2087...the set that started a phenomenon! You had 24 of the best wrestlers going. After the breaking of the Galaxian Code at the tail end of 2086, we finally had definitive good vs. evil. We have 12 heroes and 12 villains.
Federation Defense Fighters- (1) Star Warrior, (2)Omega, (3) Commander Sam, and (4) Massif. Before there was Bloodline, there was his father and grandfather, the legendary Star Warrior and Omega. Star Warrior was the top hero in the fed and his father was the co-founder of the GWF, not in his best wrestling days, though. Commander Sam was a tough, no-nonsense fighter, who had a great feud with Comrade Terror. Before being a referee or Commissioner, Massif was a superstar, who if not for being a teammate of Star Warrior, would've been the top star on his team.
Greek Gods- In a relatively weak tag division in 2087, (5)Actagon and (6)Proteus, along with the Gladiators were the cream of the crop.
Wolf- His career may be over after 2124, but this was the beginning of the awesome career of (7)Wolf, who started his career with many feuds, more than any other character in 2087. He was a former teammate of the Gladiators, so naturally, he feuded with Brute and Massacre, while also having a good feud with Thantos and Executioner.
The Flying Titans- One of my favorite characters, (8)Lord Nexus, had two teammates in (9)Pit-Viper and (10)Pulsar. Nexus was the ultimate team player his entire career, but was actually one of my best singles stars. Before being Dragonmaster or Pulsar Prime, they were Pit-Viper and Pulsar, two of the GWF's undercard wrestlers.
The Space Croppers- The final two heroes are (11)Beast Rider, quite possibly the worst wrestler in the set and his tag partner, (12)Renegade. This was a very sub-par duo, who generally was carried by Renegade.
The evil gamemaster, Thantos- Before there was Encubus, there was his legendary father, the awesome (13)Thantos, who was the best wrestler going in 2087, and had an awesome feud with Star Warrior.
The Cosmic Terrorist, Comrade Terror- Before being Transevolved into Dreadnaught and eventually dying in the ring, long before Zombie Dreadnaught, (14)Comrade Terror was very much alive. He was Thantos' right hand man, the man Thantos sent to do his dirty work and believe me, he did it well. He had a great Earth vs. Cygnus battle with Commander Sam.
The Medieval Headsman, Executioner- Upon Thantos' request, Marcel De Sade donned a mask and became the evil (15)Executioner, another one of Thantos' henchmen. He was the original Masked Assassin.
Evil Ones- This was the royalty of the GWF, (16)Exo-King, (17)Killer Queen, and (18)Death Knight, a tough three-man team. King and Queen had robotic implants that allowed them to be enhanced in the ring and they were a tough duo in 2087.
Vanity- In 2086, he was teammates with Renegade and Beast Rider, but was convinced to turn on his fellow Neptunians by Killer Queen, and what you got was one of greatest characters of this set. (19)Vanity was not a good wrestler, at all. But, along with Queen, he made for excitement on the undercard vs. the Space Croppers, always full of antics.
The Gladiators of Aethra- (20)Brute and (21)Massacre were the most dominant tag force in the GWF, busting heads and taking titles, they were extremely tough on the Greeks and Wolf as well. Before the Aethran Overmaster, they were the masters of Aethra.
The Society of Death- This was the perfect name for this trio of (22)Invincible Krakan, (23)Ghengis Khan, and (24)Mutant. They gave the Flying Titans a fit! This was an incredible that saw many attacks and many hospital beds for the Titans! It also marked the beginning of the legendary Krakan vs. Nexus feud.
Well we've seen all the characters, now here is the best and worst of the bunch to me.
Best Wrestler: Thantos. He was great vs. Star Warrior and flat-out dominated Wolf. He was a great World Champion. His top three competitors for this title were the previous two mentioned and the Invincible Krakan.
Worst Wrestler: Vanity. He was an incredibly fun character, but terrible in the ring. Beast Rider, Death Knight, and Pulsar were also up for this award.
Best Feud: The Society of Death vs. The Flying Titans. There were great feuds, but this one saw it all! Great action, attacks, and top-notch storylines.
Worst Feud: Omega vs. Death Knight. Omega, the co-founder of the GWF got reduced to this feud? How sad is that? This was a pathetic feud that saw all of their matches take a while as neither could put the other out of his misery!
Best Tag Team: The Gladiators, hands down. In a weak tag division, the Glads dominated. Here were my tag teams: Defenders(Massif/Omega), Old Glory(Commander Sam/Massif), the Greeks, the Space Croppers, the Flying Titans(Lord Nexus/Pit-Viper), the Henchmen(Comrade Terror/Executioner), the Royal Family(Exo-King/Killer Queen), Flamboyance(Vanity/Killer Queen), Gladiators, The Hero Slayers(Invincible Krakan/Ghengis Khan), and Manglers(Ghengis Khan/Mutant)
Worst Tag Team: The Space Croppers, they had Beast Rider stinking up the joint!
Best Finisher: FALLING FACE SLAM. This was the trademark move of the Invincible Krakan. He leans opponent against turnbuckle, pushes off and slams his knee against the back of the opponent's head, and opponent's face hits the mat.
Worst Finisher: WHIRLWIND. This was Pulsar's finishing move, a dizzying airplane spin. This is not a tough move at all, even in the 80's, when 2087 was written. This is probably why the start of Pulsar's career was more like an airplane crash than a spin!
My Favorite Wrestler of 2087: Star Warrior. Call me corny, but I like heroes, and he was the first true dominant hero.
My Least Favorite Wrestler of 2087: Death Knight. This was the most boring character in the set. He didn't fit in on any team, but definitely not with the Exo-King and Killer Queen.
Best Storyline- I love the Earth vs. Cygnus feud in the Galactic Wars of 2058 and how they are carried over in the GWF with Sam vs. Terror, one of the classic feuds of all-time.
Worst Storyline- Comrade Terror hates Earth so bad that he teams with Executioner, from France,Earth? I don't know why Tom teamed him up with an Earthling, but it was fun teaming them up. They actually won my tag belts in 2088 and lost in their first defense and blamee each other and eventually split up in a violent way with Terror showing his hatred of Earth. I think that in 2087, this is just another example of the French being weak in war, teaming with the enemy!
Best Card Art- Thantos. His card looks awesome! I love the definition of the scar and the skull looks great. He wrestles like Ric Flair, but is much scarier looking.
Worst Drawing- I love each drawing, but I do feel that two are weaker than the rest. Brute and Massacre. Brute's head looks much smaller than his body to me, reminds me of those old baseball cards that had the small head and huge body! As for Massacre, what's up with the Hitler mustache? And why does 10 of the 24 wrestlers have capes? Star Warrior, Proteus, Beast Rider, Pit Viper, Pulsar, Thantos, Massacre, Vanity, Killer Queen, and Death Knight are all wearing capes. As Hurricane Helms would say, "What's up with dat?"
Possible Card mistakes- Omega does Cosmic wardance-3 twice and Massif does a head butt-3 twice. I understand Massif's. With a head that huge, I'd use it too. Thantos also doesn't throw anyone out of the ring. I find that interesting that the biggest villain in the set doesn't throw anyone out and try to take advantage out of the ring. It also makes it hard for him to win my Rigel Royal Rumble or any Battle Royal's.
I thoroughly loved 2087, the beginning of greatness. Let me know what you thought of 2087 and stay tuned for the Best and Worst of 2088.
