Well, when I have a tournament, usual the first defense is a re-match of the finals, unless they really were one-sided. I think of ranking and who is #1 the way they do in the UFC & Strikeforce: (1) Who has a really good record and (2) Which fight would people want to see. Obviously there are fighters who stand out as the top contender (say you have a guy who is 4 or 5 wins in a row), but if not you do the best you can with what you have.

(Yesterday, I tried something different for PHF. I decided to try out Cosmic Crippler's timing and scoring system that he had posted on the Friends of Filsinger Games board some time ago. I decided I wasn't too crazy about it because it made the matches go 3 times as long as they normally would because of all of the extra time I had to take recording the points from each result. Anyway, here are the results of yesterday's card) PRIDE AND HONOR FIGHTING XV PHF Arena; Diemos, Mars May 3, 2126 MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUTMarshal Ace defeated Black Huricane by knock out at 1:45 of the first round. HEAVYWEIGHT BOUTBarrek def. Brakas by technical knock out at 4:30 of the first round. Brakas will be out of action for 6 cards. LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT BOUTKimbal def. "El Toro Loco" Carlos Torez by knock out at 4:30 of the second round. LADIES BOUTThe referee called a stop to the bout at 1:30 of the first round for the winner by submission by way of a kimura, Haley "Peanut" Jean. PHF WELTERWEIGHT TITLE BOUTTyrone Fist is still the PHF Welterweight champion when he def. Dorian Marlor by knock out at 2:00 of the first round. HEAVYWEIGHT BOUTMikey "Methane" Belcher def. Scampi Joe by technical knock out at 4:00 of the second round. Scampi Joe will be out of action for 3 cards. LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT BOUTSir def. Justin "Spider" Webber by technical knock out at 1:00 of the first round. Justin will be out of action for 3 cards. WELTERWEIGHT BOUTEnrique Dolar def. Breno Souza by technical knock out at 5:00 of the first round. Breno will be out of action for 4 cards. MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUT"Fireball" Joe Thomas def. Ken Hardonk by knock out at 4:30 of the first round. PHF LIGHTWEIGHT BOUTAli Rashid def. Little Mac by knock out at 4:00 of the fifth and final round to retain the PHF Lightweight title. MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUTAkuma def. Barnyard Brawler by a split decision by the judges (The judges scored the match 10-9, 10-9, 9-10 in favor of Akuma) after 3 rounds of action. PHF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BOUT"Irish Shillelagh" Angus McElviegh def. "Whole Wheat" Kendall Toste by knock out at 3:30 of the second round to retain the PHF Light Heavyweight title. (I've decided that tomorrow I'm going to do away with the scoring and timing system and will use a simplified point system to determine future rankings. The system will be as follows: 1. Successfully winning a title = 50 pts. 2. Successfully defending a title = 25 pts. 3. Winning a bout by submission = 20 pts. 4. Winning a bout by knock out = 10 pts. 5. Winning a bout by technical knock out = 5 pts. All points are cumulative, so for example, winning a title by technical knock out would earn a fighter 55 pts., while winning a title by submission would earn that same fighter 70 pts. The fighter with the highest total points earns a title shot. In the event of a tie, the fighter with the highest number of wins and lowest number of losses will get the title shot.)

Due to budgetary constraints, Pride and Honor Fighting was no longer able to hold shows at the GWF's home arena, the Diemos Intergalactic Arena on Mars. The cost of renting the arena went up to 2,441,256 Federates ( F) (203,438 seats x 12 Federates per seat rental price). Fortunately, because of the good working relationship that was developed between PHF and the GWF, the GWF offered PHF the use of one of its smaller venues, the Casini Auditorium on Mars, as its new home venue. The seating capacity of this venue is 20,120 and PHF would only have to pay the GWF 8 Federates per seat to hold its weekly shows there, which means that PHF would pay the GWF 160,960 Federates each week for arena rental fees. Ticket prices for each week's card will now be 20 Federates @ person.
PRIDE AND HONOR FIGHTING #19 Casini Auditorium; Mars (Seating Capacity: 20,120) May 25, 2126

(A couple of weeks ago, I was doing some MMA research on WikiPedia, and came across the Unified Rules designating weight limits for the nine different weight classes in MMA that was adopted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission: From lowest to highest, this is how they classify each weight class: WEIGHT DIVISION | UPPER WEIGHT LIMIT (IN LBS.) | Flyweight | 125 lbs. and below | Bantamweight | 125.1 to135 lbs. | Featherweight | 135.1 to 145 lbs. | Lightweight | 145.1 to 155 lbs. | Welterweight | 155.1 to 170 lbs. | Middleweight | 170.1 to 185 lbs. | Light Heavyweight | 185.1 to 205 lbs. | Heavyweight | 205.1 to 265 lbs. | Super Heavyweight | 265.1 and above |
I was thinking about using the exact same system for both POW and PHF, but the differences in weights were not consistent. I mean, between the Flyweight and Bantamweight divisions, you have an upper weight limit difference of 10 lbs., same as the differences between bantamweight and featherweight, and featherweight and lightweights. Then between the light and welterweights, the difference increases to 15 lbs. until you get to the differences between middle and light heavyweights, then it goes up to 20 lbs. But then when you get to the differences between light heavyweights and heavyweights, it shoots way up to 65 lbs. That drastically put an uncontrollable number of fighters in both of my feds in the heavyweight division, so for PHF, I've decided to restructure the five weight classes for the male fighters (Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight) where the difference between the upper weight limits is only 30 lbs. Because of this re-structuring, there were only two fighters that were left from the old lower weight classes (middleweight, welterweight, an lightweight) in the re-structured Welterweight division, Fireball Kid and Little Mac, so until I get some more fighters that fall under the re-structured weight classes below, they'll be fighting without any penalties in the Middleweight division. These are the new weight limits for PHF: WEIGHT DIVISION | UPPER WEIGHT LIMIT (IN LBS.) | Lightweight | 155 lbs. and below | Welterweight | 156-185 lbs. | Middleweight | 186-215 lbs. | Light Heavyweight | 216-245 lbs. | Heavyweight | 246 lbs. and above | Ladies | (Open Weight Class) |
Because of the re-structuring of the weight classes, "The Irish Shillelagh" Angus McElviegh is no longer the PHF Light Heavyweight champion, as he has move up in class to the Heavyweight division. The new PHF Light Heavyweight champion is former Middleweight champion, Cosmic Crippler, who will still defend the title against former Middleweight champion Shogun in a re-match from last week. Because Tyrone Fist moved up in weight class to the Heavyweight division, the new PHF Middleweight champion is former Lightweight champion Fireball Kid. Hopefully that clears everything up. Now, on to the results!)
PRIDE AND HONOR FIGHTING #21 Casini Auditorium; Mars (Seat. Cap.: 20,120) June 8, 2126
(TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 19,440)
HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH The Klingon MMA fighter M'Por got a KO victory in his debut match against Mikey "Methane" Belcher. HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH Igor V def. "El Toro Loco" Carlos Torrez by KO. MIDDLEWEIGHT MATCH UFO def. Little Mac by TKO. Little Mac will be out of action for 6 cards. LADIES MATCH Sanctuari def. Haley "Peanut" Jean by KO. LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH "Black Tiger" Hiro Chan Lee def. Akuma by submission due to a fist thrust to the throat. (Somehow, that didn't seem right, but "darkrider" had it appear in bold on the MMA thread I got it from on the Friends of Filsinger Games board when I was looking for MMA characters, so I had to go with it when I made the card version of the character.) MIDDLEWEIGHT MATCH Heinrich von Maur made a successful debut when he def. Jazaki by KO. MIDDLEWEIGHT MATCH Slog def. Ali Rashid by KO. LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH Black Hurricane def. Ken Hardonk by TKO. Ken will be out of action for 1 card. HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH Gamma Beast def. Barrek by KO. HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH Darth Fedor def. Justin "Spider" Webber by TKO. Justin will be out of action for 2 cards. HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH Sherman "Tank" Abrahms def. Ching Ling by KO. PHF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT RE-MATCH With both fighters moving up in weight class to the light heavyweight division and a middleweight title re-match was already scheduled between them for this week, the PHF championship committee decided that the middleweight title re-match will now be a re-match for the light heavyweight title, with the same stipulation that Shogun must re-capture the title or his current earned points would be re-set to 0. Knowing that if he lost that it would be a long climb back up the rankings ladder, Shogun def. Cosmic Crippler by TKO to become the PHF Light Heavyweight champion. Cosmic Crippler will be out of action for 4 cards.

I think customizing the weight classes is fine. The unified rules above are just a snapshot result of the NJSAC version of what is fair. In reality, it doesn't prevent guys from playing the rules to their advantage with water weight cutting schemes. Historically, Vale Tudo (from which UFC was derived) purposely featured fights with size disparity. Legends like Rei Zulu and Ivan Gomes were promoted as men with unique styles as opposed to champions of a certain weight. Originally UFC adopted the same marketing technique. Rorion Gracie pushed the visual of 'big man vs small man' to sell his family's brand of jiu jitsu as living proof of technique overcoming size/strength handicaps. Every fight was open weight. The carnival vibe was slowly lost in the U.S. as sanctioning through athletic commissions became a goal. For a game like this you need flexibility, along with some form of mechanic that measures the effect of attempted weight cuts and a modifier when the cut goes bad.
