How do you go about deciding on the matches for your first card?

The first few shows are always the wild west. A bad first champion kills a lot of new feds so pick your two favorite guys and have them battle over the vacant belt. Same with tag teams. I wouldn't worry about rankings until you have a few shows under your belt. Give the people you want to push easy opponents on your first few shows to establish them as your top guys.

Pick a title, fill it. That's how I do it anyways.

I like to start in media res. I come up with a looming big show, feuds to be blown off at it, and then work backwards from there to some matches to build to those blow off matches.

Here's a video I did on different ways to crown your first champion. Might give you an idea or two.

I usually have say an 8 man tournament with the winners advances etc either randomly draw the matches or pick the matches yourself . Maybe make matches No Dq matches hold say Texas Death or Steel Cage . Any heels get beat in tournament, you could start a feud? 1/4 Final matches Card 1 , next week card (2) hold semifinals and 3rd card have the final.
or have a battle royal to crown my first champion .
Then do the say for tag team division and women division (If you are having one)

However you decide to start your fed, when it comes time to either run your title tournament or have a bout to fill the vacant title, just make sure you have an idea what you want to do, no matter who wins. The plans could be different for each guy, but have at least a general idea of what you want to do. Otherwise you will feel like you are shotgun booking too much and it will get tiresome instead of fun.

Nothing worse than running a tournament for a belt and having one of your filler guys win it.

I guess the question is what does your roster look like. I are using the entire Legend's roster or a select number.
I have restarted numerous times in the past and I always have picked my roster first and then set out my first card. I usually let the dice decide on the roster which creates some interesting match ups to explore.
Depending on the roster, you can run a tournament. I have always been a fan of what TNA did back in the day where the four competitors would compete in a tag team match, the loser of the fall is eliminated leaving you with a three way. The loser of that fall is eliminated and that leaves you a one on one battle for the belt. I usually make the final fall a ladder match for some extra drama. You can run that as a main event and then use the undercard to build up future matches.

Is it weekly shows that build to big show each month or is the big show every 2 months etc. And of course, the roster you are using matters. Not everyone can be in the main event picture at all times. How you cycle guys in and out, is it rankings based or just feel, etc. Those kind of things are important to have an idea about, even if they wind up changing.
