LEGENDARY CHAMPIONS’ CLUB – How it all began
Scott needed a break!
Between Strong Style USA closing down, COVID, the drama with his now friends Brute, Massacre, Vengeance, and Thrash, and nearly losing his wife Tina and his niece Jamie, Scott had just decided to shut down for awhile. With his blessing, Tina and Jamie went on a week’s vacation so Scott could have some alone time to recharge and debate over his next move.
After what he had been through with Brute, Massacre, Vengeance, and then Thrash, he discovered that deep at heart, they were all decent people, even if they liked to fight a little too much sometimes. Scott chalked it up to their upbringing. As a token of gratitude for their help in saving his wife and niece from the Overmaster, Scott helped Brute, Massacre, and Vengeance finance their business venture, Gladiators Gym, where “no schmucks and schulbs were allowed”. Despite that, the Gladiators actually seemed to enjoy helping regular people be better versions of themselves through physical fitness. Brute was the nutrition expert and head trainer, Massacre and Vengeance helped train and run classes, and Thrash worked nearly exclusively with the ladies with the help of Jamie. Scott, of course, worked out there regularly and offered advice and help when asked.
But it was time for him to make his next move. Wrestling had been good to him, and as he laid in his easy chair one lazy day, a phone call would provide him with all the incentive he would need.
“Hello, Is this Scott?” a distinguished male voice asked
“Yes, who is this”
“Scott, my name is Nick Bockwinkel” Scott was a fan of Nick and nearly geeked out, but he had to make sure.
“OK, what are you doing calling a cretinous humanoid like me?”
The voice on the other end laughed “I actually envision you more as an obsequious psychofan, and I understand you love coffee as much as I do”
“Oh wow, it is you. What compels you to call me today?”
“Well, I’d be happy to explain but first you have to open your front door. But be advised, I brought a few friends and they like coffee too…………..hello”
Scott ran to his front door and opened it, and sure enough there stood Nick Bockwinkel, wearing a smile and carrying a cup of coffee.
“Well hello, no Bobby Heenan?”
“I’m afraid Sir Robert Of Heenan is not a fan of this project, but these gentlemen are”
Nick indicated several gentlemen behind him who were all as familiar with Scott as he was with them. Scott was a fan first and foremost and a promoter second. First he met Harley Race, who was polite but a little suspicious of the situation, being the “warhorse” of the group according to Nick. Next there was MISTER Bob Backlund, who was loud but in a good way. Buddy Rogers followed Bob, he seemed pleasant enough. Following him was Lou Thesz, one of the greatest technical wrestlers ever. Last but not least was Bruno Sammartino, one of the most beloved champions of all time. They all had coffee in honor of Scott, and they were followed by a chef and a food truck.
“What’s this about?” Scott asked the group
“Well, we’d planned on being here awhile so we thought you might get hungry. We have a lot to talk about. Is it OK if Chef uses your kitchen?” Harley asked.
“Uh, sure, go ahead”
Scott and the champions retired to Scott’s downstairs man cave for this impromptu meeting.
“So, you got any beer here?” Harley growled
“Now Mr. Race” Bob Backlund began “This is a business meeting. We can’t have beer at a meeting”
“They never let me have any fun” Harley grinned to Scott, who smiled as everyone laughed. About this time, the chef came in with a delicious breakfast. As everyone filled plates and began to eat, Nick spoke.
“So it’s like this, Scott. The reason we are here is we have a business proposition in mind, but no real idea how to move it forward. We are all willing to invest $250,000 apiece in this venture, but we need someone with the right skillset to move this idea forward, and we all agreed we should talk to you about it”
“OK, so what’s the idea?” Scott asked
Buddy Rogers began “It’s an idea I came up with. You see, we all get together once or twice a month to visit, reminisce, shoot the bull, that kind of thing. One night we came up with our own version of a wrestling reality show, so to speak. It combines elements of Hell’s Kitchen and Survivor with professional wrestling.”
“I’m confident that’s never been done before, tell me more” Scott leaned forward in interest
“The six of us are a panel, so to speak” Bruno Sammartino spoke up “We will put ten wrestlers up against each other over a four week period. Men and women. At the end of that period, the highest ranked wrestler gets to challenge for the title. But here’s where it gets interesting, the bottom four are up for elimination, and will have to wrestle each other, or one of us, in order to keep their spot on the roster. Once we are set up we’ll choose a panel of six women as well”
“I like this idea and actually think it could work. Let me work on some of my contacts in the field and I’ll get back to you. In the meantime let’s enjoy this amazing breakfast”
Scott and the champions toasted over coffee and breakfast and tossed ideas around………
While outside, something else was going on………..
“Boss, you ain’t gonna believe this……”
