GenCon 2024 was the 35th convention. 2087 came out in either late 1986 or early 1987, meaning that the game is about 38 years old. If not for the years that Tom produced two sets a year, the GWF would only be on the year 2125 or 2126.

...and if CotG had ended in 2112, none of us would be here on this Board right now! Todd C WTIC

It would have been 2109 not 2112 really but sure. Over 50 sets plus numerous spin-offs. Who would have believed that would happen from a simple 24 card pack with some crazy art and 1970s moves on said cards.

Funny thing is the time between when Tom thought about ending the GWF in 1999 to now is twice as long as the time the game was around back in 1999.

Oh wow the GWF almost ended? That's crazy, that was one of the hottest times in my fed, I would have been crushed if it all ended.

Tom explained it in his first book. He had a choice to make and the GWF could have ended but in the end, the game was his choice.

Tom explained it in his first book. He had a choice to make and the GWF could have ended but in the end, the game was his choice. I'm not familiar with that story, what was the deal behind that? It's been 25 years, but as I remember it, "The End" was written when Tom was getting a chance at a promotion at JCC, which would have meant longer hours and more work (and more money) which would have ended FG. He was already struggling with game/work/life balance as it was (at the GCon where he first told this story, he mentioned studying prospective Mandrill stats literally while proctoring an exam for his class), and thought about ending the game and the fed, before deciding against taking the promotion. At this point I'd hope that if Tom steps aside and doesn't have a successor in mind, that he leaves it "up to you, promoter" with the GWF continuing in open-ended fashion, a bit like the "Let's go exploring!" final strip of Calvin & Hobbes, instead of folding the GWF in-universe. But this was the late '90s and Tom was incorporating real-life drama into wrestling storylines just as was happening in the WWF and WCW (he specifically cited the Flair-Bischoff feud).
