Well, in their defense it is a pretty bad film. The premise is poorly executed, almost all the jokes fall flat and some of the "jokes" do cross the line into the offensive stereotype category. However, I didn't feel like the film was EXCRUCIATINGLY bad as they made it out to be and I've seen substantially worse films than North. I usually reserve my scathing reviews for movies that waste the audience's time by not presenting any type of plot, storyline or character development; The Florida Project starring Willem Dafoe is a good recent example of that. Funny story about how I originally saw North. When I started following Roger Ebert's reviews back in high school I had heard about his legendary takedown of the film however I couldn't find it anywhere to rent as none of the video stores in my area had it in stock. One day I was meeting a friend for lunch a few towns over and I was a bit early so I went to the Mom & Pop video store next door to kill some time. Lo and behold in the $3 bargain bin was a copy of North on VHS and I just had to buy it to see how bad it truly was. I remember I also bought a copy of Searching For Bobby Fischer from the bin too which is a fantastic film that I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it. Hi I started watching S&E when they were still on PBS! Listening to them argue about movies was always fun! One of my favorite movies is TRON, and I thought they would both not like it or understand it, but they both LOVED it: So yeah, I was always a S&E fan! Todd C WTIC It was surprising sometimes the movies that they liked. The one that blew me away was their Two Thumbs Up for Beavis & Butthead Do America. The video is linked below. They start talking about the film at around the 5:00 mark. m.youtube.com/watch?v=kODJspOzxQM

Re: North - I'm sure the fact that it was directed by Rob Reiner, who was on an unbelievable 10-year directing hot streak (This Is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, A Few Good Men though IIRC there was some disagreement between them over that movie, among others) didn't help. At the time expectations were high for a Rob Reiner picture that weren't there if this were a Pauly Shore project. He found his way again with The American President right after this, but my recollection is that he's fallen off as a director ever since.

Well put together. Reminds me about how I miss Gene all these years later.
