Damn Hodge and Williams both lost...but no shame in losing to either Bock or Gotch. Very cool to see Rocca go over The Sheik. Looking forward to the next card with Bock vs. Lewis..that should be a show stealer.

Thanks to Kevin and The Ace for the comments!
Highlights from the last two episodes of USWA Championship Wrestling: • It was announced on the July 25 episode that the two former Oklahoma Sooners will hook up once again on August 14 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, as Steve “Dr. Death” Williams will face Danny Hodge. Last time these two met in Lawton, OK, Williams was disqualified for a low blow head butt, which he claimed was inadvertent. • Also on the Memphis card, Brad Armstrong and “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware will take on Jim Cornette’s Heavenly Bodies for the very first time. • Lance Russell announced that former World Tag Team champion “Dastardly” Danny Doring has decided to leave the USWA, after the betrayal of “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Sensational” Sherri Martel. Rumors are that Doring will be headed to PNW (Pacific Northwest Wrestling) based in Portland and try his luck there. • No offense to Doring, but in somewhat bigger news, it was announced on the August 1 edition that three-time former Southern Heavyweight champion The Sheik and his manager, Abdullah Farouk, have left the USWA after Sheik failed to regain the Southern title from Antonino “Argentina” Rocca. Bill Apter reported this and said that his sources indicated that Sheik and Farouk will be returning to BTW (Big Time Wrestling) in Detroit. Sheik’s former rival in the USWA, Bobo Brazil, currently holds the United States Heavyweight championship, and you can bet Sheik would love to defeat Bobo and regain that title!
The USWA returns to Ft. Worth on August 8, and will hold a card for the first time at the Tarrant County Convention Center! • In a rematch from March, The Killer Bees will take on Buff Bagwell and Chris Candido. These teams had an awesome ****¾ match in Nashville that saw Bagwell and Candido come out the winners. Both teams are hoping for a victory, in order to move up and earn a shot at the World Tag Team titles. • “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka will face one-half of the World Tag Team champions Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Snuka and Valentine are two long-time USWA superstars and have met many times in the past. Interestingly this will be Valentine’s first singles match of 2009, as he has focused on his two tag teams with Magnificent Muraco and Brutus Beefcake. Can “The Hammer” get a win over the Fijian warrior? • Steve Williams will lock up once again with Dan Severn. In their first singles meeting, Williams got a countout win. Williams has pinned Severn in tag team competition and would love to do the same in singles action. Will it be “Dr. Death” or “The Beast” to get the win in Ft. Worth? • A big six-man tag team match will take place as Southern Heavyweight champion Antonino Rocca teams up with Diamond Dallas Page and The Crusher to face the Heenan Family trio of Larry Zbyszko and The Hennigs. These six men have had some great match-ups. The fan favorites are fighting on behalf of the injured Johnny Valentine, whom the Hennigs injured along with Nick Bockwinkel. Which trio will emerge victorious? • “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton will defend the USWA Texas championship against “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant. Valiant got disqualified in their last meeting. Can he keep his cool and win the gold or will Eaton continue to reign? • The main event will be a huge match-up as Nick Bockwinkel challenges Ed “Strangler” Lewis for the USWA World Heavyweight championship. The history between these two has been documented in previous USWA updates. Bockwinkel is going for his record-setting fourth World title. Can he do it or will Lewis keep a stranglehold on the gold? All this plus two new tag teams will do battle, as The Heavenly Bodies face “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe. And “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan will be in action, as well as Brad Armstrong and “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware!

Thanks to Kevin, Markoda, and Executioner for the comments and predictions!
August 7, 2009 Card #216: Tarrant County Convention Center in Ft. Worth
1) Brad Armstrong and Koko B. Ware got a win in the opener, over another popular team—S.D. Jones and Cousin Luke. Long-time USWA fans will remember that Jones and Ware used to be a regular tag team. The former partners didn’t lock up in this one, as Ware got the pin on the hillbilly Luke after a few minutes with a flying head butt. All four men showed sportsmanship by shaking hands afterward. ½*
2) “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan pinned Brutus Beefcake. Duggan hit his flying spear early on, but Capt. Lou Albano distracted Frank Morrell before Duggan could make a cover. Beefcake later his flying knee smash, but Duggan kicked out. Duggan reversed a whip into the buckle and sent Beefcake flying into the corner and out of the ring. The San Francisco native was shook up. He climbed back into the ring, woozy, and didn’t notice that Duggan was again in the three-point stance and ready to deliver another spear. Duggan blasted Beefcake and then made the cover to get the pinfall. **¼
3) In a battle of two rulebreaking tag teams, The Heavenly Bodies defeated “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe. Rose and Sharpe showed some good teamwork, keeping “Sweet” Stan Lane in the ring for several minutes. Dr. Tom Prichard finally tagged in and worked over Rose. Lane came back in and accidentally dropkicked Paul Neighbors when Rose dodged the kick. With the official out, mayhem broke loose, as all four men, as well as Jim Cornette and “Sensational” Sherri Martel got involved! The Bodies gained the advantage as Prichard clocked Sharpe with Cornette’s tennis racquet, busting him open. Neighbors came to, as Sharpe briefly came back and hit a piledriver on Lane for a near fall. Rose tagged in and gave The Bodies a taste of their own medicine, as he clocked Lane with Sherri’s purse, while Sharpe distracted Neighbors. Lane somehow managed to kick out. As Sharpe tagged back in, Lane escaped and tagged to Prichard as well. Prichard worked over the bloody Sharpe and choked him over the ropes. As Neighbors backed Prichard off, Cornette clocked Sharpe with the racquet again. This allowed Prichard to make a cover and score the win, while Lane kept the “Playboy” at bay. ****
4) Danny Hodge scored a submission win over “The Unpredictable” Johnny Rodz. Rodz gave Hodge a few anxious moments, but the Oklahoman maintained control and won in the end with a Boston Crab, using his great grip strength to trap Rodz. ¼*
5) Buff Bagwell and Chris Candido scored a sneaky win over The Killer Bees. This was a good match, but not on the level of their classic bout in March. Bagwell and Candido continued to showcase their great double teaming and kept B. Brian Blair in the ring for the long period of time. The Bees donned the masks and pulled the switch with “Jumping” Jim Brunzell unloading on “Buff Daddy”. The masked Brunzell hit the dropkick on Bagwell and went for a cover, but Jerry Calhoun was getting Blair out of the ring. Candido seized the opportunity and dove off the top rope with a diving head butt to the back of Brunzell’s head. He then pulled a switch of his own, reversing the pin and putting his partner Bagwell on top. Calhoun turned around and made the count, giving Bagwell and Candido the victory. **¾
6) “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka pinned one-half of the World Tag Team champions Greg “The Hammer” Valentine in a hard-hitting bout. This was a back-and-forth bout. While Valentine couldn’t keep Snuka down for a pin, he administered a ton of punishment, using neckbreakers and piledrivers to weaken the Fijian warrior. Paul Neighbors, recovered from the earlier tag team match, almost got wiped out again, when Valentine almost nailed him with a clothesline in the corner. “The Hammer” stopped short, but then got rolled up by Snuka for a near fall. Valentine had the advantage and sent Snuka to the outside. He pummeled Snuka with elbows, then attempted to bring him back in, but Snuka surprised him with a head butt on the apron and busted him open. Valentine went down and Snuka went immediately to the top rope and came off with a huge Superfly Leap. Capt. Lou Albano, sensing his man was in danger, got up on the apron, but got a head butt of his own. Snuka then covered Valentine and scored the pin. ***
7) Steve Williams scored a pinfall over Dan Severn in another hard-hitting match. Williams early on showed his strength, by pressing Severn and dropping him to the match. As Severn got to his feet, “Dr. Death” followed up with a lariat for a near fall. Severn made a comeback and locked on the wakigatame, but Williams got a foot on the ropes. Williams came back and hit a huge backdrop driver. He soon smashed Severn with a football tackle and went for a cover. RPW coach Dick Hutton put Severn’s foot on the rope, unseen by Frank Morrell. Williams later got Severn up again and delivered a thunderous Oklahoma Stampede to put “The Beast” down for the count. ***¼
8) Three Heenan Family members worked well together, as The Hennigs and Larry Zbyszko defeated Diamond Dallas Page, The Crusher, and Southern Heavyweight champion Antonino Rocca. The fan favorites started off strong, pummeling Zbyszko. Zbyszko tagged out to the big Larry “The Axe” Hennig, who worked over Crusher. He smashed Crusher’s head into the announcers’ table at ringside, while Jerry Calhoun was tied up with the other wrestlers and Bobby Heenan. Curt tagged in, but Crusher gave The Hennigs a noggin knocker and managed to tag out to “Argentina” Rocca. Rocca dazzled Curt with his offense and had him up in the Argentinian Backbreaker, but Curt quickly got a foot over the top rope. Page tagged in and hit a Diamond Cutter, but Curt got his foot on the ropes. Crusher came in again, but again got cheated outside the ring, as Curt smashed him into the ring post and busted him open. Zbyszko tagged in and worked over Crusher, hitting a piledriver, but Page made the save. Larry and Rocca were in the ring and the big man slammed Rocca hard. He tagged out to son Curt, who hit a Hennig Plex, but Rocca kicked out. Curt immediately caught Rocca in a second Hennig Plex and scored a clean pinfall on the Southern champ, as the two Larrys held Crusher and Page back. The Heenan Family was in a celebratory mood at this point, and hadn’t gotten to the main event yet, with Nick Bockwinkel challenging for the USWA World Heavyweight title ! ***¾
9) The longest reigning USWA Texas champion continues to reign, as “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton pinned “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant. Jim Cornette has now added the line about “longest reigning champion” to his introduction for Eaton. Eaton was aggressive and worked over “Handsome” Jimmy. Valiant kicked out of one Alabama Jam, but a second Jam soon put him down after just a few minutes. DUD
10) The main event was the third meeting between Ed “Strangler” Lewis and Nick Bockwinkel. The difference in this match was that Lewis was now the USWA World Heavyweight champion and the title was on the line. We had current and three-time titleholder Lewis fighting three-time former champ Bockwinkel, with Bockwinkel going for his record-breaking fourth belt. The Ft. Worth fans were pumped for this huge match. The two grapplers started slow with some great mat wrestling and holds for nearly ten minutes. The fans were into the match and respectful for the great technical wrestling they were seeing. As things picked up, Lewis threw Bockwinkel down with the Strangler’s Headlock and attempted to pin his shoulders down, but couldn’t. Bockwinkel recovered after a breather outside the ring and came back with the Bockwinkel Sleeper, but Lewis made the ropes. Bockwinkel took Lewis outside and stomped his previously injured ankle, trying to get a countout win, like he did at New Year’s Knockout V. Lewis was slow to get up, but managed to get back in just by nine. Bockwinkel was smart and quickly went for the figure-four leglock. Lewis sensed this and kicked Bockwinkel, sending him flying. Lewis had the crowd behind him and fought back, going for the headlock again. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan twice got involved to distract Jerry Calhoun from counting the pin or checking for a submission. Bockwinkel was bloodied up, but fought back. He smashed Lewis’ head into the apron outside the ring in a brawl, and soon the champ was bloodied up. This was a back-and-forth championship bout. Bockwinkel trapped Lewis in an abdominal stretch and looked to be weaking Lewis, but suddenly the “Strangler” got to the ropes. Lewis caught the challenger coming off the top rope with a flying body press and slammed him to the mat. Bockwinkel got up, but was quickly down again in the Strangler’s Headlock. Lewis couldn’t pin Bockwinkel’s shoulders down, so he kept the headlock on to try and make Bockwinkel tap. The fans were cheering Lewis on, as “The Brain” was going nuts at ringside. After trying to break free, Bockwinkel finally tapped out, giving Lewis the hard-fought victory and keeping him as champ! ****½

Thanks, Kevin, for the comments!
Highlights from USWA Championship Wrestling on August 8: • Two big championship bouts were announced for upcoming cards on this show. First, as a result of what occurred in the six-man tag team match the night before in Ft. Worth, Curt Hennig will challenge Antonino “Argentina” Rocca for the USWA Southern Heavyweight title on August 21 in Louisville at the Gardens! The interesting thing is Curt has not yet wrestled in singles competition in the USWA. But Bobby “The Brain” Heenan made the challenge on Championship Wrestling, citing the fact that Hennig pinned Rocca in the six-man with the Hennig Plex. Never one to back down, Rocca accepted the challenge later in the show. • Ed “Strangler” Lewis’ next challenger for the USWA World Heavyweight title was announced as being Diamond Dallas Page! The two fan favorites will meet on September 4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington. This will be Page’s first shot at the World title. It will be interesting to see with whom the fans side—Page has become one of the most popular wrestlers in the USWA, but this match will be in Lewis’ home state! • Speaking of the “Strangler”, he will also be in competition on the 21st in his hometown of Louisville. The USWA champ will face Heenan Family member Larry Zbyszko in a special non-title match.
The USWA comes home to the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis on August 14! • Brad Armstrong and “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware will take on Jim Cornette’s Heavenly Bodies. “Sweet” Stan and Dr. Tom attacked the popular team at the Independence Day Bash in Chattanooga, but this will be the first official match-up between the teams. Who will walk out the winners? • In a hard-hitting rematch, The Crusher will collide with Larry “The Axe” Hennig. The elder Hennig gave Crusher quite a battle in Evansville a few weeks. Can he score a pinfall victory this time or will “Da” Crusher get revenge? • In another huge return bout, two Sooners will meet in the squared circle, when Steve “Dr. Death” Williams faces Danny Hodge. Hodge got a controversial DQ win last time and also holds a pinfall victory over Williams in the eight-man tag team Elimination Match at the Bash. You can bet that Williams will be chomping at the bit to defeat Hodge! • Before challenging for the World Heavyweight title, Diamond Dallas Page will collide with three-time former champ Nick Bockwinkel. DDP has beaten Bockwinkel by countout, but has yet to score a pin or submission victory on him. Bockwinkel will certainly be determined to stop Page, as you know he wants another shot at the “Strangler”. Will it be Bockwinkel coming out victorious or will Bock feel the BANG!? • The main event will be for the USWA World Tag Team titles, as Magnificent Muraco and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine put the gold on the line against Buff Bagwell and Chris Candido. These teams have met up a few times this year, with the newer team of Bagwell and Candido coming very close to victory. Remember fans, Muraco is still feeling the effects of a neck injury from “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant. Will the injury play into Bagwell and Candido’s favor? All this, plus Jimmy Snuka takes on Larry Zbyszko. You’ll also see the debut of “The Nebraska Tiger Man” John Pesek!

I recently had Bockwinkel and Page wrestle. It was all Bockwinkel until Page hit his finisher out of the blue and scored the pinfall!
