Dman I wished I lived in Las Vegas during the 1980s. Chad Olson, Cory Olson, what do you guys think of this? 40 years ago this month, the AWA ran their first of many shows at the Showboat in Las Vegas. The Showboat would become one of the main venues for the AWA during the 1980s as the site for many of the AWA tapings on ESPN. This was the lineup from January 12, 1983: Baron Von Raschke vs AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bokcwinkel Hulk Hogan vs Jesse Ventura Rick Martel and Steve O vs Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan Al-Kassie Wahoo McDaniel vs Jacques Goulet Buck Zumhofe vs Bobby Heenan

Rick Martel, of course the show would be awesome! That is a fun looking card, thank you for sharing, Vegas!

The Showboat was the site for numerous network boxing shows back then, including on ESPN. So it would have seemed an attractive venue for a promotion looking to appeal to a national audience. No disrespect to the St. Paul Civic Center. 😉

There was some great wrestling there back in the day for sure. The key is being to put up with the odor of Bengay and old people farts. I remember watching some of those shows on ESPN back in the day and it looked like they raided an old folk's home or a bingo hall. Many elderly people in the audience. But to be fair, that might have been a few years further than this show so who knows.

Thanks for sharing, Zeke! I didn't realize that they were running the Showboat already in '83. That's a fun-looking card there.

Yeah, I remember what a big deal they always made about Herbie Mills being ringside for the matches. Supposedly the audience mainly comprised flotsam and jetsam from the casinos with nothing better to do for a couple hours rather than avid wrestling fans. That accounted for the relatively tepid crowd response to the mat action.

Many good shows in Vegas. AWA was in it's prime time in the 80's. Fun time!
