Been reading through your old results here and along with Booker Bill's stuff, this has been a favorite LWF fed of mine and while a decade old, I agree with everything said here. Ideally I'd love to book my feds as if I were an actual booker/promoter running a territory, but because, as you said "the dice don't care", I often default to the idea that when it comes to the game, its all a shoot and so end up booking things more as someone might if it were a legit combat sport rather than a work. I recall seeing house rules for adding pushes to the game to give things more of a 'worked' feel and the more I think about it, the more I think some sort of supplental ruleset for adding pushes to would be really cool. I realize adding that sort of thing would potentially fundamentally alter the way the game plays, but it would allow promoters a greater degree of control over how things played out in their fed on terms of booking programs and whatnot if they chose to incorporate such a ruleset into their fed. Thanks for reading. I put a lot of work into the NWF over the years. To clarify, I've always booked like it's legit sport and not worked. I like to think of my booking style as having a 70s to early 80s flavor. Wins and losses matter. Being the champ is a big deal, and you don't get title shots if you don't win. Depending on what you have in mind for supplemental rules for pushes, my knee-jerk reaction is that it would reduce your control, not enhance it. I don't like having to follow charts or rules when it comes to the booking aspect of the game. I enjoy the challenge of creatively booking your way out of situations you didn't want or expect. And I also like it when a "push" happens naturally after a couple of upset wins. I also understand that other promoters probably don't enjoy either of those situations at all. I agree that adding rules and/or potentially unnecessary charts to the game for pushes could potentially negatively impact the way the game plays and handcuff a promoter's freedom as a booker, especially considering the game mechanics are so elegantly simple that it doesnt take very much tinkering to almost entierly alter and in some cases, unbalance the game. I have no idea how to go about adding a more worked feel to the game through rules for Wrestler Pushes. I imagine you could go about such a thing in a variety of different ways and it'd be something I'd need to really sit down and think about. At the very least, it'd be interesting to see done and maybe a fun experiment to test out such a ruleset, but like you, and very likely most promoters, I prize freedom as a promoter over almost everything else so I'm not sure I'd use such a ruleset for any ongoing fed I were running. Like you, I dig the fact that the game plays as thpugh pro-wres is a shoot, though it can be difficult sometimes to not book or view things as a work since in the real world, thats how things are done and in modern wrestling, its openly worked unlike in the territory days where kayfabe ruled the land. I've always lamented the fact that being born in 83, I just missed pro-wres' heyday.I may of grew up watching during a time when the business was as hot as its ever been, but by that point it entirely lacked that air of being a legit sport, though ECW was able to keep that line blurred somewhat. I wish I could experience pro-wres tje way a lot of you guys got to in the 70's and early 80's. Unfortunately, its something Ill never get to know.

Card #445 – July 22, 2011 Stambaugh Auditorium, Youngstown, OH
We’ve got a fantastic show lined up at the Auditorium tonight including feuding managers Jim Cornette and Bobby Heenan on opposite sides of a tag-team encounter, John Studd facing Bob Orton, Jr., the Blonde Bombers against Harley Race & S.D. Jones, a Taped Fist Match between Brian Armstrong and Kip Cornette and Red Pepper defending the tag belts against the savage Mongols! Let’s get to the action…
Brad Armstrong b Danny Doring Brad dominated the tag match between the Armstrongs and Doring & Roadkill last week. This week Doring put up a bit of a fight, but Brad finished him with the Russian Leg Sweep.
Buddy Rogers & Bobby Heenan b Bobby Eaton & Jim Cornette The tension between former cohorts Jim Cornette and Bobby Heenan seems to be getting worse by the week. This week both managers don the tights to team with the competitors in next week’s North American Title match. With “Loverboy” Dennis injured, and the Hennigs serving a suspension, the likelihood of outside interference seemed greatly reduced. The bout saw Cornette use his tennis racquet to inflict some pain on Rogers, but the Nature Boy eventually came back to get the win using the Figure 4 Grapevine on Eaton. Cornette threw in the towel for Eaton quickly, not wanting the hold to do any lasting damage with the title match upcoming. The managers only faced off briefly, and tore into one another pretty well.
Terry Gordy b Phil Davis Sir Oliver Humperdink says Gordy is on a roll and will be the man to end the career of former NWF Champ Steve Williams. Gordy didn’t disappoint his manager, dominating Fabulous Phil before winning with a back suplex.
Bob Roop b Johnny Rodz Former NWF Champion Roop, perhaps frustrated with last week’s controversial DQ loss to Terry Gordy, showed his aggressive side and put away Rodz with relative ease. Roop used the Shoulder Breaker for the pinfall.
Nick Bockwinkel b Crusader #2 Bockwinkel had put together a good year and came into this contest having won four straight and ranked #2 on the contender list. Two weeks earlier, a close decision over Crusader #1 led to this bout. Bockwinkel was able to control the early stages, but the Crusader hung in and came back strong, gaining numerous near falls. After wrestling by the rules all night long, Bockwinkel got desperate and resorted to some of his dirty tricks to regain the advantage. He got the win after choking #2 on the ropes and rolling him up.
Ray Stevens & Playboy Buddy Rose b Harley Race & S.D. Jones Race has been having a tough time with the Blonde Bombers of late and, with his regular allies Red Pepper busy defending the tag titles, he asked S.D. Jones for some help. Philadelphia’s favorite son was happy to oblige, especially after suffering a loss to the duo last week. Race and Jones nearly had the bout won several times, but in the end the Bombers were able to isolate Jones and get him in trouble. Stevens came off the top with a crossbody to get the win.
Big John Studd dq Bob Orton, Jr. Orton has looked good since his return from injury, and Studd entered the match having not suffered a pinfall loss all year. Things started quickly, but Studd used his strength to take control. After a referee distraction from a very active Eddie Gilbert, Studd hoisted Orton into the Backbreaker. Bob Roop hit the ring and attacked Studd from behind, saving his partner but resulting in a disqualification.
Brian Armstrong b Kip Cornette (Taped Fist Match) Armstrong was feeling a little bit of pressure after losing the first two matches in this series to his former tag partner. Kip started quickly, but Armstrong’s tenacity and hard-hitting style helped him turn the tables. After a good back and forth exchange, Armstrong took over and pounded on Kip, finally scoring the knockout blow and getting the victory in a bloody brawl.
NWF Tag-Team Championship: Geeto & Bepo Mongol dq RED PEPPER The tag titles had only changed hands in Youngstown once before (Larry & Curt Hennig defeating Yukon Eric & Danny Hodge in 2007) but, after two long and grueling contests with the Fabulous Kangaroos to secure the tag titles, some experts thought Red Pepper was due for a letdown. The champs did start off flat, and it looked like the fans in Youngstown might see their second tag title change. Gomez was being double-teamed by the savage Croatians, but when the chips were down, Bastien came through in a big way. He made the hot tag then held his own against both Mongols, giving Pepper a chance to recover. The champs got huge Bepo off his feet and were able to work him over and would have won the match several times had it not been for interference by Geeto and Sir Oliver Humperdink. Referee Paddy Grimes had a rough night, always being distracted by Humperdink or one of the challengers. Using a bevy of illegal tactics to gain the upper hand, the Mongols took command and had the champs in a bad way. During a free for all on the arena floor, it looked like the challengers would pull off a horrible miscarriage of justice when Bepo went to grab his chains. From out of nowhere the Crusaders showed up and grabbed the chains first! They did a double clothesline with the chains on both of the Mongols, causing a disqualification. The masked men chased after Humperdink as well, but the terrified manager showed uncanny speed running to the locker room. Red Pepper appreciated the help from their friends, and promised the fans they would be better prepared when these teams meet again.
Another lively evening of matches in Youngstown! Next week the NWF moves to the Fieldhouse in Erie, PA as we edge closer to SUMMER SHOWDOWN in Cleveland! Here’s the current lineup:
• Harley Race had some trouble with the Blonde Bombers tonight, but hopes that his luck will change next week when he faces Ray Stevens one-on-one!
• Bob Roop & Bob Orton, Jr. have been doing some double duty recently, battling both the House of Humperdink and Hot Stuff International. Next week they face the unusual duo of Sir Oliver Humperdink and big Terry Gordy!
• The Brian Armstrong and Kip Cornette wars continue next week! This time the two will meet in an Erie Street Fight! Dress in your street clothes and throw out the rulebook! Also, expect the stipulation for their final confrontation at SUMMER SHOWDOWN to be revealed shortly! • The Masked Superstar, new NWF Champion, will team with Big John Studd to face former champ Steve Williams & phenom Magnum T.A. in Erie! When these teams last met it turned into a wild brawl. With tensions running high between Superstar and Doc, you can expect more of the same next week!
• Your big main event will see “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton, the man Commissioner Jim Cornette calls the rightful North American Champion, face the actual North American Champion – “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers! In their last encounter, Eaton walked away with the victory, but not the title. Which of these competitors will walk out of the Fieldhouse with the championship next week?
We’ll see you in just seven days in Erie!

So great to see an NWF show. I loved the visual of Sir Oliver Humperdink running away from Red Pepper. The Brian Armstrong vs. Kip Cornette taped fist bout was a standout as was Ray Stevens & Buddy Rose beating Harley Race & S.D. Jones. I also really enjoyed Buddy Rogers & Bobby Heenan beating Bobby Eaton & Jim Cornette especially the finish.

*** NWF BREAKING NEWS ***
Unprecedented Match at SUMMER SHOWDOWN! For the first time in NWF history, three teams of three wrestlers will compete against one another in a gauntlet style of singles matches! Team leaders Harley Race, Nick Bockwinkel and Bobby Heenan were all on hand to announce the first ever “ Battlezone Match” which has been signed for SUMMER SHOWDOWN. Basically, one man from two of the teams will face one another in a singles match. The loser is eliminated and the winner immediately faces a member from the third team. The teams rotate entrants until two of the teams have been completely eliminated. The order of entry is determined by each team leader. Team Race will also include Red Bastien & Pepper Gomez. Team Bockwinkel will include Ray Stevens & “Playboy” Buddy Rose. The Heenan Family will be “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers and Larry & Curt Hennig. This will undoubtedly be a grueling challenge of skill and endurance that has never been seen before! In what has almost become a staple on NWF supercards, the Armstrong family will face off against Jim Cornette! This time, Bob & Brad Armstrong will tackle Cornette’s Midnight Express, “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis! Expect another very entertaining and very intense bout in this long-running feud! Speaking of the Armstrongs and Cornette, the stipulation for the final singles contest between Brian Armstrong and Kip Cornette has been agreed upon. The two will meet in an “Alley Fight” to put an end to this feud. The match is a multiple fall, no rules style bout that continues until one wrestler cannot answer a 10 count after a fall has occurred. This type of extremely violent match has only been sanctioned twice before (Race/Bockwinkel in 2003 and Race/Sheik in 2009). Expect a bloodbath, as each participant has vowed to do whatever it takes to get the win in this brutal confrontation.

I am so upset that I didn't see the preorder went live for these tickets, but fortunately I was still able to grab a single seat. It's not even obstructed view. Well worth the price for the first-ever Battlezone Match!

Since I've only run three shows in the last 4 1/2 years, you may want to keep those tickets in a safe place.

Love the Three Way Battlezone announcement! Can't wait to see which team survives. And I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the Outlaws/James Gang feud. Whenever it happens, Summer Showdown will be awesome!

Card #446 – July 29, 2011 Erie Fieldhouse, Erie, PA
The NWF sails in to the Flagship City with another spectacular card on tap just two weeks away from SUMMER SHOWDOWN! Tonight Bob Roop & Bob Orton face the odd pairing of Terry Gordy and manager Sir Oliver Humperdink, the special stipulation battles continue between Brian Armstong and Kip Cornette, NWF champ Masked Superstar teams with Big John Studd against Magnum T.A. and former champ Steve Williams and Buddy Rogers defends the North American Title in a rematch against Beautiful Bobby in the main event! Let’s get to the action…
Heartbreak Express cor Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill The Express were the fan favorites here, but got in early trouble. It looked like Roadkill would get the pin on Fabulous Phil, but Sean intervened. He got both Doring & Roadkill involved in a chase around the ringside area, then dove back in just before referee Andy DePaul reached a ten count.
“Playboy” Buddy Rose b S.D. Jones Rose had some difficulty with the always scrappy Jones, but finally pinned Philadelphia’s Favorite Son with the Bombs Away Kneedrop.
Nick Bockwinkel b Red Bastien These NWF veterans had split wins in their two previous meetings of 2011 and have met many times over the years. Bastien startled Bockwinkel with an almost immediate near fall and was really pushing the pace. However, a quick distraction by Buddy Rose caused Red to miss a turnbuckle charge, which changed the complexion of the contest. Bockwinkel took control and won with the Sleeper.
Bob Roop & Bob Orton, Jr. ddq Terry Gordy & Sir Oliver Humperdink Roop & Orton have managed to be successful despite battling members of both the House of Humperdink and Hot Stuff International. Fans were hoping Humperdink would take a beating at some point in the match, but things ended quickly when both Orton and Gordy were disqualified for shoving referee Mark Curtis. Roop & Orton are unbeaten in their last six matches.
Harley Race b Ray Stevens The result of last week’s tag match didn’t sit well with Race, leading to this encounter. Race controlled the action and won with a Piledriver as Red Bastien prevented Buddy Rose from interfering.
Pepper Gomez b Geeto Mongol Although they didn’t leave with the belts, the savage Mongols did get a win over the tag champs last week in Akron. While Humperdink’s team will certainly get another title shot after SUMMER SHOWDOWN, this week the spotlight was on Gomez and Geeto, who have each been very successful in singles action this year. Just a great effort by Pepper, who was able to outsmart Geeto the entire match, eventually winning with the Mexican Cradle. Humperdink was at ringside but seemed preoccupied with other thoughts and wasn’t a factor.
Brian Armstrong b Kip Cornette (Erie Street Fight) Ah, the dreaded <fill in city name> Street Fight! There was no doubt this was going to be a wild match filled with all sorts of creative plunder. Before Gary Michael Cappetta could even introduce the participants all hell broke loose. This turned into the match you would expect from two guys hoping to rip the other’s face off. Chairs, lead pipes, ringside steps – you name it! Armstrong took over after getting the best of some exchanges with foreign objects and won with a Pump Handle Slam onto a steel chair. Series is all even 2-2.
Steve Williams & Magnum T.A. b Masked Superstar & Big John Studd When Eddie Gilbert’s duo was introduced, the crowd showered them with boos and threw things at them as they walked to the ring. Clearly, the way Superstar won the NWF Title from Steve Williams did not sit well with the fans in Erie. When Williams and Magnum were introduced, they got a huge ovation. This was an outstanding match. Williams started and got the advantage on Studd. Magnum followed, but wound up getting double-teamed for a while and nearly pinned. He finally made the big tag and Doc absolutely destroyed Superstar which sent the crowd into a frenzy. Superstar was finally able to bail out and tag Studd, who went toe-to-toe with Williams. A well-rested Magnum tagged back and actually buried Studd with a Belly To Belly Suplex, but Superstar made the save. The action continued with Doc and Superstar while Magnum and Studd brawled on the floor. With Gilbert engaged in the action at ringside, Williams hit the Doctor Bomb on Superstar for the pin, and the fans blew the roof off the Fieldhouse.
North American Championship: BUDDY ROGERS b Bobby Eaton Hard to follow that last match, but the growing conflict between Jim Cornette and Bobby Heenan is becoming its own soap opera. Cornette is doing everything in his power to get the North American Title on one of his men. Based on his victory (via disqualification) at their last meeting, Eaton has been touted by his manager as the “rightful champion,” which has the Heenan camp up in arms. Eaton is definitely an underrated singles competitor, and put together a great effort here against Rogers. Both Cornette and Heenan got involved, but spent most of the time yelling at one another and didn’t figure in the outcome. Rogers kicked out of two Alabama Jams, and Eaton twice survived the Figure Four Grapevine. It was a picture perfect flying crossbody by the Nature Boy that finally put Eaton away. Cornette threw a hissy fit after the match until a group hug with Eaton and adopted brother Kip calmed him down.
A tough night for Jim Cornette’s crew, although they will get Loverboy Dennis back next week as he returns from an injury inflicted by the Heenan Family. Doctor Death with a big pinfall on Masked Superstar as the rivalry between these two is heating up quickly. Next week, the Armory in Akron will host the “go-home” show leading to SUMMER SHOWDOWN and, though no titles will be contested, it will certainly be an eventful evening! Here’s the current lineup:
• With his Mongols in the title picture, Sir Oliver Humperdink is bringing in a “mystery team” to do battle with the masked Crusaders! The manager hasn’t given out many hints to their identity other than the fact they have never competed in the NWF previously!
• “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey returns and will face Bob Armstrong in singles action!
• Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens tackle North American kingpin Buddy Rogers and Bobby “the Brain” Heenan! You know Nick & Ray would love to get their hands on Heenan in that one!
• Brian Armstrong will try to extend his two match winning streak against Kip Cornette when the two meet in a Singapore Cane Match!
• In a rare show of cooperation between managers, NWF Champion Masked Superstar from Hot Stuff International will team with the House of Humperdink’s Terry Gordy in the main event! They’ll square off against a sensational combination that was successful earlier this evening, Steve Williams and young phenom Magnum T.A.!
We’ll see you next week in Akron!
