I have been meaning to post this recap from Saturday's amazing PWG show for awhile, but since this week at work marked the end of the First Quarter I have been extremely busy. But today is Nevada Day which means a paid day off, so I will finally post my recap now.
Steen Wolf definitely had the biggest crowd for any PWG show at the Legion Hall since Seven back in July of 2010 with 3 separate lines with two of those lines stretching all the way around back of the building. But since I had a front row ticket, I got in immediately without really having to stand in line (as the front row line was already being admitted when I got there) and I was able to save 3 second row seats right behind me for Tom, Toasterboy, and Thormassive.
As soon as I got in the building, before I took my seat and saved the other seats, I saw El Generico at the PWG merchandise table and I asked him to sign my new El Generico CHIKARA card that had just been released earlier that day and El Generico told me he was really glad to be in the game.
The show itself started after everyone got into the Legion Hall with Excalibur speaking to the crowd. Excalibur once again had to tell the crowd not to drink and smoke pot in the Legion Hall's parking lot prior to the show. As Excalibur explained once again, it is a liquor license issue and PWG may lose the Legion Hall for future shows if drinking and drug use continues on Legion Hall property before the show, but some of the fans unfortunately still do not get the message.
Excalibur told the fans instead to drink across the street in the CVS parking lot or (jokingly) told them to even drink their beer while they drive to the show (Excalibur said as far as he knows it is OK as long as the beer is inside a paper bag ;D) but do
NOT drink in the parking lot before the show. Personally I have never drank in the parking lot before a PWG show, but my guess is some idiot will still drink in the parking lot before the next PWG show in December.
Excalibur also addressed what happened in the main event of PWG World Champion Kevin Steen vs Davey Richards at the previous PWG show The Perils of Rock N' Roll Decadence where a few drunk fans sitting across the building from me tried to get themselves over at the expense of the actual match. Excalibur told the crowd: "You are not the focus of the show. The focus of the show is what goes on inside this ring." Excalibur then said fans who think otherwise are "assholes and assholes will be asked to leave!"
Excalibur is awesome!
The show started off with a traditional PWG 6 man tag match with Famous B, Chris Kadillak, and Candice LeRae defeating "Pretty" Peter Avalon, Freddy Bravo, and Ray Rosas. This match (featuring 6 local SoCal wrestlers who have all made recent appearances on NWA Hollywood) was also the PWG debuts for Famous B, Kadillak, Bravo, and Rosas.
In the next match, TJ Perkins (who just signed with ROH and who looks like he is also going to become a regular for PWG once again- he first made his name in PWG years ago and during his early Indy years around SoCal he was managed by LOW's SoCal Val) defeated Rocky Romero.
The RockNES Monsters defeated the Fightin' Taylor Boys who were accompanied to the ring by Chuck Taylor himself. The action spilled out into the seats on our side of the ring with Johnny Goodtime and Johnny Yuma making some insane dives onto the Taylors and into the crowd.
Davey Richards defeated Willie Mack. Afterwards, Richards gave a speech thanking PWG for giving him a chance years ago back when nobody else would. Richards then said if you are first known as a fan in the crowd who becomes a wrestler (Willie Mack infamously sat in the front row for many PWG shows before becoming a wrestler) then it actually becomes 200 times harder to win the respect of the wrestlers in the back for you as a wrestler but that Willie Mack has earned his (Richards's) respect. Davey Richards then said the crowd also now needs to start chanting the names of future stars on the PWG roster like Willie Mack and Future Shock.
Then it was intermission where Tom and me signed someone for the game and Tom offered to buy me a beer. While me and Tom were at the bar after getting our drinks, the Legion Hall's head of security kept asking us not to stand so close to the bar so I eventually went back to my seat. While making my way back to my front row seat, I almost got nailed by Scorpio Sky (my personal favorite wrestler on the current NWA Hollywood roster) as Joey Ryan suddenly threw one of the Los Luchas out of the ring right in front of where I was walking and Scorpio Sky was about to dive through the ropes onto him right where I was walking back to my front row seat. With no guard rail at PWG separating front row fans from the action, that stuff happens sometimes. The Dynasty won the match.
In the next match, Ricochet (who once wrestled in CHIKARA as Helios) defeated his friend Chuck Taylor.
In the next match, the PWG World Tag Team Champions the Young Bucks defeated Future Shock (Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly.)
The Young Bucks are an incredible tag team who routinely put on great matches in PWG, but they stepped it up here and IMO this was the best Young Bucks match at PWG since at least DDT4 back in March. At one point it seemed so certain that Future Shock was about to make the Young Bucks tap out and win the PWG World Tag Team Championship in their PWG debut that a guy right behind me shouted "No way! It's their first show!" The Bucks did retain and the crowd loudly and repeatedly chanted "Please come back! Please come back! Please come back!" to Future Shock who will indeed return to PWG at PWG's next show in December in a match against the RockNES Monsters.
The main event itself of PWG World Champion Kevin Steen vs El Generico in a ladder match was a perfect awesome example of why wrestling fans watch wrestling period! I think this was just the second ladder match ever in PWG History! For the match, referee Rick Knox (Christian's recent lawyer on Smackdown) officiated most of the action while outside of the ring because (I think) to make sure the ladders didn't hit any of the fans.
One of the absolute best matches I have ever seen in PWG (and that is extremely high praise because I have seen so many many amazing matches in PWG!) The end came with one of the most indelible moments in wrestling history for me from ANY fed in ANY country ever as Steen was climbing the ladder to retain the title until his enemies the Young Bucks came out and interfered allowing El Generico to win and when El Generico grabbed the belt the entire ceiling vent the title was attached to also came out and El Generico was on top of the ladder pumping his fist in one hand while the other hand held his newly won PWG World Championship still firmly attached to the detached ceiling vent! Awesome, awesome, awesome! This was not just a 5 star wrestling moment, this was a billion trillion zillion star wrestling moment!
And then even MORE wrestling history was made as the Bucks attacked both Steen and Generico and challenged Steen (who they have been feuding with all year long) to a guerrilla warfare tag match at PWG's final 2011 show in December and then remarked how Steen did not have a partner. Suddenly the lights in the Legion Hall went dark (they flickered at one point earlier in the show too) and when the lights went back on Super Dragon himself made his sudden unexpected and dramatic return inside a PWG ring for the first time since May of 2008 attacking the Young Bucks. Afterward, Super Dragon helped up his former PWG enemy Steen (they once fought an amazing guerrilla warfare match against each other which I own on DVD) who announced Super Dragon as his partner next month against the Young Bucks in a tag team guerrilla warfare match of the PWG World Tag Team Championship!
The fans went berserk while all on their feet and pounded the ring apron with repeated thunderous chants of "Super Dragon, Super Dragon, Super Dragon" and "Show of the year, Show of the year, Show of the Yearr" which again is extremely high praise considering the 2011 PWG has had with one more incredible show lineup in December that has already sold out the front row at a faster pace than any other show ever for PWG (I am really glad I stayed up after midnight on Monday night to make my front row ticket order even though I had to wake up at 5:00 AM the next day for work, if I waited to make my order the next day when I got home I would not have been to sit in the front row as usual for the next show.)
PWG's next show in December includes Super Dragon and Kevin Steen vs the PWG World Tag Team Champions in a guerrilla warfare tag match, new PWG World Champion El Generico vs Dick Togo in a non-title match (this is reportedly the final North American show in Dick Togo's current retirement tour,) the American Wolves vs Super Smash Brothers, and the Amazing Red in his PWG debut vs Roderick Strong! Plus an 8 man tag match, Kenny King vs TJ Perkins, Future Shock vs the RockNES Monsters and more!
