Welcome to your new weekly dose of Filsinger Games legends action!
Card 1 – Legends @ Capital Center – Landover, MD – July 26, 2013
Jim Powers v. Butcher Vachon
Powers gets a friendly reaction as he makes his way to the ring. These two get plenty of time but the action really does drag at times. Powers survives the occasional power assault from Butcher to rebound with a couple of near falls with cross body blocks. Neither man is able to hit their finisher by the time Butcher mounts the corner for the match ending deathjump but Powers rolls clear and Butcher crashes to the mat allowing Powers to get the three count. Nice finishing sequence. **
Commissioner Charlie Cox addresses the fans from the ring and announces that the first Legends Champion will be determined tonight in an over the top rope elimination battle royal! The fans cheer wildly but the cheers quickly change to jeers as Bobby Heenan leads Nick Bockwinkel to the ring. Heenan and Bockwinkel confront the Commissioner and question the decision to have the Title decided by a Battle Royal warning the Commissioner that anything can happen in that type of match. Heenan asks whether the Commissioner really wants Koko B. Ware to be the Champion when someone like Nick Bockwinkel is on the roster - a multiple time World Champion and a title holder in every area he has ever competed. Heenan refers to Bockwinkel as the real champion. Bockwinkel tells the fans that it insulting that he has to step into the ring with 15 other wrestler to compete for something the Commissioner should just be awarding to him. Cox tells Heenan that he thinks Koko B. Ware would be an honourable champion and then tells both men if they do not like the idea of a Battle Royal to determine the first champion then they do not have to participate in the match. Cox tells Bockwinkel he can consider himself the first person eliminated from the Battle Royal and then calls for security to escort the two men from ringside and presumably from the building.
Christina Von Eerie v. Trinity Denucci
Woman’s action is up next with a Rock v. Punk match up. Von Eerie roughs up DeNucci from start to finish. DeNucci avoids a after a side slam and the bout comes to an end at ringside when Von Eerie is disqualified for running DeNucci into the ringpost. Some nice heat for Von Eerie as she flips off the fans and leaves ringside. dud
Brian Kendrick & Paul London v. Love Brothers (Hartford Love & Reginald Love)
The Love Brothers are out to solid heat from ringside. Both teams make tags to keep the action going back and forth. The pace is quick and that seems to favour Kendrick and London until the Love Brothers get some heat on Paul London and prevent him from getting the tag. London survives a DOUBLE SLAM and a NECKBREAKER to come back and hit a spinning neckbreaker (ch) out of nowhere on Reginald Love for three count. * ½
Jerry Lynn v. Konnan
Konnan attacks Lynn from behind as Lynn is entering the ring area and Lynn eats the ring post. Lynn is already a bloody mess when the bell sounds to start the match and the fans area all over Konnan. Konnan keeps up his assault but Lynn finds a way to kick out of several pin attempts with the fan support getting stronger each time. Lynn makes his comeback and a German suplex sends Konnan to the floor. The Latin competitor regains the upper hand during a brawl on the floor. Lynn survives a 187 but falls to a TEQUILA SUNRISE. A violent win for Konnan. ** ½
Fabulous Kangaroos (Roy Heffernan & Al Costello) w/Red Berry v. James Gang (Kip James & BG James)
The fans really enjoy the pre-match antics of the James Gang and absolute loath the Kangaroos as they arrive carrying a banner and tossing out cardboard boomerangs to the crowd. The James Gang take the early advantage but some timely interference from Berry turns the match in favour of the Kangaroos. Kip James is cut off for some time but the Kangaroos are never able to get his shoulders to the mat before BG James makes the hot tag against Al Costello. James hits the James Gang Pounce for a near fall on Costello and then connects with a PUMP HANDLE SLAM. Kip James takes out Heffernan and the referee makes the three count. **
Simply Luscious & Angle Orsini v. Sara Del Rey & Daizee Haze
We get a rare double shot of women’s action tonight. The teams are well matched and trade off counters early on. There is still no team with an advantage when Orsini and Del Rey tear up ringside in a wicked brawl. The referee comes out to get the action back in the ring but Orsini shoves the official to the floor and keeps on fighting. The referee immediately calls for the disqualification as all four woman trade blows and fight back to the dressing room. *
Legends Title Battle Royal – Mad Dog Vachon, Masked Superstar, Rikidozan, Bobby Shane, Mil Mascaras, Koko B. Ware, Nigel McGuinness, Rob Van Dam, Brad Armstrong, Tiger Mask, Johnny Saint, Eddie Gilbert, Mad Dog Vachon, Rick Rude, Tommy Rich, Danny Hodge
Commissioner Charlie Cox is seated at ringside with the Legends title belt ready to present it to the winner of the match. The action is insane from the opening bell with fists flying everywhere. Tommy Rich and Rick Rude take their battle to the floor and both men are quickly busted open. Masked Superstar joins the battle on Rude’s side but Rich manages to hang on. Tiger Mask connects with a TIGER SUPLEX on Eddie Gilbert and Masked Superstar charges to his rescue only to get backdropped by Mask to the floor for the first elimination. Rikidozan singles out Koko B. Ware and punishes him with THUNDEROUS CHOPS before whipping the Birdman into the corner but Ware counters Rikidozan’s charge with a backdrop that eliminates the Japanese competitor. In a battle of competitors from the United Kingdom, Johnny Saint gets the best of Nigel McGuinness and tosses him to the floor. Danny Hodge avoids Mad Dog Vachon’s charge in the corner and backdrops Vachon from the match. Saint continues to look very impressive stunning Shane with a JOHNNY SAINT SPECIAL before tying him up with a THREE IN ONE. Shane is then easily dumped to the floor for Saint’s second elimination of the match. Rob Van Dam connects with a legdrop across the guardrail on Playboy Buddy Rose and the fans eat it up. RVD ends Rose’s bid for the gold moments later. Koko B. Ware stuns Rick Rude with a GHOSTBUSTER in the middle of the ring and the fans love it. Eddie Gilbert tries to save Rude but arrives too late and Rude bounces to the floor. The Birdman has eliminated two. The junior heavyweights are really showing they know how to compete in a big man’s match. It is several minutes before the next elimination which comes when Koko B. Ware catches Johnny Saint with a perfect dropkick that spills the Englishman over the top to the floor. Tiger Masks take a beating from Rob Van Dam including a legdrop across the rails and a Van Daminator! Brad Armstrong steps in against Mask but the Japanese superstar still has something left and catches Armstrong with a series of jumping spin kicks before dumping him to the floor for his second elimination of the night. Koko B. Ware’s night finally comes to an end when Mil Mascaras executes a series of deep arm drags and then tosses the Birdman from the match. Danny Hodge traps Tommy Rich in a sleeper in the corner and Rich cannot shake him. Hodge then easily eliminates a dazed Wildfire. While this was happening, Rob Van Dam crushes Eddie Gilbert in the middle of the ring with a perfect FIVE STAR FROG SPLASH and then tosses him to the floor. Mascaras battles Mask and Van Dam takes the fight to Hodge. Things switch up as the match continues and Mascaras catches Hodge with a spectacular FLYING BODYPRESS and then eliminates him from the bout. Van Dam connects with another leg drop across the rails on Tiger Mask and then tosses him back into the ring where Mascaras is waiting. A CROSSBODY ATTACK is the finishing blow and Mask is tossed to the floor. It is Rob Van Dam v. Mil Mascaras. Van Dam unleashes everything against the masked legend from Mexico but cannot find a way to get Mascaras over the top rope. Mascaras rolls clear of a deathjump smash and takes over but also struggles to find a way to get his opponent out of the ring. At one point Van Dam catches Mascaras on the top of the corner but the Mascaras is able to fall into the ring before Van Dam can knock him to the floor. Mascaras is able to stun Van Dam with a CROSSBODY ATTACK and then muscles Van Dam over the ropes to the floor to win the match. The crowd is on their feet for the finish and Commissioner Cox presents Mascaras with the Title. ***
News and Views: Congratulations to Mil Mascaras for surviving a Battle Royal to claim the Legends Title. Special mention has to go to Koko B. Ware who appears to have drawn some inspiration from the comments of Bobby Heenan earlier in the night and put in a stellar performance eliminating three men from the match himself before being tossed to the floor by the eventual winner . . . Commissioner Cox has already stirred up some controversy by removing Nick Bockwinkel from the Battle Royal and sending both Bockwinkel and his manager home for the night. Heenan was threatening legal action as he was being escorted from the arena . . . Commissioner Charlie Cox has determined that the first challenger to the Legends Title will be Rob Van Dam and that bout will take place at the Boston Garden in two weeks’ time . . . The back stage rumours are all about contracts this time around and in particular the contract of the current Legends Champion. Mascaras was brought in by promoters as a means to add some more star power to tonight’s battle royal and was originally booked to also participate in the Tag Team Title Tournament. Rumour has it that his contract could only be a few weeks long which now puts Management in a tight position. If Mascaras retains in two weeks and his contract expires… then what? Mascaras has long been known to be difficult to deal with at the best of times but he appears to be holding all the cards and could turn his victory tonight into a big payday.
Up Next, we head to Civic Center in Portland ME for another night of Legends action. The following bouts have been signed
• In a special challenge match, Koko B. Ware has something to prove to Nick Bockwinkel. Will the words of Bobby Heenan prove costly or will the Birdman come up short in his battle for respect?
• In what must be considered a dream match, mat specialist Danny Hodge will face the high flyer from Japan, Tiger Mask
• In a battle of competitors for the United Kingdom, Johnny Saint takes on Nigel McGuinness
• Big six man action will take place as Tommy Rich joins forces with Brad & Bob Armstrong to take on Jimmy Hart’s First Family members Rick Rude, Masked Superstar and Eddie Gilbert.
• The first Legends Tag Team Champions will be determined in Portland in a four team tournament. It is not clear how the fans will react to the fan favorite pairing of Mascaras and Konnan who attacked Lynn before the bell tonight and left his opponent a bloody mess.
