10 years, 250 million. No trade clause.
I think Pujols is easily the best offensive player in the game currently but I think the Angels will regret this deal. Pujols is already showing signs of decline and I think by year 4 of this deal he won't be worth the money. Just my opinion on this though.

I don't know how MLB contracts are constructed, but if they front loaded the contract and gave him $30 million a year for the first 5, they would only owe him $100 mil over the final 5.

That's a possibility. There's a no trade clause though so he's there for the whole of his contract. I image it's going to be evenly spilt over the 10 years.

Exactly why would this matter?? According to my math, $250 mil is $250 mil. They would only owe him $100 over the final 5 years. $20 mil a year for an old DH. What a bargain!!

It needs to be said. There are legit questions about how old Pujols is and they might have just signed a guy that's really 34 to a 10 year deal.

Not saying it is a bargain. Just stating that paying the majority earlier in the deal would lessen the suicide chance when, in 2017, they realize they aren't paying nearly as much. At least it isn't the reported 274million that FloridaMiami threw at him. And, it really doesnt matter. Because even with Pujols on the books for all of that money, they can and have shown (this year at least) they are willing to spend more.

If Pujols can stay healthy and his numbers are revived in LA, the Angels could be making big bucks with Pujols chasing the HR record when & if that time comes around. Yes, it all relies on his health / performance and the team around him. I don't see St.Louis having too much of a problem losing Pujols, but losing Tony might have a bigger effect. Then again St.Louis have been winners in the past and I'm sure they'll have more success in the future...
