Wow! Apparently the WWE just signed my favorite wrestler in PWG!
- AIW Wrestling out of Ohio announced on Twitter that independent wrestling standout Drake Younger has signed a developmental deal with WWE. They wrote:
"Congrats to former Absolute Champ @drakeyounger317 on his WWE contract. Couldn't happen to a better guy! #PMA"

Just read on pro wrestling torch that it may not be as a wrestler. Apparently a role as a referee is possible, which makes no sense in my opinion...and another factor in my love/hate relationship with the WWE

Interesting. Out of all the indy stars out there he is one that I would have expected to sign with WWE the least. Not a shot at Younger, though. It just never occurred to me that WWE would look at someone like him.

If Chris Hero didn't fit the bill, where is Drake gonna land. I don't get it.

This may sound crazy, but I read a very interesting yet disturbing article yesterday that claimed WWE views NXT like an independent promotion. Much like everything else, they want to eliminate the competition in this area as well. Do you guys think it's possible they could be signing guys like Hero and Younger that don't fit the WWE 'brand' just to hurt the other indy promotions? I would put nothing past them...

I wouldn't put it past them either. But if that is what they were doing I think they would be more aggressive about it. They would cherry pick the top guys in each promotion. Cole, Elgin, Richochet, Swann, Briscoes, Fox, Steen. Snatching up these guys is what it would take to hurt the indies.

I read an interview with Triple H where he said that they do sort of want NXT to be like their indy fed. I don't think, in his eyes, they are trying to corner that market though. They just want an in-house place where these guys and gals can grow and develop and not develop "bad habits." They will learn the WWE way from day one. They apparently have a very deep developmental system now, with many, many people in the training process but not on NXT. They basically are saying, rather than having wrestlers toil on the indies or where ever, trying to learn the craft and hoping to eventually make it to WWE, they will sign prospects early, possibly with zero wrestling background, and train them in their way.

I agree with all of what you said though I will add this: WWE understands the importance of the indies. They understand that without ROH, PWG, Chikara, CZW, etc. (mostly ROH though) that finding top level talent for the developmental system that have experience is going to be insanely difficult. They know they need those promotions around so that they can cherry pick the guys they'd want, polish them and put them on TV when they're ready provided they don't go full Hero and stop working out. And then there's what pikemojo said which is pretty much right on the money.
