Footy world in shock as Newtown Jets club legend dies while celebrating his team's grand final win The man who saved the most iconic footy team in Australia from oblivion has died just hours after the side completed one of its most memorable grand final victories. Barry Vining, 85, suffered a heart attack and could not be revived after watching the Newtown Jets secure a last-gasp 28-22 grand final win over the North Sydney Bears in the NSW Cup decider on Sunday. He had served as club president for 32 years during the most tumultuous years of the Jets history and had been watching the final at home when tragedy struck.

I remember Dikembe Mutombo first when he played for Georgetown alongside Alonzo Mourning.
In the NBA, Dikembe Mutombo broke my heart when he led the Nuggets over my Sonics in the First Round of the 1994 NBA Playoffs which was the first time a #8 seed defeated a #1 seed (it has happened multiple times since) as I belive if the Sonics had gottne past the Nuggets (one of th only teams they had a .500 record against that year) then they would have had a great chance to go all the way that year (I remember their next/Quarter-Finals opponent would have been the Jazz who they did very well against that year.)
Nevertheless, Mutombo was one of my favorite NBA players with the way he waved his finger after blocked shots. RIP.

I remember seeing Pete Rose at an autograpgh signing with Ric Flair at Caesar's Palace back in 2009.
Pete Rose made a mistake betting on baseball but now that he has passed I hope he does finally make it to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown albeit with some notation about the controversey as the Hall of Fame is also a museum.

I always thought he should be in there. Yes, bring attention to what he did via the betting, but his stats made him HOF eligible. If he threw games that would be a whole different thing. IMO the HOF is not fully legit without him in it. Especially with some of the low lifes that are in there and the possibility of people who used performance enhancing drugs. RIP

Been a crazy 48 hours with this stuff. Mutombo’s College years are the stuff of legend here in the DC/MD/VA area. It was rare you didn’t hear one of his sayings at a party in the 90s and 2000s.
