I did not check the ALW Facebook before going to the show tonight so I missed that Deonna and Renee were not going to be there due to injuries. Between Deonna not being there and Krampus being a no show I was a bit disappointed. Leva Bates ended up taking on some former NXT wrestler that I am not familiar with. The peace princess or groovy queen or something like that. All I know is Leva pulled an Eddie Guerrero by bringing her cane into the ring, tossing it to her opponent as the referee was distracted and then fell onto the mat to make it look like she got hit. The referee bought it and DQ'd the other woman so Leva is the #1 challenger to the Women's title. The show was ok but not as fun as the first one I went to.
That's too bad about the injuries, especially when it's someone you're looking forward to seeing. I still remember a damn-near riot almost occurring at an event here in Vancouver during the Attitude Era when it was announced that Stone Cold Steve Austin wouldn't be appearing due to injury. Sounds like you made the best out of the situation as you could.
Interesting that the referee fell for the Eddie Guerrero trick. One thing that must be very frustrating about being a wrestling referee is how frequently stupid you're made to look. From a kayfabe perspective you'd think that refs would have eventually clued in to the fact that the only reason Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart, Mr.Fuji etc. were jumping up onto the ring apron was to distract them so that their wrestler could cheat.
I still remember as a kid, back when I thought wrestling was real, sitting front row at a local Indie Show with my Dad when a manager jumped up onto the apron on the side of the ring we were sitting. I started screaming at the referee to turn around to see the cheating going on behind his back. Of course he didn't see it, the heel won and I asked my Dad why the referee didn't listen to me. After the show my Dad had to have "the talk" with me about how wrestling was all a work.
Of course at least wrestling referees can excuse their stupidity by saying it's all in the script unlike other sports referees who frequently need no help looking foolish.
