Former college track star, 23, dies just months after celebrating master's degree Former Cal Poly track and field star Shelby Daniele suddenly died on Wednesday at the age of 23 - just months after receiving her master's degree at the university. Daniele, who broke Cal Poly's indoor 200m record last year with a time of 24.69 seconds, competed for the Mustangs for five years between 2020 and 2024. During her time at California Polytechnic State University, the talented sprinter earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 2023, before going on to secure a master's in June.

Raymond Francis Newman, a former Major League Baseball pitcher known for his time with the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers, passed away at 78 Born on June 20, 1945, in Evansville, Indiana, Ray made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 1971 and later played for the Brewers from 1972 to 1973. Ray was a left-handed pitcher who saw limited action in his brief career, often serving as a reliever. Dwight Gerard Walker, a former NFL player known for his time with the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints, passed away at the age of 65. Born on January 10, 1959, Walker’s football career began to shine during his tenure with the Browns from 1982 to 1984, where he played as a running back. His promising career was unfortunately cut short due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Despite the challenges, Walker’s resilience saw him return to the field in 1987 with the New Orleans Saints, where he played as a wide receiver before retiring at the end of the season. Dwight Walker will be remembered not only for his contributions on the field but also for his determination and spirit off it. Mr. Walker played in 38 NFL contests over his career.

John Baumgartner, a former infielder for the Detroit Tigers, passed away at the age of 93. This was reported on the baseball passings page by Jack Morris. If you are into baseball, I highly suggest you follow this page. The following is an excerpt from Baumgartner's online obituary: John was an incredible athlete in football as well as baseball. He still holds the record at Legion Field for the longest goal to goal punt but baseball was his passion! He began his career in the minor leagues and made it to the "Big Show" playing 3rd base for the Detroit Tigers. He retired from baseball to a business career where he carried on his athletic prowess on the golf course. Before 1950 season he was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent. He made it to the Majors in 1953 where he played 7 games for the Tigers and had 27 at bats in the show.

On September 23, 1956, Virgil made his debut with the New York Giants and became the first native of the Dominican Republic to play in the Major Leagues. Ozzie Virgil Sr. was 92. “He means a lot,” Juan Soto said in 2023. “He was the first Dominican coming to the big leagues and opened the doors for … not only Dominicans, for all Latin players.” Virgil, a Marine Corps veteran, played nine Major League seasons. He then spent more than two decades as a Major League coach, including with the 1984 NL champion San Diego Padres.

Clive Everton, one of snooker's greatest ever commentators and voice of the sport, has died at the age of 87. Everton devoted his life to snooker and covered some of the sport's most historic moments as a broadcaster and journalist.
