Avarice, Brian VW & Kyle, Connor and myself made the trek to the Forte Ballroom for the last 3XW show of 2011, Holiday Havoc 3. We started 2011 with a 70 minute Iron Man match between Mark Sterling and Jeremy Wyatt. Last night's main event was Sterling vs. Wyatt with the Heavyweight title on the line!
1) Gage Octane defeated rookie Ray Striker. Octane made fun of Striker's fireman gimmick and said he should be in the main event, not the opener. After Octane got the pinfall, Striker extended his hand to congratulate him. Octane shook his hand, which enraged manager Todd Countryman. Countryman put the boots to Striker, while a disgusted Octane left the ring. The dissension between Octane and Countryman has been brewing for months. I'm hoping we see an Octane face turn in early 2012!
2) Loser Leaves Genesis Match - Devin Carter pinned Zach Thompson, forcing Thompson out of Genesis. Tony Sly was also a participant. Due to losing falls in last month's 10 man elimination match, these three were put in a match by Genesis manager Todd Countryman, where the loser of the fall was kicked out of Genesis. Carter & Sly double teamed Thompson for most of the match. Thompson made a comeback but was cut off by Sly, who hit him with his falling elbow drop/neckbreaker. As Sly was boasting to Countryman, Carter pinned Thompson. After the match, Sly shoved Carter and attacked Countryman for Carter stealing the pinfall. He went to hit his finisher on Countryman, but Carter made the save. Sly left the ring to a mixed reaction from the crowd, most of whom didn't know what to think.
3) 3XW Pure Championship - Arik Cannon defeated Jimmy Rockwell to retain the title. Cannon continued his heel turn, after using underhanded tactics to beat Sir Bradley Charles for the title last month. A great back and forth match saw Cannon hit an awesome slingshot suplex into a spinning neckbreaker for a very close nearfall. Rockwell almost won the title after nailing Cannon with a 2nd rope code breaker followed by a gourdbuster. Cannon kicked out and got the win with his brainbuster after Rockwell missed his Rock On Bomb sention.
4) 3XW Tag Team Championship - Ben Sailer & Nate Bash (American Ground & Air) beat AJ Smooth & Ryan Slade (Sexy & Smooth) to retain the titles. This match featured two referees at the request. Even with two referees, one is bound to get knocked out. After that occured, Zach Thompson ran in to interfere on behalf of the champions by attacking AJ Smooth. The champions used their wheelbarrow suplex/stunner combo to get the pinfall on Smooth. After the match, Slade challenged Thompson to a match in January.
It was interesting to see Thompson interfere on behalf of Sailer & Bash. Technically, Sailer & Bash are members of Genesis, but Todd Countryman never appears in their corner for matches or backstage with them for interviews. Thompson was kicked out of Genesis but still interfered in the match. Are Sailer, Bash & Thompson forming their own faction?
After a brief intermission, we continued with....
5) Flag Match - Maddog McDowell & Jon West (American Bulldogs) beat Ricky Kwong & the MAULER (Mylan Management Agency). These two teams have been feuding since June in various combinations of singles and tag matches, with managers Chad Mylan and Skylar Pierce getting in for six man tags! This match had the flags of the US and Laos hanging in opposite corners. To win the match, you had to grab your flag.
Before the match started, Chad Mylan announced that Domino Rivera was injured last month and would be out 6-8 months with a shoulder injury. He even mentioned Avarice's "Deport Domino" Facebook group! Mylan brought out Rivera's replacement, hailing from Syria, the completely evil, sadistic, the MAULER! Both teams slugged it out in the ring, with the Bulldogs' double teams, Kwong's karate kicks, and the MAULER's brutality! The end saw the Bulldogs lay Kwong out in the middle of the ring, so Jon West could climb up and grab the American flag. As he held the flag, West hit a picture perfect moonsault on Kwong!
6) Casanova pinned Sir Bradley Charles with a rolling cradle and fistful of tights after a distraction by Arik Cannon. SBC hoped for an impressive showing, so he could claim his rematch with Cannon for the Pure title. Cannon came out to make sure that didn’t happen. SBC grabbed the mic after the match to demand his rematch, but Cannon declined to give him one.
7) Jaysin Strife defeated Sparrow with some wacky move. Lots of high flying crazy moves in this match. Both guys are OK, but I don’t really care for either one of them. This was the equivalent of the women’s match before the main event on a WWE PPV.
8) 3XW Heavyweight Championship – Mark Sterling beat Jeremy Wyatt with an Emerald Frosien type move in 33 minutes. Awesome, awesome match. Sterling injured Wyatt’s knee last month in a backstage sneak attack. Both men exchanged brutal strikes throughout the match. The referee was knocked out during the match, meanwhile Wyatt forced Sterling to tap to the crossface. A second referee came down to the ring as Wyatt and Sterling went for their finishers. Sterling hit a brutal pair of spears but couldn’t get the pinfall. Wyatt went for the Lightning Spiral but Sterling blocked, hit the finisher, and got the pinfall. This is Sterling’s first run with the 3XW Heavyweight Championship.
A very good show to end 2011. 3XW has really improved their live event production lately, with great lighting and a big screen with interviews and promos from backstage during the show. Twice on the big screen during the show, they hyped NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pierce defending his title on January 27, 2012. I think 2012 will be a big year for 3XW!
