Cleaning the game shelf this week, and I came across an old Jeff Jarrett Vs. Buff Bagwell starter deck from Wizards of the Coasts WCW Nitro trading card game, released 23 years ago(!). I worked for Hasbro when this came out and remember us pushing it hard. It had the misfortune of being released after WWE's Raw Deal from Comic Images, so it felt like a bad copy, though Nitro's design had actually come first and been pitched to WWE, who passed on it and then had their card licensee at the time Comic Images reverse engineer their own game based on the pitch. Or at least that's the version we were told. Besides the licenses moving in opposite directions at the time of release, what I really think killed Nitro was the lack of wrestler theme decks. If you wanted to build a deck for a specific WCW wrestler (other than Bagwell and Jarrett who were in the starter) you had to buy a bunch of boosters as hope you got the cards for him. And the wrestler cards themselves were the super rare cards. So you could buy boxes of boosters hoping to get Goldberg and end up only able to build a Disco Inferno deck. Anyone else play this one back in the day?
