What in your opinion is some of the events that changed wrestling for the better?
SOME OF MINE ARE
1-The Birth of Hulkamania
2-EXtreme Championship Wrestling was born-Without them who knows where wrestling have gone and we probably never seen people like Eddie Guerrero,Rob Van Damm,Chris Benoit,Dean Malenko and many others
3-The Others invade WCW and start the Monday Night Wars
4-Eric Bishoff Fires Stunning Steve Austin who goes to ECW then enter Stone Cold Steve Austin
5-Wrestlemania 1
Just to name a few

Here are a few other positive events that changed pro wrestling: * Increased exposure through the DuMont Network (the importance of such prime television access can't be overstated; created a new generation of fans and planted the seeds for those to come)
* Birth of the Apter mags (the old Stanley Weston family of publications expanded fan access to kayfabe wrestling news throughout the 70s and beyond...for some fans it was their only connection to distant talent and promotions)
* Emergence of cable (once closed territories in cities and states around the country were opened to the eyes of a national audience...there was a short lived era of never before seen product diversity...but VKM's drive for empire would soon come knocking!)
* Success of Wrestlemania III/establishment of PPV as a viable business medium (countless sports & entertainment promoters across the spectrum owe VKM for his vision/willingness to take such a huge unproven risk; in the process he revolutionized the marketing of live events on a broad scale that lasts to this day)

A few others I can think of Superstar Billy Graham allows heels to be cool. The Horsemen take the concept of groups to a new level. Vince gives Bret a chance and shows that you don't have to be Hulk Hogan sized to do something as World Champion

The single most important factor that changed pro wrestling was Hulk Hogan leaving the AWA and joining the WWF. Without that happening, there are no Wrestlemanias, no Hulkamania, the entire thing does not happen. It took Vince's vision and Hogan's ring psychology for that to take place.

US wrestling to hit our shores. Before that, we were bored with our own, ahem, superstars.

Who would ever think a squash match would be one of the things that one could list in this thread?
One of the big changes to pro wrestling was cable television. Cable television did such things like bringing Georgia Championship Wrestling to Texas living rooms.
One of the, if not THE. most successful wrestling/cable network relationships has been WWF/E and USA. But, Southwest Championship Wrestling was on USA before WWF was. Until SWCW found out the hard way that USA didn't like blood.
Eric Embry was still just a squash jobber scheduled to face The Grappler. Southwest Heavyweight Champion and top heel Tully Blanchard comes in and gives Embry a title match instead. During the match, Embry blades and bleeds like a stuck pig.
USA network was so horrified by the act that they immediately cancelled Southwest Championship Wrestling from their programming. Opening the door for Vince (whose attempt to run WWF from TBS was a total failure) to bring WWF programming to USA network. And the rest is history.
There's a wrestling what-if for ya. What if Embry doesn't blade in this match:

USA network was so horrified by the act that they immediately cancelled Southwest Championship Wrestling from their programming. Opening the door for Vince (whose attempt to run WWF from TBS was a total failure) to bring WWF programming to USA network. And the rest is history. The spot on USA was akin to a paid infomercial. At the time of cancellation, Joe Blanchard was in arrears on his payments. The blood incident coincided with money being owed, and a young Vince offering to pay cash spot each week with a lump sum in advance. It's not a surprise which direction the network went with. Like most promoters of the territory days, Blanchard was in over his head and totally lost after basic booking operations. The difference between SCW and the WWF going forward was that Vince successfully monetized his campaign. Paying for access to new markets lead to increased revenues through touring and merchandising. It was a formula VKM replicated on a micro level throughout the country, 'paying' for television time in established wrestling markets where local promoters were used to airing their shows for little or no money. As he took away their exposure (and talent), he gained their markets while they were hung out to dry.
