My 9/11 story is a bit unique. I was living in Arlington, VA at the time and our apartment overlooked all of DC and you could see the Pentagon from our balcony as well. I had a West Coast client so I usually went in later than everyone else. When I woke up and turned on the morning radio they were talking about the towers in NY. Then I jumped in the shower and by the time I got out the talk was about the Pentagon. I looked outside and saw the smoke. I didnt hear the crash because I was in the shower I guess. Then there was talk of another plane going to DC and from my vantage point I could see everything and was waiting to see if another plane was coming in. Very freaky. One of my roommates worked for AOL news and called back home to verify the Pentagon thing was real, because there was so much misinformation going on. At that point I decided I was just taking the day off (which I did get charged PTO for BTW).
The rest of the day was sitting home watching TV and watching the circling of blackhawk helicopters outside, while the rest of my roommates came home early to join me. I had just started dating my wife a few weeks prior and she was able to get through before phone lines completely shut down for a while. She had to walk home from the National Gallery of Art where she worked, as the Metro was closed. About the only funny thing that happened that day was that my friend who lived in Alexandria and worked in DC and usually drove past the Pentagon was rerouted through my neighborhood and randomly knocked on my door when I should have been at work. He was listening to Phish in his car and had no idea why the roads were closed until I told him.

On 9/11, I was still in college. I groggily woke up and went over to my computer to check a forum I frequented, and saw the thread "NY Peeps Check In." I got curious, read a smidgen of the thread, and realized something was up. I turned on the news, and it didn't seem real. I watched the news most of the day, and counted my blessings that the few people I knew from that area were safe and sound.
