I plan to be there but I need to make some extra money through Summer School. I am signed up to teach Summer School and I even have students enrolled in my class.
The only unexpected hurdle was I just got through the mail assigned jury duty during part of Summer School. During the regular school year, we still get paid our salary for the days we have jury duty but we don't during Summer School (it is the same as taking days off during Summer School, we can take them but we are not paid during those days.)
But there is a good chance I won't have to serve as I have received 5 or 6 of these in the past and never once been on a jury as cases often get settled beforehand. And the one time I thought I might be on a jury, one of the lawyers used one of their challenges to dismiss me during jury selection due to my small amount of law enforcement training (Criminal Justice was my original major for a couple of terms in college and I was actually the first juror excused that day through a challenge) as that is a topic that comes up during the voir dire process.
I would not mind being on a jury, but I don't want it to be during Summer School as that is the only time during the year when it hurts me financially to do jury duty.
If I do have to serve on a jury and it if it s a long term jury (it could be with a Tuesday start date as the shorter 1 day cases tend to have Friday start days and the projected longer cases tend to have earlier in the week like Monday or Tuesday start dates here in Clark County,) I will have to assess my financial situation to determine if I can make it to GCon or not. I am already teaching 1 less class next year (6 classes vs the 7 I taught this year) due to 2 new teachers being hired in my department so I will be making less money next year and that is also a consideration.
If I don't have to do jury duty during Summer School, my attendance should be considered almost automatic (minus something tragic happening.) I might still be able to go anyway, I should know more for sure by mid-June. I am going to try to be there for my 9th straight year.

I'm hoping to make the trip, trying to decide if I'm going to fly in or make the long drive.

Hopefully you don't end up having to do jury duty especially considering it would affect your financial situation. That's strange that you've received that many summons over the years. I know they draw names at random for jury duty but what are the odds that your name would get picked that many times? Is that common in the United States? I've had family members receive summons up here in Canada but thankfully have never received one myself (knock on wood). I nearly had to testify as a witness in two separate criminal trials though but both of the defendants decided to plead guilty a few minutes before the trials started. Anyways, hopefully you're able to make it to Galacticon and thank you for all your hard work as a teacher. Your profession is one of the most criminally underappreciated in the world.

But if you are like me and are summoned but did not have to actually serve then you go right back into the pool for possible juror summons until you actually serve. I am home sick today due to a diagnosed nasty respiratory illness (but at least the test results for both COVID and for strep throat came back negative.) While home today, I called the court and got my jury duty deferred to August once I explained how I am willing to do jury duty but not in June as it negatively impacts my earning potential (which is not much to begin with lol.)

As the Magic 8 Ball says, outlook does not look good. It will be another year I will have to miss. Really thought I was going to make it last year but ended up working 7 days a week still when July came around. Likely will still be working 6 days a week this July. At this point 3 days off in a row would feel like heaven lol.
