrestler. Gotch shoves and a melee breaks out the requires security to break up.

Tiger Conway Sr. & Tiger Conway Jr. v. Mike Jackson & Keith Steinborn
Referee: Morgan Dollar:
Jackson gets cut off from the outset and the father and son duo go to work. Conway Jr. hits a FLYING HEAD BUTT for two and half count. Conway Sr. then follows up with a LET’S TWIST & HEAD BUTT for the win after four minutes. Winners: Conway Sr. & Conway Jr. DUD

“Macho Man” Randy Savage v. Johnny Rodz
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Savage is fired up and dominates this match with is speed. A series of vaulting neck snaps rocks Rodz and Savage then crushed him with a FLYING ELBOW SMASH after three minutes. Winner: Savage DUD

“Macho Man” Randy Savage is interviewed by Gordon Solie but is interrupted by Masked Superstar who challenges Savage to face him. Savage accepts and the match will take place as part of the upcoming event in London.

Brad Armstrong & Red Bastien v. The Fabulous Kangaroos (Al Costello & Roy Heffernan) w/”Wild” Red Berry
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Both sides were able to make tags to keep the momentum changing after Dollar issues strict instructions to both teams. Armstrong and Bastien double up for an arm wringer and chops on Heffernan. Armstrong scales the corner and hits a cross body deathjump but Heffernan rolls through and with a hook of the trunks gets the three count after seven minutes. Winners: Kangaroos *

Dark Match: NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch v. NWA International Champion Great Gama
Referee: Morgan Dollar, Vintage Charts
A handshake starts the action and both men settle in to what started as a defensive encounter. Gotch begins to press the attack including a series of Iowa backdrops and reverse nelson. Gotch works the upper and lower body on the mat and scores a couple of two counts. Gama is unable to use his size advantage while on the mat but eventually gets things back to a vertical base and uses a series of throws and suplexes to punish Gotch. A double leg and slam gets a two count. Gotch uses a thumb to the eye to stop the attack of his opponent which earns him some heat. Later, Gotch uses a series of punches to down Gama for a near fall which also has the fans up in arms. Gotch uses a reverse nelson to nearly force the submission late in the match before an Iowa backdrop finally puts Gama down for the three count after 37 minutes of action. Winner: Gotch. ****

Card 09 Memorial Auditorium, Kitchener - October 11, 2022

Last month in Kitchener, history was made when Frank Gotch began his reign as NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion with a victory over Jackie Fargo. The fans were looking forward to more history being possibly made tonight with two big title matches booked as the main events of the evening.

Red Bastien v. King Kong Bundy
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Bastien shows off his skills early including a rope climb headlock takeover but the size of Bundy is just too much. Bundy crushed Bastien with a tombstone piledriver and then an ATLANTIC CITY AVALANCHE. Bastien kicks out and the fans explode but Bundy hits his finisher a second time for the five count after about four minutes. Winner: Bundy *

Ranger Ross v. Virgil
Referee: Joey Marella
Ross has the control of this one from the opening bell using karate strikes and dropkicks to keep Virgil on the defensive. Ross works the upper body. Virgil kicks out after a neck breaker and later rolls to the floor to regroup. Ross comes out after his opponent and Virgil grabs a chair but Ross blocks it, takes the weapon and smashes Virgil with it. Marella calls for the disqualification after about seven minutes of action. Winner: Virgil by disqualification *

Tiger Conway Jr. & Tiger Conway Sr. v. Long Riders (“Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin)
Referee: James Beard
This was a tag team classic with both sides using quick tags and getting key defensive tags to keep the action going back and forth. The Conway family is able to focus on “Wild” Bill early on and Conway Sr. nearly wins the match with a QUADRUPLE HEAD BUTT but Scott Irwin makes the pin save. Conway Sr. found himself cut off from his son for a stretch and Scott Irwin hit his SUPERPLEX finisher but could get the three count even after Bill Irwin cut off the pin save. Tiger Conway Jr. is able to get back into the match and series of abdominal stretches slows down the Long Riders and Conway Sr. catches “Hog” Irwin with a QUADRUPLE HEAD BUTT for the three count after about 19 minutes of action. Winners: Conway Sr. & Conway Jr. ****

Brad Armstrong v. Masked Superstar
Referee: Dick Woehrle
Superstar takes over with a punch to the ribs followed by a flying cross chop. A Superstar Clothesline turns Armstrong inside out and gets the quick three count after only two minutes. Winner: Superstar DUD

Texas Death Match – Stan Hansen v. Mike Whipwreck
Referee: James Beard
Hansen starts off with a flurry including a back elbow and a series of boots but Whipwreck rebounds off the ropes and counters a clothesline with one of his own. Whipwreck gets to his feet first and then it a WHIPPER-SNAPPER. Hansen kicks out but Whipwreck hits another one for the upset victory after five minutes of action. Winner: Whipwreck * ½

Ken Shamrock v. Dutch Savage
Referee: Dick Woehrle
Shamrock is on fire at the bell and hits a suplex assortment followed by a blow off the top. A huracana sends Savage back to the mat. Shamrock grabs a limb for a rolling knee bar and gets the submission after four minutes. Winner: Shamrock DUD

AWA Women’s Champion Sherri Martel v. Candi Divine
Referee: James Beard; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
Lots of history between these two competitors and the action was intense from the outset. Martel countered and attacked with clotheslines and forearms. A wild brawl on the floor went to the Champion but Divine used her speed to recover and catch Martel with a clothesline. Divine struck with a CROSS BODY BLOCK but Martel kicked out at one. Divine then SUNSET FLIPPED Martel four consecutive times finally getting the three count (snake eyes) to win the title after about 11 minutes. Winner and new AWA Women’s Champion Candi Divine. ***

Canadian Open Tag Team Champions: Chris Candido & “Playboy” Buddy Rose v. The Fabulous Kangaroos (Al Costello & Roy Heffernan) w/”Wild” Red Berry
Referee: Dick Woehrle; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside
Both teams were able to get the members into the action early on but the Kangaroos used double teaming to get the upper hand including a catapult smash for Candido and a Kangaroo Leap for Rose. Heffernan catches Rose with a Kangaroo Kick and claims the gold after about five minutes of action. Winners and new Canadian Open Tag Team Champions Kangaroos. * ½

Very cool to see Candi Divine win gold, especially against her rival Sherri Martel. Also, that Gotch vs. Gama match in Brantford was awesome. Continued great action going on in Ontario.

Card 10 London Gardens, London, ON- October 12, 2022

Doctor X v. Ranger Ross
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Doctor X was making his debut and he wasted no time in going on the offensive with a backdrop and a full nelson. Ross struggled free but X unloaded with forearm smashes and covered Ross for the pin in less than two minutes. Winner: X DUD

Dutch Savage v. Virgil
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Savage controlled the action from the bell and tossed Virgil to the floor in the opening minute where he smashed Virgil with a chair and was disqualified. Winner: Virgil by disqualification DUD

Brad Armstrong v. Sputnik Monroe
Referee: Joey Marella
Armstrong gained the early upper hand and Monroe attempted to draw the fight to ringside but Armstrong would have none of it. A two handed bulldog gave Armstrong a two count and Monroe just kicked out after a RUSSIAN LEG SWEEP. Monroe finally found an opening and took over with knee lifts, chokes and slams. A running knee lift caught Armstrong flush and was enough to get the pin after seven minutes of action. Winner: Monroe ** ½

American Males (Marcus Alexander Bagwell & Scotty Riggs) v. Long Riders (“Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin)
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Both teams started out cautiously with multiple tags. “Hog” Irwin earned heat when he kicked Bagwell with a steel toe boot and the fans reaction seemed to spur on the Males who took over with their speed and quick tags. Bill and Scott Irwin made their share of tags to keep the action going back and forth late until Riggs was joined by Bagwell for a DOUBLE DROPKICK on “Wild” Bill for the three count after 17 minutes. The Riders were clearly frustrated after the match. Winner: Males ** ½

Falls Count Anywhere Match – Stan Hansen v. Mikey Whipwreck
Referee: Morgan Dollar
The story in this one was Hansen thrashing Whipwreck from the opening bell and the fans getting behind Whipwreck for a comeback that never materialized. Hansen showed no quarter and punished his opponent with slams, suplexs, backbreakers, punches, chops and elbows. The action never left the ring during the onslaught until the very end of the bout when Hansen smashed Whipwreck with a chair and score the win after 16 minutes. Winner: Hansen **

Tiger Conway Sr. & Tigers Conway Jr. v. Vachons (Mad Dog Vachon & Butcher Vachon)
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Both teams make tags early on in an effort to get the advantage. Mad Dog Vachon lands a double foot stomp to Conway Sr. for a two count. Tiger Conway Jr. is able to get into the action and controls against Butcher Vachon with his speed. The Vachons were not able to make a tag late and Conway Jr. caught Butcher Vachon with a dropkick to the chin and gets the three count after nine minutes. Winners: Conway Sr. and Conway Jr. * ½

“Macho Man” Randy Savage v. Masked Superstar
Referee: Morgan Dollar
Superstar uses his size to control the bout early and the action gets to the floor where Savage runs Superstar into the ringside table and is disqualified after only a minute. The fans are not pleased with yet another disqualification finish. Winner: Savage by disqualification. DUD

NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch v. Ken Shamrock
Referee: Dick Woehrle; Dr. Mike Lano at ringside; Vintage Charts
Gotch took the action to the mat almost immediately and worked Shamrock into a crossface and bar arm but a rope break kept the action going. Gotch earned some heat when he shoved his challenger to the floor. Woehrle scolded Gotch but allowed the action to continue. Gotch also caught Shamrock with a wild swing during a tussle in the corner and the fans were not pleased. Shamrock was able to finally counter back and caught Gotch with a series of kicks and a flying hip attack for a near fall. A huracanrana stunned the champion and allowed Shamrock to move to his ANKLE LOCK finisher. Gotch was able to escape but Shamrock went back to the hold a second time and claimed the title after about 16 minutes. Winner and new NWA Canadian Heavyweight Champion Ken Shamrock. *** ½

Congrats to Ken Shamrock on beating Frank Gotch for the NWA Canadian Heavyweight title. I loved the finish as I could imagine the huracanrana catching Gotch off guard setting up the win for Shamrock. Very cool that you used the vintage charts as well. Overall fun show.
