Card 1.18: New Haven, CT - Arena
Match 1: Ted DiBiase w/Virgil v. Dick Hutton
DiBiase draws great heat as he comes to ringside flashing the cast. Hutton and DiBiase trade moves and the former world champion takes control and picks up a near fall with a side salto. Hutton traps DiBiase in an ABDOMINAL STRETCH and DiBiase looks for assistance from Virgil but he is jarring with the fans. DiBiase submits. Hutton celebrates yet another big win as DiBiase gets into Virgil’s face. DiBiase orders Virgil to leave and then slaps him across the face. Virgil decks DiBiase with a right hook and leaves the Million Dollar Man dazed in the ring as the fans explode. (Hutton 3; DiBiase 4) (*)
Match 2: Frank Gotch & Red Bastien v. The Valiant Brothers
The fans are still buzzing after the conclusion of the last match during the introductions. Gotch and Bastien dominate the action early on but then the Valiant Brothers cut off Bastien and work him over for several minutes. Bastien survives a SPINNING NECKBREAKER and Gotch saves him from a TOP ROPE ELBOW. Gotch is finally able to hot tag in and Johnny Valiant takes a beating including a pair of rolling kneebars. Bastien is back in and quickly falls behind and the Johnny Valiant finishes him with a SPINNING NECKBREAKER. (Gotch 1; Bastien 7; Jimmy V 4 , Johnny V 6) (** ½ )
Match 3: King Kong Bundy v. Giant Baba
Baba makes his first singles appearance since card 11. The action is slow from the outset as both men attempt to tie up the other. Baba strikes with some head butts and Bundy has some success with shoulder tackles. Bundy is able to avoid a charge in the corner and Baba crashes hard into the buckles leading a near fall. Baba is able to catch Bundy with a Baba Chop of out nowhere and gets the three count. (Bundy 5; Baba 3) (*)
Match 4: Jimmy Snuka v. The Sandman
Another monster pop for the Superfly as he comes to the ring. Sandman arrives with his ribs heavily taped up. The bell sounds and Snuka quickly takes the match to the floor where Sandman grabs a chair and clocks Snuka and is promptly disqualified. The fans are not pleased with the quick DQ but Sandman is not done as he gives Snuka a HARDCORE DDT onto the area floor. Security arrives and Snuka is removed on a stretcher. (Snuka 3; Sandman 4) (dud)
Match 5: Harley Race v. The Destroyer
Last card these two men battled to a double disqualification. It is all Race early on in this one with a series of headbutt and suplexes. Destroyer is clearly frustrated and bails to the floor. Destroyer drags Race to ringside and whips him into the ring post. The referee calls for the disqualification. The fans are again cheated out of clean decision and boo Destroyer as he leaves ringside while Race shakes out the cobwebs on the arena floor. (Race 2; Destroyer 2) (dud)
Match 6: Gorgeous George & Playboy Buddy Rose w/Cherie Dupré v. Johnny & Greg Valentine
Johnny Valentine still has his knee wrapped to protect his injury suffered on Card 14. The heat for George & Rose is off the charts. Rose and George manage to work over Johnny Valentine’s injured leg early on but the action turns around when Rose gets cut off from his corner. The Valentine’s pick up a couple of near falls. George saves Rose from an ATOMIC SKULLCRUSHER and the action continues. Rose is able to catch Johnny Valentine climbing the corner and tosses Valentine to the mat and the momentum switches again. The match goes back and forth until George runs Greg Valentine face first into the rails busting him open. George is disqualified. Both teams brawl after the bell until security arrives to break things up. (George 2; Rose 7; J Valentine 4; G. Valentine 4) (** ½)
Match 7: Road Warriors v. Foreign Legion & Nikita Breznikov
Nikolai Volkoff treats the fans to a rendition of the Russian Anthem that drives the fans nuts. The fans explode as the Warriors hit ringside. Iron Sheik and Volkoff work over Hawk for a few minutes softening him up for Breznikov who tags in and tries a knee to the face but Hawk counter and tags in Animal. The Road Warriors batters Breznikov in and out of the ring until Hawk’s boot sends Breznikov into his own corner and Volkoff tags back into the match. Hawk has some trouble but eventually hot tags in Animal and the action goes to the floor. Volkoff rams Animal back first into the ring post and is disqualified. After the bell, Sheik, Volkoff & Breznikov beat down Hawk three on one until Animal recovers and breaks up the attack with a chair.(Breznikov 5; Sheik 2; Volkoff 4; Hawk 4; Animal 3) (*)
Match 8: World Title Match – Bobo Brazil (ch) v. Buddy Rogers
Rogers is out to solid heat and he jars with the fans at ringside turning the intensity up even more. The crowd erupts as Brazil makes his to his ring. Brazil dominates the early action with a solid power attack. Brazil unleashes a series of COCO BUTTS but Rogers finds a way to kick out each time. Rogers gets the advantage on the floor and nails Brazil into knee with a chair. The referee lets the action continue and Rogers traps Brazil in a FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK but Brazil makes it to the ropes with the fans roaring. Brazil regains control at ringside and dominates the remainder of the bout getting the win after back to back COCO BUTTS. (Rogers 9; Brazil 4) (*****)
News and Views: Another intense battle between the Valentines and Gorgeous George & Playboy Buddy Rose . . . The employment relationships between Ted DiBiae & Virgil is apparently over has Virgil decked his employer and left the Million Dollar Man dazed in the middle of the ring. DiBiase has promised that he will use all of his substantial resources to end Virgil . . . The Sandman appears to have gained the upper hand on his former partner Jimmy Snuka sending him out of the area on a stretcher. Snuka was taken to Hospital and was kept overnight for observation . . .The Road Warriors got a few short minutes in the ring with the Nikita Breznikov but Foreign Legion left with the upper hand after a post match beat down . . .Dominating victory for the World Champion tonight.
