So, I came up with this new idea as I was feeling a bit burned out on the 3 promotions from my "original" universe. I will return to them eventually, but for now..............
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is late 2086. Thantos' horrible miscalculation has led to the collapse of the original GWF. Yes, he broke the Galactic Code (and perhaps it needed breaking) but the over-the-top methods drove the fans away. Soon after, the promotion folded. But the thirst for wrestling action remained. A group of investors buy the (now worthless) GWF name and slowly contact the many legends (and some newcomers) to the "new" GWF. But this is different. Taking a cue from the ancient (and now defunct) sport of Sumo, the new group plots it's foundation:
It is decided that the wrestlers will be in 4 classifications: Grand Champion, Champion, Master and Competitor. There will always be 24 wrestlers at these ranks, 2 each of Grand Champions, Champions and Masters. The rest will be Competitors (number 1-9, lower numbers being better) of which there will be 2 of each. Future wrestlers will be added to a "Junior" division. Each rank will have 2 wrestlers labeled "Red" and "Blue". The wrestler at Red is considered a half-step higher than Blue.
There will be 6 tournaments a year, held in odd numbered months. Before each tournament (including the first) the current ranking will be published. Each tournament will be held over 15 days. On the 15th day, the competitors at each rank will face each other (so the Grand Champions will meet, the Champions will meet, the Masters will meet, etc) subject to the constraint that 2 wrestlers from the same stable will not meet. (OOC note: the official canon will be respected with respect to stables. Loose affiliations do not count, only actual "full-time" stables/teams, so, for example, Thantos in 2087 is not affiliated with anyone and same thus face anyone else during a tournament). The first day's matches for each tournament will be determined randomly with one Red wrestler facing one Blue wrestler subject to the constraint that they are not from the same stable and will not meet on Day 15. On every other day (2-14), every effort will be made to match winners from the previous day against each other and losers from the previous day against each other. This will be respected with the constraint that no wrestler will face another twice during the tournament and no wrestlers from the same stable will meet.
The Winner of the tournament will be the wrestler who finishes with the best W/L record. There will be no draws. Double Countouts/Double DQ's will be restarted in the ring after a 2 minute "cool down" period. Otherwise, the rules of the previous GWF wrestling will apply. In the event of a tie for the best record after the regularly scheduled 15 days, the tied wrestlers will playoff for the championship. They will playoff REGARDLESS of stable affiliation, so 2 wrestlers from the same stable may face each other in said playoff.
Promotion and Relegation through the ranks:
For the ranks Master-Competitor 9: Finishing with a winning record will guarantee a wrestler at least maintains their current rank. Most of the time it will mean the wrestler will advance in rank. Similarly, a losing record will guarantee that that wrestler will not advance in rank (though they may, in certain circumstances maintain their current rank). If there is a Junior division from the previous tournament, the champion of the Junior division will be promoted to Blue Competitor 9 taking the place of a wrestler in the Championship Division.
For the rank of Champion: Only Master's may advance to the rank of Champion. A Master will advance to the rank of Champion if said Master wins the Championship Division tournament. This will relegate one of the Champions down to the level of Master.*
For the rank of Grand Champion: Only Champion's can advance to the rank of Grand Champion. This will occur if a Champion wins 2 consecutive Championship Division tournaments. This will relegate one of the Grand Champions down to the level of Champion.*
*For the first tournament, and the first tournament only, the winner of the Championship Division will AUTOMATICALLY advance to the rank of Grand Champion, should a non-Grand Champion win the tournament.
We hope this spirit of individual competition along with the concept of coherent stables will bring fans back to the "new" GWF. We look forward to presenting our first tournament for you shortly. We will soon be publishing our first rankings for the tournament...
(OOC note: Yes, I get that this isn't QUITE how "real" Sumo works, but I wanted to have some way for the Grand Champions to "fall from grace" without forced retirement. Also wanted to make promotion to the last couple of ranks purely performance based.)
