Thanks for the comments Pariah, Crimson and Daytondave. That ROH card was so much fun to roll out that it gave me second thoughts about phasing out ROH. However I am moving forward with plans for the IWA which will feature some elements of ROH, CHIKARA and Evolve so I'm pretty happy with it. Next up is LOW All-Star Wrestling!
LOW All-Star Wrestling (Episode 47) - WMC-TV5 Studios - Memphis, TN (Card #881)
Announcers Lance Russell & Dave Brown opened the broadcast with huge news regarding the LOW World tag team titles narrating footage of the Midnight Express (“Loverboy” Dennis Condrey, “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton, & “Ravishing” Randy Rose) becoming four-time champions beating Sabu & Rob Van Dam in Greenville, SC (Card #875). A brief videotaped interview followed with manager Jim Cornette in full on celebration mode saying that the Midnight Express made “Mama Cornette” proud and that he was going to buy some new pink covers for his tennis racquet. Russell seemed amused by the interview but added not to take Cornette or his team lightly as they could be in for a long run as champions. Brown agreed and said that competition will be fierce as it always is in the tag team division of LOW. With that it was Russell bringing out LOW Commissioner Charlie Cox who was in studio to make some major announcements.
LR: “Welcome back to LOW All-Star Wrestling, Commissioner Cox, it is a pleasure to have you join us today.”
CC: “Thanks Lance, you and Dave are the top announcing team in the business and LOW is proud to have you both on board as we move forward with some great events taking place including WrestleCade IX weekend in Las Vegas, NV.”
LR: “I understand that you do have major announcements regarding both the LOW World Heavyweight title and the LOW World tag team titles not to mention some big news regarding the pending arrival of the IWA (Independent Wrestling Association).”
CC: “That I do, Lance, and I will begin with the LOW World tag team titles. As you know the tag team titles have always been a big part of WrestleCade events but this year we are trying something different in conjunction with our good friends and partners at Kings Road United in Japan. We have arranged to hold a sixteen-team single elimination tournament on the next KRU tour, subtitled Road to Tag Team Gold, with the winning team challenging for the LOW World tag team titles at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan (Card #901). The three show tournament for the title shot takes place in Tokyo, Japan (Card #892), Kobe, Japan (Card #893) and concludes in Osaka, Japan (Card #894). The following are the first round pairings with the seedings for each team:
â—Ź The Sheepherders (#8, NWC) vs. Midnight Rockers (#9, AWE)
â—Ź John & Chris Tolos (#7, AWE) vs. Valiant Brothers (#10, AWE)
â—Ź Giant Baba & The Destroyer (#6, KRU) vs. Masked Superstar & Big John Studd (#11, KRU)
â—Ź New Age Outlaws (#5, GWA) vs. Stars & Stripes (#12, NWC)
â—Ź Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon (#4, AWE) vs. Love Brothers (#13, PCW)
â—Ź Steve Williams & Terry Gordy (#3, KRU) vs. Mr. Fuji & Mr. Saito, #14, KRU)
â—Ź Fabulous Kangaroos (#2, GWA) vs. Nikolai Volkoff & Iron Sheik (#15, NWC)
â—Ź Road Warriors (#1, Freelance) vs. The Mongols (#16, KRU)
LR: “That is an amazing lineup of talent and I can’t wait to see who will challenge the Midnight Express for the LOW World tag team titles at the Tokyo Dome.”
CC: “I should make note, Lance, that the Midnight Express have an upcoming title defense against the Fabulous Kangaroos in the GWA (Card #882 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico) and should the Kangaroos win the belts the Express will replace them in the tournament. I also want to note that the former champions, Sabu and Rob Van Dam, opted not to enter the tournament and I have been told that they have amicably ended their partnership.”
LR: “Wow that is already some huge news Commissioner Cox but I understand we have even more.”
CC: “Yes indeed we do and as you know upcoming is the annual 12-Man Gold Star Battle Royal at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #885) where the winner will challenge for the LOW World Heavyweight title at WrestleCade IX in Las Vegas, NV (Card #900). Lou Thesz is looking forward to defending the belt at the big event but first he will have to survive a challenge from former champion “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers on an SWA card in Tampa, FL (Card #884). I was deeply involved in negotiations with Rogers and his manager J.J. Dillon regarding a spot in the Battle Royal and Rogers, who is presently the ranked number-one contender, opted to go for the title shot in Tampa. That left a spot open in the Battle Royal which has now been filled and here are the twelve men competing for the opportunity to challenge for the LOW World Heavyweight title at WrestleCade IX:
â—Ź George Hackenschmidt (GWA, two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, one-time LOW International Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź Antonio Inoki (KRU, two-time LOW International Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź The Sheik (NWC, one-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, four-time LOW International Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź Bobo Brazil (NWC, two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, one-time LOW International Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź Harley Race (KRU, two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, three-time LOW International Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź Johnny Valentine (SWA, one-time LOW World Heavyweight, International and LOW World tag team champion)
â—Ź Nick Bockwinkel (GWA, two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, three-time LOW World tag team champion)
â—Ź Frank Gotch (NWC, two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion, one-time LOW World tag team champion)
â—Ź Fred Blassie (NWC, two-time LOW World Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź Dan Severn (AWE, one-time LOW World Heavyweight and LOW International Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź William Muldoon (AWE, one-time LOW World Heavyweight champion)
â—Ź Rick Rude (AWE, two-time LOW International Heavyweight champion)
LR: “That is some amazing talent assembled there and that will be one whale of a Battle Royal, I can’t wait for that. Commissioner may I ask you to join us at the announce table for the next round of major announcements.”
CC: “It would be my pleasure, Lance. I am looking forward to the upcoming action.”
DB: “Ok, while Lance and Commissioner Cox get ready for the opening contest I want to tell you about the action coming up today highlighted by a qualifying match in the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament with “Rowdy” Roddy Piper taking on The Grappler. Those two have had quite a rivalry in Pacific Coast Wrestling and now we will witness it right here on LOW All-Star Wrestling. Also scheduled for action is NWC star “Ace” Cowboy Bob Orton, the tag team combination of Kevin Sullivan & “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert representing the House of Humperdink out of the SWA plus AWE star Dan “The Beast” Severn. We also have Paul London back this week and we will see if his suspension gets lifted by the aforementioned Commissioner Cox. First up, however, we have tag team competition featuring four men that have officially been signed to IWA contracts and without further ado let’s throw it over to ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta.”
1) Ricochet & Rich Swann defeated Joey Ryan & Manimal by DQ:
Four new names signed to IWA contracts competed in special tag team action as Ricochet & Rich Swann, both coming from Evolve, took on the unique pairing of Joey Ryan & Manimal coming out of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood. Cox noted that with assistance from ROH promoter Cary Silkin, Gabe Sapolsky of Evolve and Bryce Remsburg of CHIKARA they are beginning to assemble a solid roster for the IWA. In addition to the names appearing in this match it was stated that others currently signed to IWA deals are Diamond Dallas Page, Bryan Danielson and “The Machine” Brian Cage. Ryan, who seemed disgusted to be teaming with Manimal, had a strong showing in this bout including trapping Ricochet in the bodylock Kimura. The unorthodox Manimal blew it for his team, though, when he was disqualified for hitting Ricochet with the large bone he carries to the ring. It was a disappointing finish but the studio audience enjoyed the action presented by the IWA stars.
Following the match Cox revealed that there was another man who was helping to sign talent for the IWA and after a meeting of the Board of Directors of LOW it was decided to name him the first IWA Commissioner. His name – David Marquez, a veteran of pro wrestling who has been the frontman for Championship Wrestling from Hollywood. Cox said that Marquez is the perfect man for the job and that he along with Silkin, Sapolsky and Remsburg will bring the IWA to great heights in the new year. Before going to commercial break there was more news from Cox who said that the upcoming CHIKARA and ROH Final Battle events will also feature open invitational Lucky 13 Battle Royals with the respective winners getting guaranteed IWA contracts.
2) Cowboy Bob Orton defeated Ricky Landell:
The capable Ricky Landell out of St. Paul, MN, had the tough task of facing veteran star “Ace” Cowboy Bob Orton of the NWC. Orton is preparing to face Blackjack Mulligan in the qualifying round of the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament and it could have been easy for him to overlook Landell. Instead it was a focused Orton who survived an early offensive from Landell and planted him with a Piledriver to score the pin. Brown made an interesting observation that the piledriver may be a bit more effective against Mulligan than the Superplex, Orton’s trademark move, as taking Mulligan off of the top rope could be a difficult task.
Interview – Paul London:
LOW Commissioner Charlie Cox returned to ringside to join Lance Russell for what was expected to be a tense situation. A videotape package aired of GWA star Paul London, a two-time LOW Junior Heavyweight champion, regarding his suspension for slapping Russell following a tough loss to Bryan Danielson. The piece also featured the reluctant apology that London issued to Russell two weeks later. London had threatened to sue Cox, Russell, ASW, and LOW if his suspension wasn’t lifted and the apology was deemed necessary in order to get to this point. London entered the studio to jeers from the crowd showing just how much his popularity has dwindled because of his actions over the past few weeks. It didn’t seem to bother him, though, as he mugged for the camera and demanded to know what Cox was going to do about his suspension. Cox said that London had served his time and that he was going to lift the suspension. That elicited a joyous reaction from London who vowed to become a three-time LOW Junior Heavyweight champion and said that he would win the belt at WrestleCade IX. Cox said if he wanted a title shot on the biggest stage in LOW he would have to earn it and that he would be put in a top contenders match on the next edition of LOW All-Star Wrestling (Card #891). London said he didn’t care who he had to beat and that Johnny Saint, the reigning champion, would be “easy pickings” for him in Las Vegas. Russell intervened and asked him if he even wanted to know who his opponent would be and again London said he didn’t care. Cox then revealed that the man who will face London next week on ASW is a man that he is very familiar with – Brian Kendrick of Pacific Coast Wrestling! The studio audience cheered that announcement but London was irate saying that he “carried that bum” for years and that he doesn’t deserve an opportunity for a title shot at WrestleCade IX. Cox answered back that London himself is lucky to have that opportunity based on his recent actions and that it will be him against Kendrick to determine the LOW Junior Heavyweight title challenger at WrestleCade IX.
3) Kevin Sullivan & Eddie Gilbert defeated Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill:
The popular pairing of Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill had a tough assignment going against House of Humperdink members Kevin Sullivan & “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert. The SWA duo were joined by their manager Sir Oliver Humperdink who wielded a kendo stick at ringside. Doring and Roadkill put up a strong fight in the bout which included Doring scoring a two count on Gilbert with the Danaconda. Roadkill used his weight to his advantage delivering the big splash to both Sullivan and Gilbert during the match. It wasn’t enough, though, as Humperdink rallied his troops and Sullivan went to the use of a foreign object, looking to be a chain, to punish the opposition. Gilbert took advantage of the situation and nailed Doring with the Hot Shot to score a snake eyes pin. Humperdink was thrilled with the win by his men and celebrated by hitting Doring with a kendo stick shot to the back afterward.
4) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: Roddy Piper defeated The Grappler to advance:
The tension was thick for this one as “Rowdy” Roddy Piper took on The Grappler in the continuation of a great rivalry in Pacific Coast Wrestling. This time, however, there was a lot on the line as the winner would advance to the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament. The Grappler has notably scored some key wins over Piper using his controversial Loaded Boot so he was looking to continue that success here. Piper was equally determined to gain some revenge and he did just that in the end. After a flurry of action it was Piper, behind the back of the referee, digging into his tights for a Foreign Object which he nailed The Grappler with to score the pin. Replays of the finish showed that it was a pair of brass knuckles that Piper used to get the win. That meant that Piper will go to the opening round of the tournament and take on Freelance star Bruiser Brody in what promises to be an explosive open to WrestleCade IX weekend in Las Vegas.
5) Dan Severn defeated Matt Striker:
AWE star Dan “The Beast” Severn looked impressive as he took on Matt Striker in this bout. Striker had some bursts of offense but Severn dominated most of the way. He nearly tapped Striker out with the Wakigatame early but it was broken up in the ropes. The finish saw Severn trap Striker in the choke sleeper and then follow up with the devastating Fireman’s Carry Slam to score the pin. Severn briefly stopped by the announce table post-match and said that he has his sights set on winning the 12-Man Gold Star Battle Royal and challenging for the LOW World Heavyweight title at WrestleCade IX.
Interview – Exotic Adrian Street:
The following pre-taped interview with GWA star Exotic Adrian Street took place at his palatial estate in the Royal Forest of Dean in England. His valet, Miss Linda, was at his side as Street sipped from a goblet of wine while seated in a throne like chair. The flamboyant star opened up about several topics but let it be known that he planned to defeat Angelo Poffo in their upcoming PWI Invitational Cup Tournament qualifying match in Tampa, FL (Card #884). He said that Poffo has too many distractions going on and that will make it easy to defeat him. He then discussed his recent battles with the “vermin” Jon Moxley and the “ugly brute” French Angel saying that it is a “disgrace” that he has to soil his hands on such “worthless trash”. He also talked about the huge wins he has scored this year scoring pinfalls on both Shohei “Giant” Baba of Kings Road United and Freelance star Mil Mascaras, the record seven-time LOW World Heavyweight champion. He called both men “beneath him” but said their records speak for themselves and those victories prove that he is the greatest star in LOW. If that weren’t enough he finished up by calling out none other than the undefeated “Eighth Wonder of the World” Andre the Giant boasting that should they ever meet he will hand that “big oaf” his first defeat in LOW.
●A pre-taped segment aired with “The Genius” Lanny Poffo where he addressed the situation regarding his father, Angelo Poffo, and his brother, Randy “Macho Man” Savage. He said that both men are proud men and he felt that “outside influences” are what caused the tension between the two in the AWE recently. He called out both Freelance star Bruiser Brody and manager Bobby “The Brain” Heenan claiming that they are responsible for trying to break his family apart. He noted that upcoming is a tag team bout in Bloomington, MN (Card #886) where Savage & Brody will take on Heenan’s team of the Valiant Brothers and he is worried what will happen if his father gets involved since Heenan is managing him. He also questioned the motives of Brody who has been known to go where the money is and said that Randy had better watch his back. He concluded a tense segment by staring into the camera and sending a message directly to Heenan who recently took a jab at him for calling himself “The Genius”. Taking the graduation cap and gown off he threw the items to the floor and said that it was not the “Genius” speaking but Lanny Poffo and that no one will break his family apart and Heenan and his men had better be prepared for a war.
6) S.D. Jones vs. Savage-T was a Draw (1-1):
The expiration of time match saw the popular S.D. “Special Delivery” Jones take on Savage-T who had his valet KJ Hill at ringside. She would play a role at a key point in the match distracting the referee when Jones had Savage-T pinned after the Philly shuffle and KO punch. Jones then managed to kick out after Savage-T nailed him with the Vertibreaker drawing protests from Hill. Jones went up 1-0 when he used a Sleeper Hold on Savage-T to score the submission. Hill alertly poured a glass of water over the head of Savage-T during the commercial break to wake him up. With time running out in the broadcast it was Savage-T avoiding defeat as he caught Jones with a Superkick to score the pin. That evened things up at 1-1 and Lance Russell then rang the timekeeper’s bell ending the match in a time limit draw.
LOW All-Star Wrestling (Episode 47) - WMC-TV5 Studios - Memphis, TN (Card #881)
