And the aCe starts anew.
The new aCe is such a departure from the previous three sets that it kind of caught me off guard. The previous sets of aCe have been heavily story/character driven with a tremendous amount of emphasis on the action in the ring as part of a big picture.
2122 aCe is now a 'standard' fed not unlike a CPC/GWF amalgamation. In fact there's not a backbone story to set up the whole year that promoters have come to feel comfortable with in the past, but this is not necessarily a bad thing.
The new aCe is much more open ended with quite a few 'rogue' (unaffiliated) wrestlers that are very akin to the new CPC style of play. This lends the fed to a promoter, free booking style that is popular with those that don't go by the book. The factions that have formed are of a variety of head count so straight up faction feuds will be challenging, but the promoter can get creative with 'rogue' wrestlers filling in empty slots.
Top notch art and solid characters with some pretty steep stats really bring the aCe up to the table with the GWF/CPC in terms of wrestling talent. Not that the previous aCe couldn't compete, but with very specific aCe style stats some of the talent's 'killer' moves would be useless in the GWF/CPC.
I do have to say with a little trepidation that I do miss the exclusion of the H/S/R/U system that Osk developed. Having them really made each pairing of matches specific to that match. This was such a cool feature that I really feel it was such a step forward and it's what really set aCe apart in game mechanics from the other big two. It did add another level of complexity to the card design and when playing you had to keep it in mind, but absolutely worth it.
As a by the book player I can honestly say the new aCe is quite possibly the loosest book yet, outside of CotG Genesis. I imagine with this new updated throughout the year feature that will be implemented with this new aCe set we will begin to see story come back to the forefront, but until then the aCe feels like a mish mosh of talent that the player will make this wholly new entertainment based fed from.
Absolutely worth playing if your the type of player who is looking for a jumping on point and was turned off by the Sci-Fi element and crazy mechanics of the previous aCe. For those that really enjoyed the craziness of the aCe of yore you may be disappointed in the back to basics feel, but the freedom and creativity to book some interesting combinations of matches may be a big draw.
