Card #447 – 08/05/2011 Akron Armory, Akron, OH
Next Saturday will be the 8th annual SUMMER SHOWDOWN at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, and tonight’s show in Akron will showcase much of the talent involved in that show. It’s an all important chance for everyone to strut their stuff and gain some momentum before the spectacular! No titles are on the line so we’ll skip the lineup introduction and get straight to the action…
Brad Armstrong b Rocky Tomayo Tomayo was making his first appearance in NWF rings, and did nothing to impress the Akron crowd. Brad was able to easily outmaneuver him and eventually got the pin after a Russian Legsweep.
Crusaders cor Texas Hangmen With his Mongols currently in the tag title hunt (and perhaps trying to give them some time off before SUMMER SHOWDOWN) , Sir Oliver Humperdink bought himself some hired guns in the Psycho & Killer, the Texas Hangmen. Humperdink came to the ring to introduce the team, but then left to attend to other business. The Crusaders didn’t seem flustered at all. The big newcomers showed some flashes of potential, but were outclassed by the Crusaders. Although this match went on for a while, the Hangmen could not sustain any offensive threat. In the end, frustration got the best of them and they just bailed out of the ring and walked out on the match.
Bob Armstrong cor “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey Next week in Cleveland, Bob and son Brad will continue the epic Armstrong vs. Cornette feud that will likely never be completely settled, facing the Midnight Express. This was Condrey’s first match back after being injured during the bout on July 1st that resulted in the Hennigs being suspended. This one turned into a donnybrook, with both men bloodied during the hard-hitting action. Late in the bout, referee Bucky Palermo ordered Jim Cornette to return to the locker room after numerous attempts at interference. While Cornette was pleading his case with Palermo, Bobby Heenan showed up and jumped on Cornette from behind. Condrey left the ring to help his manager and, in the melee, was counted out. Armstrong seemed quite content to watch the two managers flail away at one another from the ring.
“Playboy” Buddy Rose b Pepper Gomez Gomez and Rose will be part of the first ever three-team Battlezone Match at SS8 next week. Rose made the Top 10 Rankings for July for the first time since his return in April, and this may have been his most impressive singles performance of the year. The Playboy worked Pepper’s leg and wound up getting the win with a half Boston Crab.
Bob Orton, Jr. ddq Ted DiBiase These two will meet in tag-team action at SS8 and after a short time exchanging holds the match fell apart. Big John Studd got involved, the Bob Roop retaliated. All four wound up in the ring throwing haymakers and referee Mark Curtis called for the bell while trying to escape with his life. Look for further fallout when Roop and Studd square off later tonight.
Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens b “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers & Bobby Heenan We had three more competitors in the upcoming Battlezone Match in this contest. It was only the second time Bockwinkel & Stevens, former tag champs, had teamed since Stevens’ return. As expected, Heenan only tagged in when the opponents were in trouble, hammering both with a foreign object. Rogers was the workhorse, and began to tire as the match wore on. After several near falls on both sides in this exciting bout, Bockwinkel locked his own version of Rogers’ signature Figure 4 on a weary North American Champion to get the win. Heenan attempted to break it up, but Stevens grabbed the wily manager and rolled him to the Armory floor. Bockwinkel also handed Rogers his only singles loss by pinfall, way back on January 14th in Uniontown, PA.
Bob Roop b Big John Studd Earlier in the night, these grapplers wound up in the ring slugging it out alongside their SS8 tag partners in the double disqualification between Orton and DiBiase. Studd came into the bout without having suffered a pinfall or submission loss all year. A few minutes into the bout DiBiase saved his partner, but Orton came out from the locker room and chased him away. Good show of strength by both men, but it was an amazing gut wrench suplex by Roop that put Studd’s shoulders down for a three count for the first time in 2011.
Brian Armstrrong b Kip Cornette (Singapore Cane Match) Someday soon we’ll go back to calling this weapon a kendo stick, as the Singapore Cane reference is a bit stale. However, it does sound exotic, so that’s what we’re going with for now! Kip started fast, but things turned around once the Canes came into play. Although this was a longer match, it was mostly Armstrong beating on his former partner. Cornette saved his “brother” twice before being chased from ringside by arch-nemesis “Bullet” Bob Armstrong. That gave Brian the opening he needed. He used a home run swing to the back of Kip’s head, then swung him into a DDT for the win. Midnight Express and Cornette hit the ring after the bell, but so did Bob and Brad and it turned into a lengthy pier six brawl that spilled into the crowd and all over the Armory. Kip was busted up pretty bad, which does not bode well for the Alley Fight against Brian at SUMMER SHOWDOWN.
Steve Williams & Magnum T.A. b Masked Superstar & Terry Gordy It’s rare to see cooperation between managers (although technically Gilbert’s position is CEO) but the House of Humperdink and Hot Stuff International joined forces in this preview of two SS8 singles matches. Doc dared Superstar to start the match but, after a couple false starts, it was Gordy. Very fast-paced encounter with high impact moves all around. Humperdink and Gilbert seemed concerned only about their own man as the match wore on. After a missed splash, Magnum got worked over by Superstar. Once Magnum made the tag, Superstar tagged Gordy immediately. Gordy did well, but was on his own since Superstar was unwilling to reenter the ring. Magnum was fired up and got the pin, nailing Gordy with a hard running forearm and cover. Gordy had some harsh words for Superstar and Gilbert after the match.
It was a crazy night of action that really set the table for the great lineup at SUMMER SHOWDOWN in Cleveland next Saturday! Take a deep breath and get ready – we’ll see you at Municipal Stadium next week!
Final SUMMER SHOWDOWN match listing: • Bob & Brad Armstrong vs. Beautiful Bobby & Loverboy Dennis, the Midnight Express • Magnum T.A. vs. Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy • Bob Roop & Bob Orton, Jr. vs. Ted DiBiase & Big John Studd • Brian Armstrong vs. Kip Cornette under Alley Fight rules in their final confrontation • The Crusaders vs. Geeto & Bepo, the Mongols • Masked Superstar defends the NWF Championship against the former champ Steve “Doctor Death” Williams • The first-ever Battlezone between Team Race (Harley Race & Red Pepper), Team Bockwinkel (Nick Bockwinkel & the Blonde Bombers) and the Heenan Family (“Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, Larry & Curt Hennig)

Tim, it's been 'next Saturday' for nearly a year lol. I'd really like to know if Dr. Death got his strap back or not.

Tim, it's been 'next Saturday' for nearly a year lol. I'd really like to know if Dr. Death got his strap back or not. The Gordy and Magnum match had a 9-month time limit and they went to a Broadway. Really slowed my progress. Should actually have this posted in the next week or two. Had to pull a bunch of my notes together about the matches, which were rolled at various times. And thanks for remembering!

Card #448 – August 13, 2011 SUMMER SHOWDOWN Municipal Stadium, Cleveland, OH
Welcome to the 8th annual SUMMER SHOWDOWN here at Municipal Stadium, the home of the Cleveland Indians and, for purposes of this promotion, their politically incorrect mascot Chief Wahoo! Threatening weather has cleared, and it should be a beautiful day for the NWF’s only outdoor show of the year.
Before this historic card began, there was a “lottery” of sorts to determine the entry order for each team in the Battlezone Match, followed by a quick game of rock-paper-scissors to see which two teams would start. Order of entry for Team Race will be – Pepper Gomez, Red Bastien, Harley Race. Team Bockwinkel – Nick Bockwinkel, Ray Stevens, Buddy Rose. Heenan Family – Larry Hennig, Buddy Rogers, Curt Hennig. Pepper Gomez and “The Axe” will kick things off, with Nick Bockwinkel meeting the winner. Members of the three teams will then rotate until two teams have been completely eliminated. And with that decided, let’s get to the action…
Midnight Express b Bob & Brad Armstrong The continuing Armstrong – Cornette feud opens the show. Surprisingly, these two teams have never met at SUMMER SHOWDOWN, although they have been a staple on big shows since 2008. Fast paced action, with Bullet Bob taking some early punishment from double-team moves. Armstrongs came back and did some damage to Condrey, who was still showing a little “ring rust” having just returned from injury. Lots of back and forth followed, with some Cornette interference followed by a Rocket Launcher on Brad for the pin. This was Bob & Brad’s first loss by pinfall all year. Bob chased a wailing Cornette around the ring and into the dugout after the match.
Terry Gordy cor Magnum T.A. Since his debut in mid-April, Magnum has set the area on fire. His only singles loss thus far has been to current NWF Champion Masked Superstar. Gordy has spent much of the year locked in a three way battle with Steve Williams and Ted DiBiase. Gordy won the NWF Title for the first time here in Cleveland back in February, but held the gold for only three weeks. Just seven short days ago, Magnum pinned Gordy during a tag-team match in Akron, a result that both Gordy and Sir Oliver Humperdink have declared a fluke. This was a hard-hitting encounter from the opening bell. Gordy ambushed Magnum to get the early advantage, but it didn’t last. Magnum got a couple near falls using some top rope offense, but it turned into a brawl. Gordy used a powerbomb outside the ring and Humperdink whacked Magnum in the leg with his cane to give Bamm Bamm a tainted countout victory. Magnum wasn’t happy with the result and planted a big right hand squarely on Humperdink’s chin that left the rotund manager rolling in the infield dirt.
Bob Roop & Bob Orton, Jr. b Ted DiBiase & Big John Studd Although Hot Stuff International’s team looks imposing, it was clear they were going to have their hands full tonight. Roop & Orton had not lost a contest since mid-January and almost won this match in the opening moments with a quick roll up on DiBiase. Very good match with all four showing off some big moves. Finish was an impressive display as Orton (with an assist from Roop) was able to superplex Studd and get the pin. When Studd hit the canvas the crowd came out of their seats, cheering as if Rocky Colavito just hit a game winning homer in the bottom of the 9th.
Brian Armstrong b Kip Cornette (Final Confrontation - Alley Fight) Utter carnage was expected, and that’s exactly what happened. Both combatants came to the ring in street clothes, Kip accompanied by Jim Cornette and Brian accompanied by his father. Kip looked ready and seemed to have recovered from last week’s brutal Singapore Cane Match. After months of animosity and bloodshed, the bell sounded for this final confrontation. After a couple of exchanges, the action spilled out of the ring. Brian scored a surprisingly quick first fall after repeatedly whipping Kip with his belt. The momentum went back and forth, with Kip surviving a piledriver on the concrete floor thanks to some timely interference by his “brother” Jim. A distraction allowed a bloody Kip to stun Brian with a clothesline to even up the falls. Kip soon followed up with a piledriver for another fall and put himself in the driver’s seat. Brian was barely able to continue, and when Bullet Bob blocked some further interference by Jim Cornette, he snatched Kip into a DDT and got the three count. At this point, both men were bloodied and weary, but managed to continue the bout. Kip caught Brian in a powerslam coming off the ropes to score the next fall, but Brian pulled himself up using the ropes as the match continued. Looking to the crowd for support, Brian managed to fire up, adding a little showmanship in taking the next fall with his Shake, Rattle & Roll kneedrop. The youngest Armstrong was spent, and was clearly hoping this would be the end of the match. Kip wasn’t going to make it to his feet, but got a late push (literally) from Jim Cornette. Next fall was a back and forth slugfest, with both men looking exhausted and moving slowly. When Brian ducked a haymaker, Kip’s momentum turned him around and Brian used the remaining energy he had to use a Pump Handle Slam for the first time in the match. Kip was pinned and out of it. Jim Cornette was screaming “get up!” over and over, but it was no use. Brian struggled to get to his feet and made it just before the 30 second rest period expired to win this grueling battle.
Crusaders dq Mongols The beginnings of this feud go back to late April, and the intensity of the confrontation between these duos has increased every week. The masked Crusaders were attacked from behind while on their way to the ring by the Mongols and Sir Oliver Humperdink. Bepo used his chains and destroyed Crusader #2 in the process, leaving him in a heap on the infield grass. Despite Humperdink’s urging, the Crusaders refused to forfeit the match. Crusader #1 was easy pickings once the bell sounded. He was worked over by both Croatian monsters, but kept kicking out of pin attempts. Just when it looked like hope might be lost, Crusader #2 made it to the ring apron and made the tag! #2 got some licks in, but the damage done earlier began to wear on him. Still, both masked men refused to give in. During a scramble between #1 and Geeto, referee Andy DePaul caught Geeto using a foreign object and disqualified him. A short post-match brawl ensued, but was broken up by a bunch of wrestlers and security before all hell broke loose.
NWF Championship: Steve Williams dq MASKED SUPERSTAR It’s rare that a title match isn’t the main event on a big show, but due to the sheer magnitude of the upcoming Battlezone, Superstar and Doc found themselves as co-main eventers this evening. Eddie Gilbert, the CEO of Hot Stuff International, had his newest signing ready to go. Superstar had said he would prove his title victory was no fluke, although the very nature of his win seemed to contradict that statement. Once the match started, Gilbert was jawing with Williams, allowing Superstar to jump the former champ and gain an early advantage. The match was fairly even until Doc hoisted the big masked man up and planted him with the Oklahoma Stampede. Only Gilbert’s interference, draping Superstar leg on the bottom rope, saved the title. That set Doc off, and the match turned into a brawl. The action spilled outside the ring, with Williams getting the better of things. He got on the ring apron and attempted a diving smash, but Superstar plastered him with a chair in plain sight of referee Bucky Palermo. The infraction led to an immediate disqualification, bringing the match to a disappointing conclusion. The double tough Williams quickly shook off the blow, but found Gilbert and Superstar had were already on the run to the dugout.
Heenan Family b Team Race and Team Bockwinkel (Battlezone Match) Before this unprecedented match began, Commissioner Cornette made and appearance noting that only the competitors would be allowed at ringside during the match and made it clear that if anyone interfered in any bout for any reason, it would result in an immediate fine and suspension. On the surface this seems like a fair stipulation, but boy, was Bobby Heenan ever furious. This seems like just another dig at Heenan by Cornette in the growing rivalry between the two. Petty bickering aside, the nine participants involved have combined for over 30 title reigns in the NWF, a testament to the historic nature of the bout. But the time for talking is done, and the teams are all ready to go. Match #1 is in the ring, so let the Battlezone begin! Match #1 – Larry Hennig b Pepper Gomez Good match with momentum swinging several times. After near falls for both wrestlers, Hennig got the win with a bodyslam and handful of tights. Match #2 – Nick Bockwinkel b Larry Hennig Another good matchup, with Bockwinkel overcoming some early mistakes and winning with the Bockwinkel Sleeper. Match #3 – Nick Bockwinkel b Red Bastien Bastien put up a great fight, nearly getting the win with an Atomic Drop early on. Bockwinkel came back and after some traded moves, won with the Figure 4 Leglock. Match #4 – Buddy Rogers b Nick Bockwinkel Bockwinkel had slowed a little after two tough matchups. Rogers took advantage, continually cheating and using the ropes for leverage on nearly every pin attempt. Finally the “Nature Boy” locked in the Figure 4 Grapevine and Bockwinkel had nowhere to go. Match #5 – Buddy Rogers b Ray Stevens Fantastic bout! Action inside and outside of the ring. Very fast paced. Stevens used a double underhook suplex to get a very near fall. Rogers locked in the Figure 4, but Stevens made the ropes. Stevens hit the Bombs Away, but again Rogers just barely kicked out. Finish saw a reversal off the ropes and Rogers use a piledriver to get the win. Match #6 – Buddy Rogers dq Harley Race Rogers was pretty beaten up from last contest and tried to get a breather, but Race jumped in the ring right away and pummeled him with big move after big move. Rogers kept moving to avoid pin attempts and rolled out of the ring on several occasions to try and catch a breath. Race was relentless, but proved to be too relentless. With both men on the infield, Race kept bouncing Rogers’ head off the steel ringpost until the “Nature Boy’s” face was a mess. Referee Mark Curtis was doing his best to give the wrestlers some latitude but, after warning Race twice, had no choice but to call for the disqualification. Harley was not happy with the decision, but had only himself to blame. Match #7 – “Playboy” Buddy Rose b Buddy Rogers The Playboy didn’t hesitate, taking advantage of the bloody and battered Rogers. Rose took a move from the Rogers’ playbook, clipping the knee and locking in a half Boston Crab within a couple of minutes. Rogers didn’t technically submit, but appeared to pass out and was ruled unable to continue by Mark Curtis, bringing the Battlezone to its final matchup. Match #8 – Curt Hennig b “Playboy” Buddy Rose Hennig came out thinking this would be an easy win, but boy was he shocked. A really intense and evenly fought bout. Lots of fighting outside the ring that saw referee Mark Curtis again giving each competitor some leeway. Both scored near falls with their finishers, but after a long period of exchanging moves, Curt caught a leg and used the Hennig-Plex to win the first ever Battlezone for the Heenan Family.
While the partisan crowd may not have been happy with the end result of the Battlezone, they seemed content to have been part of a historic confrontation. There is some question about North American champ Rogers’ next challenger now, as Bockwinkel pinned the champ in the tag match in Akron, but Buddy Rose pinned him in the Battlezone. More to come on that for sure! Should next week ever come, we’ll be at Chad Olson’s favorite NWF venue - the beautiful Floral Hall in Dunkirk, NY! No titles will be on the line, but expect plenty of action related to fallout from SUMMER SHOWDOWN!
