TV Show: Superstar Showdown
In Ring: Jim Ross is with Ric Flair to open this first episode of Superstar Showdown. Ross says that this will be a jam-packed show and it will be highlighted by a match between two of the all-time greats in Lou Thesz and the man to his right Ric Flair. Flair says how pleased he is to be here and that while he agrees that Thesz is one of the best to ever lace up the boots he isn't Ric Flair and he says he'll prove that tonight.
-No DQ / No Count out-
1) The Fantastics (Tommy Rogers & Bobby Fulton) beat The British Bulldogs (Dynamite Kid & Davey Boy Smith) (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) when Fulton pinned Smith with a Cross Body Block in 12:09. **
SWF Commissioner Teddy Long came out before the match started and announced the special stipulation much to the delight of the crowd and the protests of Albano. The Bulldogs were more aggressive in this match and did not care much for the rule book. It was a fast-paced bout and the finish saw all four men battling in the ring. As the ref tried to restore some order Fulton caught Smith with a surprise Cross Body off the top rope and scored a three count.
Backstage: Lance Russell is with Mike Rotunda. Rotunda is hyping his match next week with Ron Garvin. Rotunda mentions that he's a world class collegiate wrestler and that he shouldn't have any trouble with a brawler like Garvin. Russell mentions that Garvin is a guy who can beat you up and beat you in many different ways. Rotunda simply brushes him off.
2) "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff (w/James J. Dillon) beat Nikita Koloff with a Reverse into the Turnbuckle and feet on the ropes in 6:55. **
Orndorff used his smarts and the distraction of Dillon to get the tainted win against the power of Koloff. Orndorff reversed a turnbuckle whip and quickly cradled the Russian Nightmare and put his feet on the ropes unbeknownst to ref Joey Marella who made the three count.
Highlights:
Video package of Rob Van Dam !!
3) Rob Van Dam defeated Chris Candido with Rolling Thunder in 3:45. *
A dominant display for Van Dam as used his superior athletic and aerial ability to put away the wily Candido for an impressive win.
4) Pride and Glory ("Hacksaw" Duggan & Don Kernodle) defeated The Skyscrapers (Sid Vicious & Danny Spivey) when Duggan pinned Vicious after a Flying Spear in 11:25. ****
A bit of an upset as the patriotic tandem upended the huge duo of Sid and Spivey. All four men were in the ring and Spivey tossed Kernodle over the top rope but the Carolina native held on to the ropes and quickly went to the top rope. The ref escorted Spivey to his corner and Kernodle hit a flying clothesline on Vicious that staggered him and Duggan finished him off with his Flying Spear for the win.
-Texas Death Match-
5) Stan Hansen defeated The Great Malenko with a Lariat in 8:35. **
Hansen busted open his Russian opponent and used three consecutive Lariats to gain a decisive three count.
-TV Main Event-
6) Lou Thesz beat "Nature Boy" Ric Flair with a Thesz Press in 18:48. ***
During the even contest Harley Race made his way down to ringside but appeared to just be watching the action. Flair was slightly distracted since he had the upper hand and motioned for Race to go back to the dressing room. He then whipped Thesz off the ropes and he reversed it into his flying press for the win. After the match Race rolled into the ring and started to attack Thesz. Flair soon joined in, and they delivered a spike pile driver to Thesz injuring his neck. Medical personnel attended to Thesz as security came out to restore order.
