Just two spot shows left before the start of WrestleCade VIII weekend, first up is an offering from the NWC...
LOW Northern Wrestling Corporation - New Haven Coliseum - New Haven, CT (Card #795)
1) Samoan Island Tribe defeated Virgil & Johnny Rodz:
Taking a break from their war with The Sheepherders it was the Samoan Island Tribe (Alofa & Samu) facing the ASW duo of “Wrestling Superstar” Virgil & “The Unpredictable” Johnny Rodz. The SIT found themselves on the defensive early as Virgil and Rodz did a good job working together. That included Virgil laying both men out with the piledriver. Samu got the SIT back into it and set up Rodz for the finish with a jumping headbutt off of the middle rope. A tag to Alofa saw him execute the Samoan Drop on Rodz to score the pin as Samu fended off Virgil.
2) One Man Gang defeated Chief Omega:
Manager Captain Lou Albano proudly led his new charge the One Man Gang into battle with the popular Chief Omega of ASW. Albano was crowing at ringside about the massive size of OMG who checks in at 6’9” and 495-pounds. Omega did a nice job early ratting OMG with a knee lift but it wasn’t enough to take the big man down. OMG struck back with a powerful headbutt and then knocked Omega out with a Big Right Hand to score the pin making a successful debut in the NWC.
3) Drake Younger defeated Afa, Jr.:
The often underrated Afa, Jr., “The Samoan Storm”, one-third of the Samoan Island Tribe, was in action against the “Psycho Shooter” Drake Younger. Afa, Jr. did a nice job controlling the action including nailing Younger with the leaping splash in corner, second rope moonsault, and the Samoan Drop. Younger bailed out of the ring and got the upper hand on Afa, Jr. striking him with a light tube out of view of the referee. The hardcore Younger then took it back inside and twice nailed Afa, Jr. with the Exploder Suplex before Executing Drake’s Landing to score the pin.
4) Tony Atlas vs. Greg Valentine was a Draw:
The popular “Mr. USA” Tony Atlas took on Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, who was accompanied by his manager Captain Lou Albano. Atlas has been struggling since his NWC debut but the fans have rallied behind the native of Roanoke, VA. He was on the defensive for a good stretch early as Valentine hit the falling elbow hammer and neckbreaker for a series of near falls. Atlas battled back and went on a nice offensive spurt connecting with the big dropkick and jumping headbutt for some near falls of his own. Both men were looking to unleash their finishing moves, the Press Slam and Splash for Atlas and the Figure Four Leglock for Valentine, but were unable to. With seconds remaining it was Atlas connecting with a running lariat (ch) and going for the pin but Albano broke up the count with a distraction. That led to the bell sounding and ending the hard fought match in a time limit draw.
5) Jerry Lynn defeated Arik Cannon:
It was a shocking turn of events on the last NWC card at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #785) that saw Jerry Lynn and the “Anarchist” Arik Cannon end their long time partnership. Cannon blamed Lynn for their loss to the Heartbreak Express and attacked him following the match. It ended a good run for the team that included them challenging the Road Warriors for the LOW World tag team titles at WrestleCade VII in Queens, NY (Card #700). Cannon got the better of Lynn most of the way in this one including delivering the Exploder suplex, Saito suplex, and the brainbuster. A brief offensive by Lynn saw him hit the Cradle Piledriver for a big near fall. Cannon recovered and went for a fallaway slam but Lynn countered out with a German suplex and then hit a second Cradle Piledriver to score the pin. It was a nice bit of revenge for Lynn and a bitter defeat for Cannon who will no doubt be looking to get one back on his former tag team partner.
6) Apter’s Corner with Bobo Brazil:
PWI Editor Bill Apter welcomed the popular Bobo Brazil, a two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, as his special guest. Brazil thanked Apter for the time and produced a contract that he said was an open contract for a match at WrestleCade VIII. He then called out Killer Kowalski and his manager Captain Lou Albano daring them to accept his challenge. Both Kowalski and Albano made their way to the ring after some hesitation. As Albano paced frantically back and forth, Kowalski took the mic from Apter and accused the PWI Editor of “doctoring up” the rankings in the magazine to favor guys like Brazil. The discussion got heated before Kowalski nailed Brazil with a sucker punch that knocked Apter down as well. He and Albano then left the ring as an angry Brazil recovered. He grabbed the mic and said that if Kowalski “has the guts” he will sign the contract. Kowalski balked at that but then Brazil tossed the pen at him angering both him and Albano. Kowalski then reached in and grabbed the contract from Brazil and signed it against the wishes of Albano. A happy Brazil, having helped Apter back up to his feet, said that Kowalski had forgotten to read the fine print and that their match at WrestleCade VIII would be a Dog Collar Match! The crowd erupted in cheers as Kowalski and Albano protested at ringside. Brazil waved the contract at Kowalski who made a bid to get back into the ring but he was pulled away by Albano and LOW officials.
7) Cowboy Bob Orton & The Warlord defeated Jimmy Snuka & Diamond Dallas Page:
This was a grudge tag team match signed after recent events at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #785) where The Warlord and Cowboy Bob Orton got the better of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka in a post-match attack until Diamond Dallas Page made the save. Captain Lou Albano, the manager of The Warlord, was not at ringside for the match. Snuka and DDP dominated most of the early action. DDP caught the massive Warlord with the Diamond Cutter for what looked to be a sure pin but he managed to get his foot over the bottom rope to break up the pin. The Warlord struck back using the backbreaker on both opponents. Snuka looked great during his time in but it would be the “Superfly” going down in the end. With The Warlord cutting off DDP, Orton caught Snuka up top and executed the Superplex to score the pin. The crowd jeered the decision but it was some nice revenge for Orton who was beaten by Snuka in their match at MSG.
8) Fred Blassie defeated Frank Gotch:
The main event was a battle of former LOW World Heavyweight champions as Humboldt, IA, native Frank Gotch took on the “King of Men” Fred Blassie. The two previously met for the world heavyweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #752) with Gotch using a Guillotine Choke for a submission win to retain the title. Gotch used his great technical skill to control the pace early including trapping Blassie in a crossface and armbar. Blassie countered a waistlock takeover and pummeled Gotch with multiple knee drops before biting him. The “Vampire” tendencies certainly came out there and Gotch had a hard time dealing with that kind of attack. He struck back with a wicked forearm uppercut rocking Blassie for a momentary burst of offense. Blassie recovered quickly, though, and after another attack of multiple knee drops he trapped Gotch in the Stomach Claw. Gotch tried to fight out of it but was unable to get to the ropes and Blassie gripped the hold on tighter to get the submission victory snake eyes style. It was a huge win for Blassie who will be part of a Four Way Elimination Match of former world champions with Gotch, Magnum T.A., and Ted Dibiase at WrestleCade VIII (Card #800 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA).
