Card 441 – June 24, 2011
Memorial Coliseum, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
Good day, eh! The NWF once again invades the Great White North with a loaded show for our Canadian fans. New tag champs Red Pepper will face the Fabulous Kangaroos in singles matches, Bob Orton, Jr. makes his return to the ring, Magnum T.A. faces his biggest test so far in the Masked Superstar and there’s a Triple Threat tag bout featuring the Armstrong brothers, Hennigs, and Cornette duo. Your main event will see NWF Champion Steve Williams defend against top ranked Geeto Mongol in a contest Sir Oliver Humperdink considers a key in ending the career of Dr. Death! Let’s get to the action…
Terry Gordy & Sir Oliver Humperdink b Ted DiBiase & Larry Sharpe
In his final NWF match, “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe teamed with 7-time NWF Champion and meal ticket DiBiase to take on Gordy & Humperdink. Eddie Gilbert, who will take over the contracts of all Monster Factory wrestlers effective July 1st, was at ringside to observe. Sharpe did his best to stay out of the ring and let DiBiase do all the work. Match was fairly even until DiBiase took a Piledriver from Gordy. Humperdink quickly tagged in and, while Gordy kept referee Paddy Grimes busy, nailed Ted with brass knuckles! Humperdink plopped on an unconscious DiBiase and got the pin. Sharpe was on his cell phone during the pinfall (reportedly with his stockbroker) and made no effort to break things up. Gilbert was shaking his head, perhaps wondering what he had gotten himself into.
Pepper Gomez b Roy Heffernan
Next week will see the huge rematch between the Kangaroos and Red Pepper for the tag titles. This week all four men involved met in singles action. After a slow start, Gomez took control of the bout. He systematically wore Heffernan down and got the win after a criss cross smash. It was Heffernan’s first loss in singles this year. The match got heated a few of times, but nothing beyond some pushing and shoving.
Crusader #2 b Bepo Mongol
Crusader #2 was having a rough time in singles competition this year until scoring a win over big Bepo a couple of weeks ago. This Crusader seems to be a big favorite of the Canadian fans and had a lot of support behind him. The mammoth Croatian started fast, pounding on the masked man and tallying a few pin attempts. The Crusader mounted a huge comeback as the big man’s cardio started to fade in this excellent contest. Still, late in the bout Bepo escaped both a Sleeper and Figure 4 attempt before the Sleeper finally got locked on and did him in.
Red Bastien b Al Costello
The second of two singles bouts involving the Kangaroos and Red Pepper started off as a scientific encounter, but broke down when Costello kept getting reversed. Heffernan ran to the ring and was able to break up a pin attempt by Bastien, allowing Costello to attack from behind. The Aussie dominated the rest of the contest, bloodying Red in the process. Out of nowhere, a weary Bastien caught Costello in the Atomic Drop and got the three count! Both Kangaroos were stunned and began putting the boot to Red. Luckily, Pepper Gomez was on the spot right away swinging a steel chair that chased the former champions from the ring.
Bob Roop & Bob Orton, Jr. b Ivan Koloff & Boris Zhukov
Orton, making his long awaited return from injury, got a big hand from the fans during ring introductions. The Russians, who were responsible for Orton’s injury had both Larry Sharpe (clearly hurting from his earlier bout) and Eddie Gilbert with them. This was a great match, with Orton getting some early revenge on Koloff, then both sides hitting all their big moves. Finish saw Roop use the Shoulder Breaker on Koloff to pick up the win. Once again Sharpe was on his phone most of the bout and was of little help to his team. Gilbert, who quietly sat in a chair and observed the entire time, did not seem happy.
Harley Race b “Playboy” Buddy Rose
In late April, these two went to a draw and Rose hasn’t let Harley live it down. Rose had yet to be pinned in singles since his return to the area, and was fired up for this rematch. Although Rose proved tough to beat, Race eventually got the win with after a Piledriver.
Masked Superstar b Magnum T.A.
In his toughest test to date, young phenom Magnum faced off against the big masked man. Both were unbeaten in 2011, sporting a combined 14-0 record for the year. Great job by both wrestlers in avoiding the other’s finishing holds. Every time Magnum tried for the Belly to Belly, Superstar would either counter. Whenever Superstar would go for the Cobra or Neckbreaker, Magnum would block or escape. This was an exciting encounter that went bad at the end. Frustrated with his inability to put Magnum away, Superstar delivered a loaded headbutt that almost knocked the youngster out cold. He followed with the Superstar clothesline to pick up a tainted win. Magnum was furious when he realized what happened. As Superstar was strutting around the ring gloating, Magnum came up from behind and buried the big man with a thunderous Belly to Belly Suplex which had the crowd cheering.
Brad & Brian Armstrong dq Larry & Curt Hennig and Kip Cornette & Dennis Condrey
This was a three team scramble with the first fall deciding the winner of the contest. The long feud between the Armstrong family and Jim Cornette is well documented. The Hennigs have also made enemies of the other camps after a recent attack on Bob Armstrong and the issues between Heenan and Cornette of late. Match started with a six man brawl before things finally settled into some kind of order. Hennigs took some punishment early and were in the ring without a breather for some time. Teams traded moves and things were fairly even until all hell broke loose when Brian Armstrong and Kip Cornette finally squared off. The two were brawling everywhere with referee Izzy Moidel trying to keep up with the action. All six men were outside the ring when “Bullet” Bob Armstrong came out of the crowd and jumped Larry “The Axe” Hennig! Moidel didn’t see that, but see Kip smash Brian with the ring bell and signaled for a disqualification. After the bell, Bullet Bob challenged The Axe to a match next week in Johnstown.
NWF Championship: STEVE WILLIAMS b Geeto Mongol
Although some pundits dismissed Geeto as a legitimate contender, Humperdink’s savage Mongol had put together an impressive 7-1-1 singles record in 2011 heading into the title match. Humperdink was very animated and has vowed to end Williams’ career within the next year. Although Geeto made this a close match, in the end the raw power of Williams was just too much to handle. After a Doctor Bomb, Williams used the Oklahoma Stampede to get the win and send Humperdink into a fit of rage. At one point, Humperdink even gave Geeto a hard slap in the face which did not seem to sit well with the big Croatian.
Another great show is in the books, ending with a big win for Williams. Next week we’ll be in Johnstown, PA for what looks to be a wild card. Here’s the current lineup:
* After the wild finish in tonight’s Triple Threat tag-team contest, Bob Armstrong and Larry Hennig have signed for a one-on-one confrontation next week! Commissioner Cornette quickly declared that no one would be allowed at ringside for the bout, which again has put him at odds with Bobby Heenan. Look for some fireworks in this one!
* Once again the Crusaders and Mongols will clash in a tag-team bout! Both sides seem evenly matched, but will Geeto’s loss this week and Humperdink’s preoccupation with Steve Williams hurt the Croatians’ chances? We’ll see if the masked Crusaders use their speed and aerial skills to get the win at the War Memorial Arena!
* The unexpected feud between Jim Cornette and Bobby Heenan will continue on Friday night when the Midnight Express tackle North American Champion Buddy Rogers and Curt Hennig! With Commissioner Cornette naming Bobby Eaton the top contender for Rogers’ title, this one could get out of hand quickly!
* Eddie Gilbert will lead his Hot Stuff International stable into combat for the first time next week! It won’t be a cakewalk as Ivan Koloff will step into the ring against Bob Orton, Jr. who is looking to avenge the injury he suffered! Both Ted DiBiase and Boris Zhukov are also scheduled for singles matches.
* Brian Armstrong and Kip James will meet in singles action next week! Both men have talked about signing for a series of special stipulation matches that will ultimately culminate at SUMMER SHOWDOWN in August. As this may be their last match under traditional rules, both would love to get the win and carry that momentum forward!
* Your big main event will see a return bout for the NWF Tag-Team Championship! Red Bastien & Pepper Gomez will attempt to retain their newly won gold against the most dominant team in NWF history, the Fabulous Kangaroos! Will this be a return to the top for the former champs, or the dawning of a new era in the tag-team division? If this is anything like their last match, the fans in Johnstown will be in for a real treat!
We’ll see you next week in Johnstown!
