The first Olympics for which there are records dates all the way back to 776 BC! This infographic looks at some of the events played by the ancients. I'd love to see the return of old school Pankration. Ancient Olympics, by Adolfo Arranz

I would love to see pankration or MMA in the Olympics as well. When did Pankration get dropped out of the olympics? Probably the same time that the stupid horse dancing came into the Olympics.

I would love to see pankration or MMA in the Olympics as well. When did Pankration get dropped out of the olympics? It was a victim of time. Pankration was said to be among the most popular events during the initial Golden Era of the Olympics. By the time the games were brought back 1500 years later, the art had long since faded from the mainstream of society. There was a movement to have it included in the '04 Olympics in Athens as an exhibition sport, but it fell victim to politics. The old History Channel series, Human Weapon, once ran a feature on Pankration. As exhibited below, a credible argument can be made that it was an early forerunner to what is now known as Mixed Martial Arts.

I would agree that Pankration definitely has a bit of MMA feel to it. It was the original mixture of a bit of everything including boxing and wrestling.
