LOW American Wrestling Enterprise - Kiel Auditorium - St. Louis, MO (Card #975)
1) Finlay defeated Jim Powers:
The opening bout saw the popular Jim Powers from LOW All-Star Wrestling take on the “Belfast Bruiser” Finlay, one of the toughest competitors in LOW. Finlay was really aggressive early hitting the jumping knee smash several times and connecting with a short-arm clothesline for a near fall. Powers fought back with punches and a clothesline of his own but then Finlay blasted him with a European uppercut. Powers was shaken up and Finlay applied the Celtic Knot for a submission chance. Finlay kept up his attack and after some forearms in the corner he executed a Sitdown Splash on Powers to score the pin.
2) Lord Zoltan defeated Lanny Poffo:
“Leaping” Lanny Poffo attempted to get the better of the undefeated Lord Zoltan, a member of the First Family managed by Jimmy Hart, but it was disastrous. Coming off a loss to Bruiser Brody in a handicap match, where he teamed with his father Angelo Poffo, he may have taken on too much facing the mysterious Zoltan. Hart was as loud as ever at ringside shouting into his megaphone. Zoltan, on the other hand, was ruthless in his attack on Poffo. He dominated most of the way including using a foreign object on him several times. A falling chop left Poffo in a bad way and Zoltan followed hitting the Running Knee Drop to score the pin.
3) PG-13 defeated Jim Brunzell & Fred Curry by DQ:
The newly formed team of Jumpin’ Jim Brunzell & “Flying” Fred Curry took on the more experienced duo of PG-13 (J.C. Ice & Wolfie D) in this bout. PG-13 had the edge early keeping Brunzell in their corner and working him over. Curry was desperate to get the tag and he finally did when Brunzell managed to get to the corner. It was a good offensive from Curry that got his team back into it and had PG-13 reeling. Things got heated on the outside when Curry, perhaps taking after his father Wild Bull Curry, ran Wolfie D into the timekeeper’s table. Wolfie D bounced back and along with Ice double-teamed Curry on the floor. PG-13 were getting away with murder as the referee prevented Brunzell from rescuing his partner. Back inside it was PG-13 hitting the Tilt-A-Whirl on Curry with Ice going for the pin but Brunzell broke it up. Brunzell then lost his cool decking both Ice and Wolfie D before grabbing their hubcap and using it on both men. The referee called for the bell awarding a disqualification victory to PG-13.
4) The French Angel defeated Mad Dog Vachon:
To say that this one wasn’t pretty would be an understatement. The French Angel took on First Family member Mad Dog Vachon, accompanied by his manager Jimmy Hart, in a battle that that took place as much outside the ring as it did inside. Vachon scored back-to-back near falls with the Piledriver early on and The Angel was in a bad state as a result. Vachon kept up his assault using the airplane spin and the Mad Dog Pounce to great effect. The Angel began coming back and scored a near fall with the menacing palm strikes. He trapped Vachon in the Bearhug at one point but Hart interfered distracting both him and the referee. Vachon took advantage of that and hit The Angel with the megaphone before hitting a double foot stomp for another near fall. Vachon wound up being busted open and was bleeding badly before this one was over. The Angel, who also had a small cut on his head, showed no mercy biting, choking and head butting the bloody Vachon. He again locked on the Bearhug but this time Vachon incredibly battled his way out of it. Vachon came back for a final time with an equally ruthless assault biting, choking and using the mouth ripper on The Angel. The finish of a bloody brawl saw The Angel catch Vachon with a Bodyslam and press to score the pin.
5) Midnight Rockers defeated Valiant Brothers:
The Midnight Rockers (Stan Lane & Marty Jannetty) looked to bounce back from a tough loss to PG-13 by taking on the highly ranked Valiant Brothers (Jimmy “Boogie Woogie Man” Valiant & “Luscious” Johnny Valiant), members of the Heenan Family accompanied by manager Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. The Valiant’s were in control early with Jimmy working over Lane using the running elbow smash and roundhouse punches. Johnny kept up the momentum until Lane picked him off of the top rope with a bodyslam. A tag to Jannetty saw him nail Johnny with the back elbow ram scoring a two count. A follow up Superkick by Lane on Johnny saw Jimmy run in to make the save. Jimmy got things back under control for the Valiant’s and nearly put Jannetty away with the Sleeper Hold. A Midnight Lariat by Lane on Johnny looked to end it but Heenan distracted the referee. Things broke down from the there with some furious fighting on the outside but it was a second Superkick by Lane on Johnny that resulted in the pin. It was a huge win for the Midnight Rockers in what has become a tremendously competitive tag team division in LOW.
6) William Muldoon defeated Rick Rude:
“The Solid Man” William Muldoon took on Heenan Family member “Ravishing” Rick Rude in a battle of top contenders. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan was back out at ringside for this marquee match and hoping to guide Rude to victory. Rude struck with the Rude Awakening early for a big near fall. Heenan complained to the referee about a slow count there. Rude continued his offensive until Muldoon countered a dropkick and struck with the suplex. Rude took a bad bump on that one and Muldoon pounced on him scoring a two count. Muldoon followed up with some great technical skills frustrated his opponent. Rude found an opening and nailed Muldoon with a piledriver for a two count. He then hit the Rude Awakening again but this time Muldoon kicked out of it with authority. Both Rude and Heenan were stunned with that turn of events and Muldoon began taking command of the match. He battered Rude with the suplex and busted him open during another battle outside. He then hit his trademark Boy Lift and Throw prompting Heenan to interfere breaking up the count. The referee had no place for that and ejected Heenan from ringside much to the delight of the crowd. Rude protested briefly and then turned around right into another Body Lift and Throw with Muldoon scoring the pin.
7) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament Qualifying Match: Angelo Mosca defeated Angelo Poffo:
The qualifying round of the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament continued with the AWE’s own Angelo Poffo taking on SWA star Angelo “King Kong” Mosca. Poffo, like his son Lanny, was still reeling from the effects of that handicap match with Bruiser Brody but he had to shake that off for this all important match. Poffo did a nice job of it as he was able to control a good portion of the match against his larger opponent. A knee lift rattled Mosca knocking him out of the ring and Poffo followed with an attack on the floor. Poffo would also use the stepover toehold to work on Mosca attempting to wear him down. Mosca battled back and trapped Poffo in the Sleeper Hold but it was broken up in the ropes. Mosca continued on the offensive with a running clothesline and the Big Nasty Elbow Drop. He again locked on the Sleeper Hold but this time Poffo escaped lunging for the ropes with both men spilling out of the ring. After a battle on the outside Mosca trapped Poffo in a full nelson which he converted into a Sleeper Hold and the third time was the charm as Poffo went under ending a hard fought battle. Mosca won it by submission and now joins Fred Blassie, King Kong Bundy, Jim Londos and Frank Gotch in the tournament which takes place during WrestleCade X weekend.
8) LOW International Heavyweight title: Dan Severn defeated Greg Valentine© by DQ:
The main event was for all the marbles as Dan “The Beast” Severn challenged Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, accompanied by his manager Captain Lou Albano, for the LOW International Heavyweight title. Valentine arrived in St. Louis proudly knowing that his father, Johnny Valentine, had just won the LOW World Heavyweight title from Bobo Brazil (Card #974 in Norfolk, VA) making the father-and-son the two most important singles wrestlers in LOW. Severn was hoping to wipe the smile off of Valentine’s face by beating him for the championship in front of a packed house at the Kiel Auditorium. Severn, who has won both the LOW World Heavyweight and International Heavyweight titles, found himself on the defensive early. Valentine hit the falling elbow hammer and then applied the Figure Four Leglock but it was reversed into the ropes by Severn. A counter on a scoop slam attempt led to Severn hitting the fireman’s carry slam for a two count. A triple execution of the German Suplex led to Valentine bailing out of the ring and where the match took a turn for the worse. Albano tried to attack Severn but was taken down in the Wakigatame to big cheers from the crowd. Valentine then grabbed a nearby chair and slammed it across the back of Severn breaking the hold. He followed up with two more chair shots to the back and the referee called for the bell ordering a disqualification. Severn won the match but Valentine retained the title in his version three defense.
1) Finlay defeated Jim Powers:
