Nowadays winning the Royal Rumble would be more important but put try to put yourself back in 1988 not knowing if there will be another Royal Rumble

At the time I would say winning the Wrestlemania 4 battle royal as in 1988 winning a battle royal at Wrestlemania (the previous one had been won by Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 2) was a major deal as it was prior to the first Summerslam and prior to the Royal Rumble becoming an established PPV.
But overall I don't think winning either was critically important as both of those matches mostly featured (at the time) midcard talent.
In terms of historical significance though the first Royal Rumble was definitely the most important as it led to arguably the WWE's 2nd-biggest PPV which is still going strong 35 years later.

Depends on what you consider the first Royal Rumble. The PPV or the original house show one?

Depends on what you consider the first Royal Rumble. The PPV or the original house show one? That's the one we're talking about, the one on tv. At the time it would have to be the Mania battle royal being more important. You didn't know the Rumble would become an established ppv.

Then for me it is the Rumble. It was basically the main event of the special. WM IV's Battle Royal was the opening match.
