I'm a LOW/Indies player looking to start playing some COTG and have my eyes set on the current Future Shock sets as it's fairly new and seems like a good jump off point where I can get caught up more easily (compared to GWF). My question is, since I have no clue who these characters are, is it advisable that I play aCe first before diving into Future Shock since a lot of the characters showed up there first? I keep reading about you guys getting surprised when some Centra characters "return" in FS, which I'm sure won't happen to me because I have no clue who the hell they are to begin with.

You can always use the COTGWiki for those wrestlers. Mike however has usually changed them up from their original stories regardless.

Future Shock is an alternate universe to the aCe. So you don't need to play aCe first. The characters in Future Shock are different versions of the same characters.

While "knowing" the characters is a cool reveal for fans of aCe and the GWF, I try to put my own spin on them so that even if you are new to the game you should be able to play without missing too much. Kris did a great job with aCe, but those sets are not "necessary" to pick up Future Shock 2115-2118.
