content.usatoday.com/communities/entertainment/post/2012/02/chris-christie-criticized-for-whitney-houston-flag-plan/1#.Tz0yUeSrHQINew Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is under fire for his decision to fly flags on state government buildings at half-staff Saturday when Whitney Houston's funeral takes place in Newark. _________________________________________________________ Hearing a lot of military people upset with this. Is lowering the flag for the death of a celebrity appropriate when it's the highest of all honors for our military? Or is there nothing wrong with this, and a star of her caliber is deserving of having our flag lowered for her funeral? ...tough one fans.

This one is not a Tough One at all, it's a smack in the face to our Military and no matter how big of a Celebrity someone was should not have that honor. I love how people are wanting the media not to talk about her troubles and just the positives. I'm not sorry to say this, but everything we do in life makes us who we are and that's something you can't change. Anyway, if they want to lower the flags to half-staff thats their call and they'll live with the criticism or praise for doing something not done outside our Military...

Is this how pathetic our nation has become?

It's not because she's a celebrity. They didn't lower the flag when Michael Jackson died and he was a bigger celebrity.
It looks to me like it's because of how her rendition of the National Anthem at SuperBowl XXV is remembered and respected.
Now, I definitely think it's a bit over-the-top but for someone who has sung the National Anthem better than just about anyone ever, I don't have a big problem with it.
I can understand people being upset about it, though.

Yay. Let's all wear arm bands for the crack addict. When most people die, it's sad but not to quote Miz but "Really?? Really??" It's tragic she was a crack head but unless you're an immediate family member or close friend, lay off the waterworks. Crackheads die early, That's one of the hazards of being a crack head.

I think that the NJ Gov attempted to capitalize on Whitney's popularity with our military thank to her SB National Anthem, and it back-fired on him horribly.
Drug abuse aside, she was a celebrity, and most importantly not US military. To have the flag lowered for our fallen military comes with the highest of honors. I believe this was nothing more than a popularity stunt gone wrong. No SB anthem, no lowering of the flag.

Apparently, this isn't the first time Gov. Christie has the flown the flag at half-mast for a musician.
According to the Governor, the flag will be lowered in memory of a “daughter of New Jersey,” just as it was for New Jersey resident Clarence Clemons, former member of Bruce Springsteen's band
Methinks it does have more to do with her celebrity status than just her national anthem singing.

According to the United States Code Title 4 Chapter 1 – The Flag, as found at www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagcode.htm, the requirements for lowering the flag to half staff are clear: “By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving on active duty, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff, and the same authority is provided to the Mayor of the District of Columbia with respect to present or former officials of the District of Columbia and members of the Armed Forces from the District of Columbia. The flag shall be flown at half-staff 30 days from the death of the President or a former President; 10 days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress.” Whitney Houston. Clarence Clemons. Macho Man Randy Savage or whoever the deceased entertainer may be .... DO NOT QUALIFY!

i just was on facebook for a local news channel and people were ranting about this. i wrote yeah, military and police serve the public....but we don't know what those people do in their personal life either. there's sure a lot of online ranting about Houston. it occured to me last night people only seem to be mad at certain celebrities. Johnny Cash was addicted, Eric Clapton, Glen Campbell. A whole bunch of country singers. Only difference...they got clean before they died. Hey they renamed the street that runs in front of Graceland 'Elvis Presley BLVD". was that wrong? Hey look what we know about JFK! look at all the stuff named after him. Is that good or bad?

If I were governor I would certainly follow this guideline because it simply makes the most sense but state level politicians can do as they please at the state level.
