Red Bastien made an impressive comeback to beat Playboy Buddy Rose at 1:01. Rose jumped Bastien on the way to the ring and rammed into the ring post before the bell. A bloodied Bastien managed to kick out after an INSIDE BACKBREAKER. Rose went to the top for a cross body block deathjump but Bastien rolled through for the three count (Snake Eyes!).
The Destroyer picked up a one sided victory over Gorgeous George w/Cherie Dupré in 1:37. George manage to upset ringside with his prolonged “preparing” in the ring but once referee Dick Woehrle managed to get George in the ring, this one belonged to Destroyer from bell to bell and ended with a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK when Dupré could not cause a distraction.
In a match for the vacant LOWF Tag Team Championship, Road Warriors w/Paul Ellering defeated Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff by disqualification. Referee Morgan Dollar had strict instructions for both teams before the bell and the fans had immediate concerns for a non-finish. Animal and Hawk managed to take out Volkoff with a DOOMSDAY DEVICE early in the match but Shiek made the save. Animal went hard into the ring post and was busted open at the hands of Sheik. Later, Sheik used his loaded boot to punish both Hawk & Animal. Warriors used double teaming to get back into the match which ended up on the floor where Sheik smashed Hawk with a Tag Team Title belt after 4:54. Sheik and Volkoff beat down the Warriors and their manager until security arrives. Ox Baker took a beating from The Sandman but came away with the disqualification victory when Sandman used a SINGAPORE CANE shot after 1:21. Baker and Sandman started brawling at the bell. Sandman took control and hit three WHITE RUSSIAN LEG SWEEPS but could not get the three count before Joey Marella made the disqualification call. Both men brawled after the bell. Jimmy Snuka & Bobo Brazil won over Greg Valentine & Johnny Valentine by disqualification when Johnny Valetine refused to stop brawling on the floor against Snuka at 3:36. Both sides had momentum in control after Morgan Dollar gave strict instructions before the bell. The intensity continued to build until the action spilled to the floor and Valentine took things too far and disregard the warning of the official. After the bell, Brazil and Snuka clear the ring and send the Valentines to the back.
Great Gama made an incredible comeback to defeated Buddy Rogers [Vintage Charts] after 5:59. Rogers had complete control of the match and twice appeared to have the match won with a FIGURE FOUR GRAPEVINE. Gama managed to reach the ropes both times to keep the action going. Rogers continued to attack with piledrivers, knees, dropkicks and punches. The fans began to inspire Gama to get something going and he used a gut wrench throw and double leg and slam to get back into the action. Rogers used his quickness to foil a lot of his opponent’s offense but Gama was able to catch him with a rolling front chancery and then ended it with a GAMA THROW with what appeared to be a quick three count from Dick Woehrle which the Nature Boy protested afterwards.
In a match for the vacant LOWF Heavyweight Title, Frank Gotch downed Harley Race after 2:36. Gotch does not look like he was going to last long after Morgan Dollar called for the bell with Race dominating with his size and power. Twice, Gotch kicked out after a PILEDRIVER from Race before being able to finally slow his opponent’s attack with a countering mat attack. The GOTCH TOE HOLD did not get the submission but a reverse nelson did damage. It was back and forth with both men having opportunities to claim the title until Race mounted the corner but Gotch was able to counter the dive into a roll up for a huge near fall. Gotch then immediately transitioned to a reverse nelson for the win.
History is made in North Attleboro with Frank Gotch claiming the Heavyweight Title in a classic against Harley Race. The championship committee was quick to congratulate Gotch on his victory but then turned their attention to the Tag Team Titles announcing the championship remains vacant and there will be a rematch between the Road Warriors and Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff on the next card to determine the first champions.
Up next, we head to Hubbard, OH for action from the Junior High School featuring the rematch for the World Tag Team Championship between The Road Warriors and the team of Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff. The Destroyer could find no way to overcome the size of King Kong Bundy w/Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and took the disqualification loss after 2:05. Bundy was just too strong for Destroyer to maintain any consistent attack and his frustration boiled over when the action spilled to the floor and Destroyer bounced Bundy’s head off the ring side table directly in view of referee Dick Woehrle. In an absolute thriller, Red Bastien came back to defeat Ted DiBiase w/Virgil after 4:37. DiBiase humiliated a young fan before the bell and then built on the momentum to dominate the early action. DiBiase worked the back with suplexes, slams and backbreakers but could only get two counts. A clothesline flipped Bastien to the floor and DiBiase followed. Bastien reversed a whip and sent DiBiase shoulder first into the ring post. Bastien had his opening and made the most of it exploding with an attack leading to an ATOMIC DROP. Virgil was able to cause a distraction and the action continued. It was back and forth from that point. Bastien made the ropes to escape a COBRA CLUTCH. Later, Virgil interfered in the match to save DiBiase from being pinned after a flying body press. Bastien had the momentum however and used another ATOMIC DROP to get the three count. The Valiant Brothers w/Captain Lou Albano survived an absolute war with Greg Valentine & Johnny Valentine after 4:07. With two rule breaking teams in the ring and Morgan Dollar in charge of the action no one really knew what to expect. The action started before the bell with the Valentines jumping their opponents. From their, it was pure brutality. “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant ate the ring post and was wearing a crimson mask early. At one point, the Valiant Brothers cut off Johnny Valentine but even back to back to back SPINNING NECKBREAKERS from “Luscious” Johnny Valiant could not get the victory. A pin save by Greg Valentine lead to a wild brawl. Greg Valentine used a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK on Jimmy Valiant but could not get the submission. The finish came when Jimmy Valiant was able to superplex Greg Valentine off the top of the corner and then blast him with a foreign object for the win.
Ox Baker pinned The Sandman in a match where referee Morgan Dollar really wanted to see a conclusive finish. Baker decided to use a near hold early to an effort to slow Sandman’s attack and it actually worked for while. Before long, they were brawling on the floor. Sandman went into the post and was busted open. Sandman could not get Baker in a position to go for the win however before Baker brawled back into control and dropped Sandman with a HEART PUNCH. Sandman survive but was not really in the match from that point and fell to a second HEART PUNCH after 2:15. After 3:35 of intense brawling, Bobo Brazil defeated Killer Kowalski with a COCO BUTT. Both men wasted no time and tearing into each other under the watch of Joey Marella. Brazil scored early with a COCO BUTT that Kowalski was able to shake off. Kowalski and Brazil battled back and forth. Kowalski scaled the corner but was slammed to the mat by Brazil. Brazil followed up with a COCO BUTT that nearly ended it. This would happen twice more during the match as Brazil foiled the attempts off the buckles by his opponent including the finish of the match with Brazil slamming Kowalski from the top of the buckles and immediately hitting his finisher for the win. Nick Bockwinkel w/Bobby “The Brain” Heenan picked up a very impressive victory over Great Gama after 1:01. Heenan and Bockwinkel had something to say to referee Morgan Dollar before the bell and the official appeared intimidated. Gama was never really able to get anything going against Bockwinkel who quickly downed Gama with a BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER. Gama never really recovered as Bockwinkel came off the top twice smashing onto his opponent and then locked in a second BOCKWINKEL SLEEPER for the win.
In a match for the vacant Tag Team Titles, Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff defeated Road Warriors w/Paul Ellering by disqualification after 1:49. With Jame Beard in charge of the action, the fans were expecting a conclusive finish. The Warriors were able to control against Volkoff but Sheik used a series of suplexes against Animal to come back. The action went outside and Animal battering rammed Sheik into the ring post. It was too much for even James Beard who called for the disqualification over the protests on the fans at ringside.
The controversy surrounding the Tag Team Titles continued tonight with once again a non finish between the teams of the Road Warriors and Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff despite James Beard being in charge of the action. The Championship Committee has decided that things will be settle between the two sides at Card 05 at the Witschi's Sports Arena in a No Holds Barred Match. Up next, we have action from the Armory in Lewiston, ME with Heavyweight Champion Frank Gotch joining forces with Great Gama to take on number one contender Nick Bockwinkel and his partner King Kong Bundy in a tag team main event!
