Something I have been kicking around in my brain for a while. Some match previews for your enjoyment.
As always, predictions are always welcome.
I hope to have the results completed by next weekend.
World Title round-robin tournament to decide the undisputed Champion of the World - Nick Bockwinkel v. Lou Thesz v. Bruno Sammartino
There have been many title-unification matches in the past, but they have ended in draws or disqualifications. Now, at Night of Dreams, three competitors, each representing a major North American wrestling company, will wrestle in a round robin to a definite finish. No draws! The competitor with two victories in the tournament will be crowned the Undisputed World Champion! The tournament will feature Nick Bockwinkel, who, in addition to holding regional titles throughout North America, held the World Title of a Minnesota based national company four times in the 1970s and 1980s. Also competing will be Bruno Samartino who had record setting reigns as World Champion for one of the largest promotions in North America from 1963 to 1977. The final competitor will be Lou Thesz, who set out to unify all the existing World Titles in 1949 and in 1952 became the closest to every being called the undisputed world heavyweight champion. He would hold a national version of the World Title six times before losing the tile for the final time in 1964. Thesz has to be considered a favourite to win the tournament but with the New York Fans behind Sammartino and Bobby “the Brain” Heenan in the corner of Bockwinkel, any one of the competitors could leave Madison Square Garden with the gold.
USA v. Russia – US Express v. Ivan Koloff & Nikita Koloff Two of the best tag teams of the early 1980s will face each other in battle of ideologist and styles. The American popular due of Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo will have youth and speed on their side while Ivan Koloff has the brutality and experience that makes him one of the foremost intellects in wrestling while his nephew Nikita Koloff possess power and intensity that few in wrestling have. Head for cover, this one could be an all-out war!
Undisputed Tag Team Championship – Road Warriors v. Fabulous Kangaroos Since Greg Oliver’s The Pro Wresting Hall Fame: The Tag Teams was published in 2005, the debate over the greatest tag team of all time has been hotly contested. Oliver’s work put The Fabulous Kangaroos at the top of the list with the Road Warriors a close second. Coming together in 1957, Al Costello & Roy Heffernan, the Kangaroos, are often credited with popularizing tag team wresting in the late 1950s and 1960s gradually making their way across Canada and the United States setting records and winning gold everywhere they competed. Nearly 20 years later, Hawk and Animal, took the wrestling world by storm with an incredible power attack crushing every team that stood in their path and capturing tag team gold in each of the major North American promotions of the time and causing a sensation during their tours of Japan. Now both teams will have the opportunity to prove who is the best of all time at Night of Dreams. “Wild” Red Berry will manage the Kangaroos and Paul Ellering will be in the corner of the Legion of Doom.
Scientific Spectacular – Danny Hodge v. William Muldoon Making his pro-debut in 1959, Danny Hodge and travelled the country as the perennial World Junior Heavyweight Champion displaying the mat skills that lead him to an undefeated collegiate record winning back to back to back NCAA championships. He was generally considered the best pound for pound competitor of his time. Decades earlier, “The Solid Man” was the reigning World Greco-Roman Champion taking on challengers from around the world. Both competitors were gifted scientific competitors and will clash is what will be a mat classic as part of the Night of Dreams
Rematch a century in the making – Two out of three falls - George Hackenschmidt v. Frank Gotch Wrestling lore is full of classic encounters but none quite as controversial or fascinating as the two bouts between the “Russian Lion” and Frank Gotch just after the turn of the 20th century. At the time of their two previous encounters, Hackenschmidt and Gotch were two of the biggest stars in wrestling. Their first encounter lasted over two hours. Their second encounter was surrounded in controversy as Hackenscmidt was injured while training just days before the match. Whether the injury occurred at the instruction of Gotch’s camp or whether it was just Hackenschdmit’s already surgically repaired knee finally giving away will likely never be known. What is known is that Hackenschmidt was in no condition to complete in September of 1911 and their encounter fell short of expectations. Now, at Night of Dreams, both competitors will be at the top of their form and the world can finally experience the “Rematch of the Century” was it was meant to be.
Gaijin Tag Team Extravaganza – Miracle Violence Connection v. Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen Individually, Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody where extremely feared wrestlers in Japan but when they teamed up, mayhem and chaos was a guarantee. Hansen and Brody where tag team champions in Japan and also won a prestigious round robin tag team tournament in 1983. It was in that same year that Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy would make his first tour of Japan. Steve Williams would not venture to Japan until 1986 but by 1990, “Dr. Death” was teaming regularly with Gordy as the Micale Violence Connection where they would dominate winning tag team gold both in Japan and in North America. Now, two of the most dominate and feared tag teams in Puroresu history will clash in a strong style classic. Clash of the Masked Men – The Destroyer v. The Spoiler The Destroyer first appeared on the West Coast of North America in the early 1960s becoming an immediate top attraction and capturing the major championship of the territory. But it was in Japan that Destroyer became a legend making his first tour in 1963 and appearing regularly until the early 1980s. He was the first masked wrestler to compete in Japan and regularly and remained an attraction long after his retirement. The Spoiler emerged in the Texas territory in 1967 and became one of the top masked competitors in the southern Untied States. He travelled across almost all of the North American territories collecting plenty of titles along the way in singles and tag team action until the early 1980s. Now we will get to see two of the top masked competitors of their generation go one on one at Night of Dreams to determine who is the World’s Greatest Masked Man!
Women’s Tag Team Elimination Match - Team Moolah v. Team Stratus Multi-member tag team elimination matches were brought to attention of the global audience in the fall of 1987 thanks to a Pay-Per-View event from one the major promotions of the time. On that historic night, two teams of five women battled as part of the undercard, one captained by Sherri Martel and the other by the Fabulous Moolah. Now Fabulous Moolah will once again captain a team of five women competitors at Night of Dreams. Moolah has carefully selected competitors she was closely associated out throughout her historic run as the undisputed Women’s Champion. Moolah’s team will include her trainee and championship tag team partner Toni Rose, the always tough Beverley Shade, and trainees Judy Martin & Leilani Kai, aka The Glamour Girls, who held the Women’s Tag Team Titles in two of the major federations in North America and toured Japan as well. Across the ring from this formable team will be a team captained by Trish Stratus, a multiple team Women’s Champion of the biggest wrestling company in North America. Joining her are Jacqueline, who held the same title as the Stratus on two occasions along with multiple regional titles, second generation competitor and former women’s champion Rockin Robin, former two time holder of the same Title won by Stratus, Nora Greenwald, and fan favourite Candi Divine, who held the Women’s World Title of a Minnesota-based major wrestling organization multiple times. Steel Cage Match – Andre the Giant v. Abdullah The Butcher A special reinforced steel cage will be constructed to hold in the two competitors as Andre the Giant, one of the most beloved fan favourites in history, meets Abdullah The Butcher, one of the most bloodthirsty maniacs of his time. Despite both travelling the globe during their respective careers, they were rarely opponents. Andre has promised fans that he will make sure Abdullah the Butcher is put out of wrestling for good.

Hope this was your inspiration for this event, matches sound awesome! I did something similar when I got the Backlund card but used Race instead of Thesz. Now that we have Bruno, may replay, LOL.

That poster hung on my wall for years. It is rough shape now but it still one of my favourite possessions. It inspired plenty of fantasy booking.

Oh yeah I may still have it and the only Special I ever purchased as the Dream Card was an awesome idea. I also liked that Tito Santana article as well as it described how his schedule matches Hogan’s.
