LOW Golden Age Wrestling - Kiel Auditorium - St. Louis, MO (Card #1073)
1) Henry Irslinger defeated Wild Red Berry:
The opening bout saw Henry Irslinger based out of Atlantic City, NJ, facing Wild Red Berry of Pittsburg, KS. Berry is better known as the manager of the Fabulous Kangaroos (Al Costello & Roy Heffernan) but is also an accomplished wrestler which he hoped to display here. He impressed early controlling the pace but a counter by Irslinger led to him scoring a two count with a Flying Headlock. Irslinger then executed an Airplane Spin and cradled the legs of Berry to score the pin.
2) Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon defeated Red Bastien & Billy Red Lyons:
The popular Flying Redheads (Red Bastien & Billy Red Lyons) had their work cut out for them as they took on Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon. This was tag team action at its finest as both veteran teams pushed each other to the limit. Lyons nearly won it with a counter cradle hold on Butcher but Mad Dog made the save. Bastien then hit a counter roll-up out of the corner on Mad Dog for a big near fall. Butcher used his power advantage late in the bout to punish Bastien including combining with Mad Dog on the illegal abdominal stretch. The Redheads battled back using rapid fire dropkicks among other quick moves attempting to secure the victory. Mad Dog turned that around with a crippling Piledriver on Bastien for a big near fall with Lyons making a timely save. The finish came shortly after when Mad Dog roughed up Bastien on the outside before planting him with another Piledriver to score the pin.
3) Wild Bull Curry defeated Larry Hennig:
Two tough brawlers went at it next as Larry “The Axe” Hennig took on the unpredictable Wild Bull Curry. This was a total war with plenty of the action taking place outside the ring. The referee allowed the two to get away with a lot as he easily could have called a disqualification several times. The turning point came when Curry avoided an attack by Hennig and struck him with a foreign object. Hennig fell out of the ring from that blow and was almost counted out. Curry followed hitting Hennig twice with the Chair Smash busting him open and that led to him scoring a controversial pin. A bloody Hennig protested the decision of the referee post-match as Curry ran amok around ringside tossing chairs and scaring away several ringsiders.
4) Lou Thesz, Antonino Rocca & Dick Hutton defeated Buddy Rogers, Gorgeous George & Killer Kowalski:
A big six-man tag team match that could have been a main event on any other card saw Lou Thesz, Antonino Rocca and Dick Hutton join forces to take on “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, Gorgeous George and Killer Kowalski. The action throughout this bout was intense especially when rivals Thesz and Rogers squared off. Rocca was a standout on his team hitting his electrifying aerial offense including the flying dropkicks. George turned things around getting the heat on Hutton to set up a strong attack by Kowalski. He nailed Hutton with the jumping elbow smash and tagged in Rogers who locked on the Figure Four Grapevine. Hutton nearly tapped out but was saved by Thesz who broke up the punishing hold. The fan favorites began a rally after that and it was Hutton who would come through for his team. After using the Abdominal Stretch on Rogers, he surprised the “Nature Boy” with the Oklahoma Sideroll scoring the pin as Thesz and Rocca cut off a save attempt. The crowd was ecstatic over the victory for Thesz, Rocca and Hutton as Rogers angrily stormed out of the ring followed by his tag team partners.
5) PWI Invitational Cup Tournament – Qualifying Match: William Muldoon defeated Rick Rude by TKO:
Qualifying round action in the PWI Invitational Cup Tournament continued as “The Solid Man” William Muldoon took on CWA star “Ravishing” Rick Rude who was accompanied by his manager J.J. Dillon. Rude was dominant during the early part of the match using his strength to his advantage, punishing Muldoon with solid moves like the Suplex and piledriver. Muldoon weathered the storm and began striking back with a Suplex attack of his own including scoring a near fall with the Body Lift and Throw. Dillon was worried at ringside as Rude took a beating and was busted open during a battle on the floor. Rude managed to mount a strong comeback and twice hit the Rude Awakening but Muldoon avoided being pinned by getting his foot over the bottom rope. Dillon argued with the referee as Rude, now blinded by the blood, looked to put Muldoon away. Instead it was Muldoon that would put Rude away when another Suplex attack left him lying in a heap on the mat. The referee got in between the combatants and with Rude unresponsive he called for the bell giving Muldoon a TKO victory by way of referee stoppage. The win allowed Muldoon to qualify for the tournament during WrestleCade 11 weekend while Rude had to be helped away from ringside by Dillon and LOW officials.
6) Don Leo Jonathan & Harley Race defeated John Pesek & The Terrible Turk by DQ:
Feature tag team action saw the “Mormon Giant” Don Leo Jonathan enlist the aid of KRU star Harley Race as his mystery partner to take on his rivals John Pesek & The Terrible Turk (Youssuf Ishmaelo). Jonathan recently competed with Race on a tour for Kings Road United in Japan and called in a favor for this match. Race readily agreed to it as it allowed him to return to his one-time home base of St. Louis and join Jonathan in a chance to exact some revenge against Pesek and The Turk. It was a good thought but much to the surprise of many Pesek and The Turk dominated the action including getting the heat on Race for an extended stretch. A lot of the action took place on the outside where all four men exchanged punishing blows. The Turk nearly put Race away with the controversial Stranglehold but he managed to get to the ropes for a break. A back Suplex by Race set up Jonathan hitting an atomic drop on Pesek for a near fall. Pesek struck back trapping Jonathan in the Double Wristlock but that was broken up in the ropes. The finish saw The Turk go back to the Stranglehold using it on Jonathan but this time the referee disqualified him for his refusal to release it in the ropes. Jonathan and Race got the technical win and a rematch has been signed for the next GAW card in Chicago, IL (Card #1082).

A gut wrench backbreaker and spinning neckbreaker resulted in big near falls for Roop. Lewis battled back and scored two counts on a counter cradle hold and counter roll-up out of the corner. A full nelson on Roop nearly led to a tap out but he fought out of the hold. Lewis then pounced on Roop and trapped him in the Strangler’s Headlock resulting in a snake eyes submission victory. Roop was eliminated from contention but he showed great class by shaking hands with Lewis afterward. Lewis now joins George Hackenschmidt, Jushin Liger, Dutch Savage, King Kong Bundy, Nick Bockwinkel, and William Muldoon in the ninth annual tournament which takes place during WrestleCade 11 weekend.
8) LOW World Heavyweight title: Andre the Giant© defeated Frank Gotch to retain the title:

Gotch had a great game plan going against the 7’5’ 450-pound world heavyweight champion as he attacked the legs early and often using the ankle pick and double leg takedown. Andre grew increasingly frustrated but after getting an opening he punished Gotch using his size and strength. He also battered Gotch on the outside of the ring much to the delight of Heenan. A thunderous underhook suplex and a big headbutt by Andre resulted in a two count. Gotch fought back and used the grinding hammerlock for a submission chance. Andre got to the ropes for a break and then rallied back himself twice hitting the sit-down splash resulting in a big near fall. Heenan loudly yelled at the referee protesting a slow count but the official reprimanded the manager. A short time later Gotch staged a big rally and caught Andre in the Gotch Toehold but the champion broke out of it. Gotch then locked on a Crossface and Armbar going for the submission. It looked like Andre was about to tap out when Heenan, after placing brass knuckles on his hand, reached in and punched Gotch in the head. The referee missed that shot and Andre rolled over on top of Gotch to score the pin and retain the title. It was a successful version one title defense for Andre but it was not without controversy. The local press spoke to Gotch afterward and the two-time world champion said that he would petition LOW Commissioner Charlie Cox for a rematch.
