Wow, Curt Hennig could win the Southern Title in his first singles match! That would be a spectacular debut! And who can stop Beautiful Bobby? He's on fire!
Nice build up to the Lewis - Bockwinkel match. I'm working on something similar for my Race - Bockwinkel showdown.
Looking forward to Doc - Hodge II in Memphis.
Great job as always.

Thanks to Marky and Tim for the comments! Wow, Curt Hennig could win the Southern Title in his first singles match! That would be a spectacular debut! I actually have Curt booked to face S.D. on the next card. (I forget to put it in the card preview!) But winning the second top singles title in his second singles match would still be awesome! And who can stop Beautiful Bobby? He's on fire! I've been really impressed by Eaton's reign. The Texas title has typically been a hot potato, changing often in its few defenses. But Bobby's holding on to it strong! Nice build up to the Lewis - Bockwinkel match. I'm working on something similar for my Race - Bockwinkel showdown. I've been loving your Race-Bock feud over in the NWF! Looking forward to Doc - Hodge II in Memphis. Great job as always. Thanks! I appreciate the comments!

August 14, 2009 Card #217: Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis
1) Ted and Mike DiBiase were victorious in the opener, defeating Virgil and Johnny Rodz. Ted and former bodyguard Virgil matched up several times, and showed how well they know one another as it was back-and-forth. Virgil and Rodz took several shortcuts and cheap shots throughout the bout, trying to upset the father-son team. Virgil at one point locked Ted in the Million Dollar Dream, Ted’s former finisher. DiBiase looked weak, but with the support of his father and the fans, he kicked off the turnbuckles and got Virgil in a pinning combination for a count of two. “Iron” Mike and “The Unpredictable” Rodz were going at it. Mike showed his own punching strength, by knocking down Rodz, then pummeling him on the mat. Rodz was out and was easy prey for a cover and a pin. ***¼
2) Curt Hennig won his first singles match in the USWA, pinning “Special Delivery” Jones. S.D. wasn’t an easy opponent for the younger Hennig, as he gave Curt many anxious moments. Curt fought back and scored the pin with the Hennig Plex. Wile Hennig was victorious tonight, next week he’ll have a tougher challenge, in the main event going for the USWA Southern Heavyweight title against Antonino Rocca! **
3) The Killer Bees defeated “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe in a short, but wild tag team bout. Rose and Sharpe took control early, with some double teaming tactics on “Jumping” Jim Brunzell. Sharpe went for a cover, with his feet on the ropes for leverage, but as Scott Bowden was getting Rose out of the ring, B. Brian Blair ran around the outside of the ring and pushed Sharpe’s feet off the ropes, which allowed Brunzell to reverse the pin. Sharpe kicked out, but was then double teamed by The Bees the rest of the bout. “Sensational” Sherri Martel, nervous for her team, got involved by putting Sharpe’s foot on the ropes, as Brunzell made a cover. Unfortunately Bowden saw it and ordered Sherri back to the locker room for the rest of the match! Sherri was furious and screamed in anger, as the fans cheered! Blair had Sharpe in trouble and tagged out to Brunzell. “Jumping” Jim hit a quick suplex on Sharpe and turned into a cover to score the pin. **¾
4) Larry Zbyszko got a cheap disqualification victory over “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. Snuka dominated Larry Z. throughout much of this bout, scoring a near fall after a flying body press off the top rope in the opening minutes. Zbyszko rolled out to the arena floor. As Paul Morton was watching Zbyszko and putting the count on him. Snuka went out the other side of the ring to attack. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan tried to sneak attack the Fijian warrior with a chair, but Snuka saw him coming and took the chair. He was about to hit “The Weasel”, when Zbyszko came around and spun Snuka around. Almost out of instinct, Snuka smashed Zbyszko with the chair. Unfortunately Morton saw this and was left with no choice but to call for the bell and disqualify Snuka. The fans were not happy about this one! Snuka realized his mistake and was mad at himself, but madder at Heenan and Zbyszko. You can bet these two will meet again somewhere down the road! ½*
5) Brad Armstrong and Koko B. Ware gained some revenge for the attack at the Independence Day Bash, pummeling “Sweet” Stan Lane and defeating The Heavenly Bodies by countout. Armstrong and Ware were a house of fire in this one, keeping Lane in the ring the whole match and even busting him open after a double dropkick. Armstrong hit the Russian leg sweep and went for a cover, but Jim Cornette distracted Tommy Gilbert. Armstrong got off of Lane and went after Cornette. Meanwhile, Dr. Tom Prichard pulled Lane out of the ring. Cornette ran over to his men and the three retreated to the locker room, getting counted out. While Armstrong and Ware were happy about the victory, they certainly will want to do battle with both Heavenly Bodies in the near future! DUD
6) “Tiger Man” John Pesek did not have a good first match in the USWA, as he was upset by George South! Pesek was accompanied to the ring by USWA World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis. Pesek showcased some good wrestling skills, but South caught him off guard and hit a big elbow drop. South then went up to the top rope and came off with a flying body press and a cover. Pesek kicked out right after the three-count, so it was too late! South celebrated his huge win. Pesek seemed embarrassed and upset by this. The World champ consoled his ally, as the two returned to the locker room. DUD
7) Larry “The Axe” Hennig scored a big pinfall win over The Crusher. Hennig seems to have Crusher’s number, as he outwrestled and overpowered Crusher throughout this bout. He nailed Crusher with The Axe, then put his feet on the ropes for added leverage to score the pin. Crusher was irate by the cheating, but the decision stood. ¾*
8) In the “Sooners Intra-Squad” rematch, Danny Hodge pinned Steve Williams in a hard-hitting battle. Hodge hit the Oklahoma side roll several times in the opening minutes, and came very close to a quick pin. “Dr. Death” fought back, catching Hodge coming off the second rope with a bear hug and slamming him into the turnbuckles. Hodge was knocked out of the ring with a football tackle and almost counted out, but got back in by eight. A few minutes later, Williams showcased his great power by press slamming Hodge to the floor, in a move that rocked the Mid-South Coliseum. With Dick Hutton’s coaching and encouragement, Hodge showed great fortitude in again beating the count, coming in this time at nine. Hodge fought back and worked over Williams. He locked him in Hutton’s finisher—the abdominal stretch. Williams was weakening, but wouldn’t surrender. Hodge took advantage, rolling Williams backward into a lateral guillotine. The move was enough to pin Williams and give Hodge the win. ***¼
9) Diamond Dallas Page scored perhaps his biggest USWA win to-date, defeating three-time former World champion Nick Bockwinkel. Bockwinkel was aggressive early on, knowing he needed a win to get back in the title picture. With the fans behind, Page rallied back and scored a two-count after a discus clothesline. Bockwinkel regained control and took the fight to the floor, but Page surprised him with a punch and threw him back in the ring. Page quickly followed up with the Diamond Cutter and scored the surprise pinfall! ¾*
10) The main event was for the USWA World Tag Team championship, as champions Magnificent Muraco and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine defended the titles against Buff Bagwell and Chris Candido. Muraco was still sporting a neck brace from the attack by Jimmy Snuka and Jimmy Valiant last month in Birmingham. Candido worked over Valentine in the opening minutes, hitting a diving head butt for a near fall. “Buff Daddy” tagged in, but got hit with a piledriver by Valentine. Muraco tagged in and hit the Hawaiian Hammer on Bagwell, but Bagwell managed to drape his foot over the bottom rope. Muraco blasted Bagwell with the Asiatic Spike, but knocked him into his own corner, so Bagwell was able to quickly tag out to Candido. “The Hammer” was in the ring for a long duration, as the challengers were able to make frequent tags and work him over. Valentine showed his toughness in coming back and wearing down Bagwell. Muraco came back in and slugged it out with Bagwell. The Hawaiian powerhouse managed to hit a vertical suplex on Bagwell and turn into a cover. While Valentine kept Candido at bay, Muraco scored the three-count, so the champs retained the gold. ***½

John Pesek defeated by George South? Now that's amazing as Pesek is unstoppable in my fed.

Thanks, Marky, for the comment! John Pesek defeated by George South? Now that's amazing as Pesek is unstoppable in my fed. I know--I was shocked! But it was one of those "low rolls". South hit a deathjump and Pesek rolled "snake eyes" or a "3". Hopefully Pesek does better in the long run!

Highlights of USWA Championship Wrestling from August 15: • Lance Russell interviewed World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis and John Pesek. Lewis said that Pesek’s loss to George South was just an upset and he believes that Pesek will get back on his feet. He mentioned how he himself lost some upsets early in his USWA tenure. Pesek spoke and said that he won’t make excuses; that he did kick out, but it was too late. He said when he meets South again, South won’t come that close to getting him down! • During a USWA news update segment, Bill Apter informed the fans that next week, he will have an interview with Johnny Valentine and get an update on the former USWA champ’s physical condition after the attack by Nick Bockwinkel and The Hennigs at the Independence Day Bash.
The last USWA card of the summer will take place on August 21, when the USWA comes back to the Louisville Gardens! • Before challenging for the USWA World Heavyweight title on September 4, Diamond Dallas Page will do battle with Larry “The Axe” Hennig. Hennig has gotten two wins over Page’s partner The Crusher recently. Can he defeat DDP as well or will Page make him feel the BANG!? • Frank Gotch will do battle with “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. Gotch recently wrestled some dates for Central States Wrestling and is now returning to continue the battle between Team RPW and Ted DiBiase’s group. Can Gotch put down “Hacksaw”? • In a special non-title match, Louisville native and USWA World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis will collide with Heenan Family member Larry Zbyszko. This would be a big victory for Zbyszko, if he could beat the World champ, and in his hometown, nonetheless! • Another Heenan Family member will be in the main event, as Curt Hennig will challenge for the USWA Southern Heavyweight championship when he takes on Antonino “Argentina” Rocca. Remember, fans, Hennig pinned Rocca with the Hennig Plex in the six-man tag team match two weeks ago. Can Curt repeat and capture the Southern gold or will Rocca stop him? All this plus The DiBiases, the team of Brad Armstrong and “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware, and “Tiger Man” John Pesek in action!

Another SOLID line up from the very impressive USWA.

Thanks to Kevin for the predictions!
August 21, 2009 Card #218: Louisville Gardens
1) S.D. Jones got a win in the opener over George South. South was hoping for his second win in a row, after scoring the huge upset over “Tiger Man” John Pesek last week in Memphis. He came close, scoring a near fall after a crossbody block. Jones rallied back and used several head butts to put South down for the 1-2-3. *
2) The Killer Bees came back and defeated The Heavenly Bodies, giving them their first pinfall loss in the USWA. Jim Cornette did not receive a hometown hero’s welcome, as the Louisville fans booed him mercilessly. The Bees worked over “Sweet” Stan Lane in the beginning of the match, keeping him in the ring. Dr. Tom Prichard tagged in and blasted “Jumping” Jim Brunzell with a big boot to the face. Right before tagging in, Cornette was seen handing Prichard an object, which he slipped into his boot. The loaded kick knocked Brunzell woozy and now it was The Bodies’ turn to cut the ring in half, as they blasted Brunzell with kicks, like Lane’s superkick and enzuigiris from both guys. Brunzell was eventually busted open, but with the crowd behind him made the hot tag to B. Brian Blair. Blair locked Prichard in a Boston Crab, but Lane made a save. Brunzell tagged in and The Bees hit the Bee Sting on Prichard. Cornette attempted to enter the ring, but got blasted with a dropkick from Blair! Prichard got to his feet, but Brunzell hit a beautiful flying head scissors. He turned into a cover and pinned Prichard for the big victory! ***½
3) “Tiger Man” John Pesek scored a quick submission win over Johnny Rodz. “The Unpredictable One” was hoping for an upset win over Pesek, just like George South, and attacked with some roughhouse brawling tactics. Pesek looked like he might lose another one, but out of nowhere, he took Rodz down to the mat, slapped on one of his specialties--the double wristlock, and forced Rodz to submit. Fans gave Pesek a good ovation for his win. ¼*
4) Brad Armstrong and “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware defeated “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe. The rulebreaking duo of Rose and Sharpe tried every shortcut possible to get a big win, utilizing “Sensational” Sherri Martel’s distraction skills. Rose brought in Sherri’s purse at one point and clocked Ware with it. Rose later had the advantage after Ware was shoved off the top rope by Sharpe and decided to go up to the top rope himself. He dove off with a double sledge, but Ware dodged it and delivered a boot to the stomach. He then followed up with the Ghostbuster, but was too weakened to make a cover. Ware managed to tag out to Armstrong, who hit the Russian leg sweep, but Sherri again distracted Tommy Marlin. Sharpe tagged in, but got taken down by the leg sweep too. Armstrong floated into a cover and scored the pin. ***¼
5) “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant scored a big win defeating Danny Hodge by submission. Hodge has been on a roll lately and perhaps the unorthodox Valiant too lightly. Valiant used his sleeper several times throughout the bout. Hodge would not go down easily, as he used his technical wrestling skills and great grip strength to try and beat “The Boy from New York City”. Hodge hit the Oklahoma side roll on two occasions, but Valiant kicked out. Hodge was busted open after a brawl outside the ring and got trapped in Valiant’s sleeper again. He fought hard for the ropes, but weakened. Tom Branch checked his arm and it dropped three times, giving “The Boogie Woogie Man” a huge victory. ***¼
6) Ted and Mike DiBiase beat Buff Bagwell and Chris Candido. Bagwell and Candido had control of Ted early. Candido hit the Blonde Bomb on Ted, but couldn’t score the pin. Ted finally tagged out to “Iron” Mike, who took a beating, but stayed strong and fought back. Ted tagged back in and worked over Bagwell. He got the pin on “Buff Daddy” after an elbow smash off the second rope, while Mike stopped Candido from making a save. **
7) Diamond Dallas Page pinned Larry “The Axe” Hennig. Hennig used his power advantage and looked on his way to defeating DDP. Sam Platania almost got sandwiched in the corner, as Hennig attempted to hit Page with The Axe, but Hennig stopped short, probably not wanting to get disqualified. Hennig turned around, but got blasted by the Diamond Dream. Hennig recovered, climbed to his feet, but was down again, as Page hit the Diamond Cutter and scored the pin. Page has big momentum pinning the big Hennig, going into his World title shot on the next card. **¾
8) Frank Gotch made short work of “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. Gotch look extra focused and aggressive, taking Duggan down quickly and using a series of punches to knock the big man out. Gotch turned into a cover and scored the pin in less than a minute. DUD
9) USWA World Heavyweight champion and hometown hero Ed “Strangler” Lewis scored a strong win over Larry Zbyszko in a non-title bout. To little surprise, the reaction for the champ was deafening when he entered the Louisville Gardens. With the crowd behind him, Lewis controlled most of the bout, going for the headlock several times. Zbyszko gained control after Lewis missed a double leg takedown and hit the turnbuckle. Zbyszko then attempted to take the padding off, infuriating the crowd! He was unsuccessful in removing it and tried coming off the buckles instead with a knee drop, but missed, allowing the champ to regain control. Lewis went for the Strangler’s Headlock again, and drew blood on Zbyszko, but Bobby Heenan jumped on the apron. Lewis released Zbyszko and applied the headlock to “The Brain”! The crowd went wild at the sight! Lewis released Heenan, who dropped to the arena floor. He then went back to Zbyszko, took him down in the headlock and forced him to tap, to a big ovation! *½
10) The main event pit Antonino “Argentina” Rocca against Heenan Family member Curt Hennig for Rocca’s USWA Southern Heavyweight championship. Bobby Heenan was recovered from the Strangler’s Headlock after the pre-main event intermission and accompanied Hennig to ringside for this huge match. Hennig was on the offensive early, going for the Hennig Plex, the same move that pinned Rocca two weeks ago in the six-man tag team match. Rocca was in trouble and went to the floor, but Heenan attacked with some kicks to the ribs. Hennig smashed Rocca into a turnbuckle in the ring and busted him open, then went for a sleeper. Heenan’s involvement brought out The Crusher—who wasn’t scheduled to wrestle on the card, but was infuriated by Heenan’s interference. He went after the manager around the ring. Heenan crawled in the ring and hid behind Tom Branch! While Branch was getting “The Weasel” out of the ring, Hennig yelled at Crusher. Crusher responded with a big punch to the head! This allowed Rocca to catch his breath and get some momentum. The champ whipped the challenger into the buckle. The force and momentum of the whip sent Hennig up and over the top rope to the floor. Hennig was hurt and almost got counted out, but with Heenan’s encouragement made it back into the ring. Larry Hennig came out and attacked Crusher from behind with a forearm smash. The two brawled to the back while several USWA referees and officials tried to separate them. This kept Heenan at ringside in the challenger’s corner and gave Hennig a “man advantage”. Rocca lifted Curt up into the Argentinian Backbreaker. Curt looked in trouble, but Heenan grabbed his man’s leg, unseen by Branch, and draped it over the top rope, then yelled at Branch to point it out. The fans were irate by this! Rocca went up to the top rope and came off with a missile dropkick right to Hennig’s face, busting him open as well. The bout was a physical bout, going back-and-forth. Out of nowhere, Curt hit a running knee lift, knocking Rocca to his knees. The challenger picked Rocca up and hit another Hennig Plex. Rocca was locked in tight and couldn’t kick out, so Branch called for the bell and crowned a new Southern champion! Heenan and Hennig fled to the locker room with the belt in hand. You can bet “The Brain” and the rest of The Heenan Family was celebrating on this night, as Hennig is the first Heenan Family member to hold the Southern gold! ****½

Highlights of USWA Championship Wrestling from August 22 and 29: • An interview aired on the 8-22 edition, where Bill Apter had traveled to Seattle to talk to Johnny Valentine. The first USWA World Heavyweight champion said that he was recovering well from his leg injury. He was disappointed that the injury had “derailed” his return to the USWA somewhat. He thanked wrestlers like Antonino Rocca, The Crusher, and Diamond Dallas Page for battling The Heenan Family members while he was going. When Apter asked him if he would team up with these fan favorites when he returns to ring action, Valentine said that while he wouldn’t say “never”, he’d prefer to get his revenge on his own. He said he’ll take on all The Heenan Family members en route to challenging for and regaining the USWA World Heavyweight championship. • Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and the other Family members responded to Valentine’s comments on the following week’s show. The manager said that Valentine is a fool to challenge the Family by himself, and to prove it, they will put him out of wrestling for good! Heenan said that Larry “The Axe” Hennig would be the first “volunteer” to crush Valentine. The match was made for September 11 at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville! • A special interview took place on the 8-29 show, as Lance Russell interviewed both participants in the next USWA main event—World Heavyweight champion Ed “Strangler” Lewis and Diamond Dallas Page. Both men were cordial to one another, but things got a little tense as the interview went on. The champ said that while he respects Page as a man of the people, he doesn’t feel that the challenger can last with him, as his (Lewis’) matches often go a long period of time. Page stated that it doesn’t matter how long the match goes, what matters is who gets the win and walks out the champ. Russell mentioned that both men interestingly got wins over the longest reigning USWA champ, Nick Bockwinkel, in the month of August. Page emphasized again how he got a fairly quick win over Bockwinkel. Lewis stated that that was impressive, but that he has never gotten pinned or submitted to Bockwinkel, while Page has. At the end of the interview, both men reluctantly shook hands and Page stated the best man will walk out of the Rupp Arena the champ on September 4.
The summer may be over, but the action is still hot, hot, hot in the USWA! On September 4, the Rupp Arena in Lexington will host a huge card! • Ted and Mike DiBiase will team up to face The Dream Team! Ted and Steve Williams lost to the duo back in July in Birmingham by DQ. The DiBiases are hoping for a big win, as they continue to impress in tag team competition! • Curt Hennig may be the new Southern Heavyweight champion, but he’s not done with tag team action. He’ll team up with his father Larry “The Axe” to face Antonino “Argentina” Rocca and The Crusher in a huge battle! Crusher and Larry have had some physical battles, and the Southern title bout between Curt and Rocca on the last card was a classic. What will happen when all four are in action in one match? • Steve “Dr. Death” Williams continues the war with Team RPW, when he’ll face his main rival Dan “The Beast” Severn. Williams has lost his last two bouts, to Danny Hodge and Frank Gotch respectively. He’s hoping to get back on track with a win against Severn. So far he’s done well against Severn. Can he repeat? • A big tag team match between two popular teams will take place, when The Killer Bees take on Brad Armstrong and Koko B. Ware for the first time ever! This will be a #1 Contenders’ Match, as the winners will face Magnificent Muraco and Greg Valentine in the main event for the USWA World Tag Team titles next week in Nashville! Both teams have had a good string of wins lately, but which one will a shot at the Tag Team gold? • Two long-time USWA wrestlers will do battle again, as Nick Bockwinkel collides with “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka. These two have had back-and-forth battles in the past. Who will emerge victorious in Lexington? • The main event will be a big one, as Ed “Strangler” Lewis puts the USWA World Heavyweight championship on the line against Diamond Dallas Page. Some interesting statistics were given about these two ring greats on the last edition of Championship Wrestling. This is Page’s first shot at the World title. While DDP has become popular among fans in many of the USWA’s cities, Lewis will be in his home state. Will a new champion be crowned or will Lewis keep his stranglehold on the belt? All this, plus “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan will face Larry Zbyszko. Also, Frank Gotch, “Tiger Man” John Pesek, and more USWA greats in action!
