That main event between Mad Dog Vachon and Kevin Sullivan in Knoxville had Detroit written all over it. Appropriate since there was some great Big Time Wrestling action underneath. I loved The Sheik & Pampero Firpo over Angelo & Lanny Poffo plus that tag team classic between Bobby Fulton & Fred Curry and the Uptown Boys. There's nothing better than a night of USWA action!

Thanks to Troy, Crue Fan, and Victory Roll for the comments!
Highlights from USWA Championship Wrestling on August 12: • After the short disappointing ending to last week’s main event, Commissioner Bob Armstrong verified that “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan will defend the USWA World Heavyweight title once again against Mad Dog Vachon! That rematch will take place on Labor Day—September 4 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis! Vachon was interviewed in-studio, flanked by Doctor X, and sported a bandage on his head from the World champion’s golden spike. The Algerian brawler claimed that Sullivan was scared of him and knew his World title was in jeopardy, which is why he got disqualified so quickly. He said that Sullivan can throw spikes, chairs, chains, or any weapon at him but that won’t stop him from taking the World title! • The commissioner announced some more big match-ups for the August 21 card at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Coliseum in Evansville! o Mad Dog Vachon will have another big bout when he takes on rival “Superstar” Bill Dundee! These two have been battling for months with many of their bouts ending on disqualifications. Will a decisive winner be determined in this one? o The World Tag Team champions will be in non-title action as The Heavenly Bodies battled Brad and Brian Armstrong! The Armstrongs have given the champions headaches in bout this year and Jim Cornette is never a fan of the Armstrongs! o Two rematches were signed based off the results of last week’s card in Knoxville. First, “The Boogie Woogie Man” “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant will go one-on-one again with “Classy” Freddie Blassie! Blassie drew the ire of Valiant’s ally Red Bastien, who attacked Blassie and got Valiant disqualified. Can Blassie score a decisive win on the two-time former World champion? o Steve “Dr. Death” Williams and Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy gave “The Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff and the Japanese Olympian Mr. Saito a tough challenge last week. The House of Humperdink looked like they might get the win in the end when Saito had Williams in the Scorpion Leglock but a double disqualification ended up being the result after 30 minutes when all four men were in the ring brawling. These teams will collide again in Evansville and the two-time former World Tag Team champions are hoping to give Koloff and Saito their first loss!
The USWA joins forces for the third year in a row with Big Time Wrestling out of the Great Lakes region of Ohio and Michigan to promote a great card! This year’s join card will be held on August 14 at the Hancock County Rec Center in “Flag City, USA”—Findlay, OH! • Bobby Fulton and “Flying” Fred Curry are riding high, coming off giving the Uptown Boys their first loss last week in Knoxville! This week, the popular duo will battle the hated Tolos Brothers—John and Chris! The Greek brothers continue to run roughshod throughout the BTW and they would love to stop Fulton and Curry’s momentum. Can they do it or will the fan favorites pull off their second big win in as many weeks? • A man who will certainly be popular in “Flag City” will be in action, as The Patriot will take on the wild man with the green tongue from Detroit—George “The Animal” Steele! Steele is still managed by Abdullah Farouk and continues to cause havoc in BTW! The Patriot is hoping to get back on track and get another shot at Kevin Sullivan’s World Heavyweight championship. But you have to wonder the condition of his eye, particularly coming off his loss to Doctor X a few weeks ago at the Nashville Fairgrounds. Can the Patriot soar to victory over “The Animal”? • A long-running feud from the Midwest will be renewed on a USWA card, as Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana will collide with “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce! When Cabana started targeting Jim Cornette’s men after they put Bryan Danielson out of action in April, Cornette fired back by bringing Cabana’s nemesis Pearce into the USWA. Pearce has been undefeated in his first USWA outings but this will be his toughest opponent to date. Can Pearce give Cabana more problems or will the host of The Art of Wrestling strike back hard? • A battle with which USWA fans are familiar will occur, when the first Southern Heavyweight champion Bobo Brazil battles the homicidal, suicidal, genocidal, death-defying Bombay madman—Sabu! These two are no strangers to each other, both in the USWA and in BTW. Brazil’s main goal continues to be to dethrone the Sheik for the BTW U.S. title but for now, he will do battle with the Sheik’s nephew. Can Bobo stop the madman or will he feel the wrath of a high-flying Sabu attack? • In a special attraction and the first of four championship bouts, former USWA Texas champion Danny Hodge will defend the NWA World Jr. Heavyweight title against Jerry Brisco! USWA fans remember Hodge from his time in the area from 2007 to 2011 when he was injured by Ivan Koloff. Hodge qualified for the 2012 Olympics in freestyle wrestling and then returned to the pro ranks. He went after the NWA World Jr. Heavyweight title, which he had held prior to ’07, and won that title quickly. He has held it for much of the past four years and has defended it against challengers from around the world in several territories. He has had some intense battles with Brisco in Championship Wrestling from Florida. Brisco, who has held the CWF Southern Tag Team titles with Thunderbolt Patterson and has competed in BTW, is a great amateur and singles pro wrestler but hasn’t won the Jr. Heavyweight title yet. This is a battle of Oklahoma colleges, as Hodge is a former Oklahoma Sooner while Brisco is an Oklahoma State Cowboy alumnus. Both men being native Oklahomans like to use the Oklahoma side roll to score the pinfall. Will this be Brisco's night or will Hodge keep his great grip on the gold? • Ray “The Crippler” Stevens will defend the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship against Tommy Gilbert! The Gilbert patriarch was involved in the USWA in the past as an official but did not compete as a wrestler until this past December when he came back to target “The Gamesmaster” Kevin Sullivan and the House of Humperdink for injuring his son Eddie and causing (in his mind) the disappearance of his son Doug. He has proven tough in his battles with the House of Humperdink and has compiled an impressive win-loss record, as this will be his first time challenging for a USWA championship. Stevens has been an impressive Mid-America champion, holding the title three times over the last two years and defending it against a variety of challengers. Wrestling experts have to wonder if Bobby Shane’s victory over Gilbert last week in Knoxville will give fellow First Family of Wrestling member Stevens an added edge. Eddie will be with his father once to keep an eye on Jimmy Hart and other First Family members who may make a surprise trip to Findlay. Can Gilbert win his first USWA title or will it be Bombs Away for the challenger? • In the first of the double main event, The Sheik, accompanied by manager Abdullah Farouk, will defend the BTW United States Heavyweight title against the popular Angelo Poffo! Poffo has been chasing the Syrian madman over the past year but has yet to win the U.S. title, as the Sheik pulls out a victory by devious means or gets disqualified to hold on to the gold! Will the man who achieved 6,033 sit-ups finally stop the Sheik or will the champion continue to dominate? • The other main event will be for the USWA World Tag Team titles, as Jim Cornette’s Heavenly Bodies will defend the titles against The Uptown Boys! These two teams met at Beech Bend Raceway Park at Independence Day Bash in a non-title match that saw Tommy Rogers and Marty Jannetty defeat the champions. Cornette has blamed that loss on his former bodyguard Dan Severn and his backfired interference and that with his current bodyguard Mr. Hughes, Tom Prichard and Chris Candido will retain. The Bodies have proven to be an effective tag team since returning to the USWA with Cornette in April 2016. The Uptown Boys have also worked well together but the champions may have one advantage with the Uptown Boys having suffered their first loss last week in Knoxville to Bobby Fulton and “Flying” Fred Curry. Can the Uptown Boys capture the gold or will the Bodies leave “Flag City” still the champions?
All these bouts, as well as Pampero Firpo taking on “Leaping” Lanny Poffo! And “Wild” Bull Curry battles Lima, OH’s own Al Snow, when the USWA and BTW join forces for a great night of wrestling!

Thanks to Victory Roll and Troy for the comments!
Hope everyone has a great Labor Day weekend!
August 14, 2017 Card #516: Hancock County Rec Center in Findlay, OH
1) “Wild” Bull Curry made short work of Lima, OH native Al Snow in the opener. Snow tried his hardest but Curry was dominant, taking the action out of the ring in a hurry. He rammed Snow’s head into the guard railing and then pinned him in about five minutes with an Alligator Clutch. DUD
2) “The Wild Bull of The Pampas” Pampero Firpo dominated “Leaping” Lanny Poffo and scored a quick pinfall win. Poffo got cheers from the crowd before the match for a poem about Findlay’s patriotism. Poffo caught Firpo in a headlock at the bell but Firpo broke free and went on a rampage against Poffo. He hit a backbreaker for a near fall before locking on El Garfio. Poffo fought hard for the ropes but finally went down to the mat and Firpo was able to score the pinfall in about two minutes. Abdullah Farouk was happy with his charge’s win! DUD
3) Bobby Fulton and “Flying” Fred Curry, son of “Wild” Bully Curry, made a huge comeback to defeat John and Chris Tolos! The Toloses brutalized Fulton in the first few minutes and looked as if they would screw a quick victory. John used the corkscrew early on and tried to get a submission but Fulton made the ropes. Fulton made the tag to Curry who ran wild but John cut him off. Fulton tagged back in but again Chris cut him off. The Greeks executed their double team version of the flying knee drop with John holding down Fulton and Chris coming off the second ropes, right to Fulton’s head and busting him open. John went for the pin but Fulton kicked out. John tried again for the corkscrew and looked like he was about to put Fulton out but Curry made the save. Fulton rallied back against Chris and tagged to Curry. Curry leapt over the ropes and nailed Chris with a dropkick. He covered Chris but Chris kicked out. “Flying” Fred went for a flying head scissors. Chris had the wherewithal to block the takeover. He took Curry near the Toloses’ corner and John grabbed Curry’s neck, driving him throat-first onto the top rope. Chris tagged his brother, who went for a cover but John kicked out. Curry rallied back and nailed Tolos with his machine gun dropkicks (a rapid series of dropkicks). He covered John but John kicked out. Fulton tagged back and the fan favorites hit the Rocket Launcher but John barely got the shoulder up! (It was so close that the Findlay fans booed BTW referee Ken “Tiger” Tasker, thinking he messed up the count!) John staggered to his feet and punched Fulton but Fulton rallied back with three big right hands. John dropped to the mat and seemed out. Fulton went right for a cover but Chris made a save. John again staggered to his feet but Fulton surprised him with a small package for another near fall. John finally took advantage on a mistake by Curry and tagged to Chris. Chris worked over “Flying” Fred but again the flyer fought back and hit the dropkicks. Chris went to the mat and Curry tagged Fulton. Chris got back to his feet but Fulton came flying in from the apron with a sunset flip. He held Chris’s shoulders down and scored the pinfall before John could make a save! The Rec Center exploded at the fan favorites’ huge comeback win! ****¼
4) The Patriot battled back to score a pinfall on George “The Animal” Steele. The Patriot had “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert in his corner, while Steele was accompanied by his manager Abdullah Farouk. The Patriot’s eye seems to have healed, as he was not sporting a bandage on the eye tonight. The masked man had the initial advantage but Steele took over with a thumb to the throat. He rammed Patriot into the top turnbuckle and then removed the pad, causing the stuffings to fly! Farouk distracted Paul Morton, while Steele grabbed the American hero and slammed his head into the exposed metal twice, then grabbed him in a headlock and rammed his head in a third time! He covered Patriot, as Morton turned around to count the pin. The masked man managed to kick out. Steele took the bout to the floor, while Farouk again distracted Morton. “The Animal” grabbed a steel chair and went to hit Patriot but Gilbert ran over and grabbed the chair from him. Steele charged “Hot Stuff” but Gilbert sidestepped him and Steele hit the ring post. Patriot recovered and tossed the green-tongued wildman back inside. He immediately climbed up the ropes and came off with the Patriot Missile to score the pinfall! The “Flag City” fans gave the Patriot and Gilbert a big ovation as Patriot held up the American flag following his win! **
5) In the renewal of a classic feud from the Midwest, “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce defeated Colt Cabana, thanks in large part to Jim Cornette and Mr. Hughes. Pearce attacked “Boom Boom” at the start. He hit a spinebuster about two minutes into the bout and went for a cover but Cabana kicked out. Pearce maintained control for another minute and went up top. He came off with a frog splash but Cabana rolled out of the way. Cabana attempted the Colt .45 but Pearce, knowing the move well blocked it. Cabana maintained control and hit the finisher about a minute later but Pearce kicked out. Cabana stayed on the offense for several minutes and hit another Colt .45. He covered Pearce near the ropes but Cornette placed Pearce’s foot on the bottom rope. Scott Bowden saw the foot but not Cornette’s involvement but Cabana saw “The Louisville Slugger” get involved. He went after Cornette outside the ring. Cornette ran up to the apron, which got Bowden’s attention and allowed the bodyguard Hughes to attack Cabana from behind with a big forearm. He tossed Cabana back inside and Pearce took control. He stayed on Cabana and hit the jumping piledriver to pick up the pinfall win. The Findlay fans let Pearce, Cornette, and Cabana know what they thought of their actions! ***
6) The first USWA Southern Heavyweight champion Bobo Brazil picked up an impressive win over Sabu. Sabu came out fast and furious at the opening bell. He brought in a steel chair early and attempted his triple jump moonsault but missed and Brazil took control. He hit a body slam and dropped down into a pin attempt but Sabu kicked out. Brazil nailed one Coco Butt but Sabu kicked out. He tried for a submission with a hammerlock, a move that has brought Sabu’s uncle the Sheik victories. Sabu got to the ropes for a break. The homicidal, suicidal, genocidal, death-defying madman rolled out of the ring for a breather. Brazil followed and Abdullah Farouk immediately distracted “Tiger” Tasker. Sabu grabbed the chair he had used earlier for his moonsault and threw it at Brazil’s face. He then hit the Arabian facebuster on the floor and tossed Brazil back into the ring. He had control briefly but Brazil fought back and caught Sabu in a bear hug in the center of the ring. Sabu fought hard for a break but Brazil’s power was too much and Sabu ultimately submitted, which drew a big pop from the crowd! Brazil eyed up Farouk as he got his hand raised in victory! **½
7) In a special attraction and the first of four title bouts, NWA World Jr. Heavyweight champion Danny Hodge retained the title against Jerry Brisco after 18 minutes of great scientific wrestling. Both athletes shook hands before the bout in a sign of respect and sportsmanship. The fans were split in their support of this one, as the USWA fans who had made the road trip seemed to favor the champion while the BTW fans sided with the challenger. The two greats exchanged great mat holds back-and-forth for the first 10 minutes of the bout. Brisco seemed to have counter after counter for Hodge, wanting so badly to win the title. As the action picked up, Hodge blocked a monkey flip and tried for a submission with a Boston Crab. Brisco quickly got to the ropes before the champion could fully lock in the Crab. Brisco rallied back and tried for a Brisco Brothers’ specialty—the figure-four leglock. The fans went wild thinking they were about to see history made but Hodge eventually pulled himself to the ropes. Brisco stayed in control and executed an airplane spin for a two-count. Hodge rallied back and executed his own airplane spin for a near fall. The fans loved how the two wrestlers’ styles were so similar and each tried to outdo the other. Hodge got Brisco down on the mat and executed the Oklahoma side roll but Brisco just got a shoulder up at the last possible instant. The champion seemed frustrated at not being able to put away his challenger. That frustration led to a brief comeback by Brisco who went for a dropkick but Hodge dodged the attack. Brisco got back to his feet but was met with a knee lift. Hodge knocked him down, made a cover, and picked up the victory. Brisco recovered from the knee and got to his feet shortly after the bell, knowing that Hodge had gotten the better of him tonight. He seemed frustrated with himself but the champion again offered his hand and Brisco accepted, which the fans again appreciated! ***¾
8) Ray “The Crippler” Stevens retained the USWA Mid-America Heavyweight championship over Tommy Gilbert after eight minutes of intense action. Gilbert had son Eddie in his corner while “The Crippler” was, of course, accompanied by manager Jimmy Hart. Stevens took control at the bell and controlled the action for the first few minutes. He whipped Gilbert into the ropes and telegraphed a backdrop so Gilbert surprised him with a sunset flip for a two-count. Gilbert stayed on the offensive. He hit a back suplex on the champion and then came off the second rope with a knee drop, similar to Stevens’ own Bombs Away. He covered the champ but only got a two-count. The two men got to their feet and Gilbert had Stevens dazed after some punches. He then bounced off the ropes and came back at Stevens with the running knee lift. He knocked Stevens down and made a cover but “The Crippler” got a foot on the bottom ropes. Gilbert tried for another second rope knee drop a moment later but Stevens rolled out of the way and the Gilbert patriarch crashed hard. Stevens recovered and executed a vertical suplex for a near fall. He followed up right after that with the piledriver but Gilbert managed to kick out. Stevens hit a second piledriver and it looked like it was over right there but Gilbert kicked out at 2¾! The champ hit a third piledriver and the third time was the charm, as he scored the pin to retain the title. You have to give “The Crippler” credit—as he continues his impressive reign as Mid-America champion! ***
9) The first half of the double main event saw The Sheik defend the BTW United States Heavyweight title against Angelo Poffo. Abdullah Farouk made his fourth appearance of the evening, accompanying the champion. As is typical with Sheik matches, the action was wild from the opening bell. Sheik tried for a submission with a hammerlock but Poffo made the ropes. Sheik then went for the Camel Clutch and had it locked on for over a minute before Poffo made the ropes for a break. Poffo fought back and had the champion in trouble until Sheik bailed out of the ring. He took advantage on the outside by choking Poffo with Gary Michael Cappetta’s microphone chord while Farouk distracted “Tiger” Tasker. Sheik tossed Poffo back into the ring and then unleashed a huge fireball on the challenger! Poffo crumbled to the mat in pain. Sheik rolled on top of him into a cover as Tasker turned around to count the three. Sheik retained the U.S. title after 10 minutes of action. “Leaping” Lanny Poffo, recovered from his bout earlier on the card, ran down to the ring. He grabbed a towel and water to try and cool his father’s burns. Sheik and Farouk retreated to the locker room, while the Findlay fans pelted them with garbage! Several officials and paramedics made their way to the ring to help Angelo to the back. *¾
10) After an intermission, it was time for the second half of the double main event. The Heavenly Bodies put the USWA World Tag Team titles on the line against The Uptown Boys. Tommy Rogers and Marty Jannetty had defeated the champions Tom Prichard and Chris Candido last month in a non-title match at Independence Day Bash in Bowling Green. They were going into this match with only one loss since becoming a team back in March of this year.
The action was back-and-forth in this bout, which lasted about 20 minutes. The challengers trapped Dr. Tom in the ring midway through the bout. Rogers caught him in a sleeper and looked as if he was going to get the submission but Prichard managed to grab the middle rope for a break. Rogers tagged to Jannetty and the Uptown Boys executed the Uptown Flip. Jannetty went for a cover but “The Doctor of Desire” kicked out. Prichard managed to tag to “The Suicide Blonde” who turned things in the Bodies’ favor. The Bodies executed the Prima Donna Plunge on Jannetty but he managed to kick out. Prichard tagged back in and hit two enzuigiris on Jannetty. He went for the pin attempt but Rogers saved his partner. Jannetty rallied back and made the hot tag to Rogers, who wore down Prichard. He tagged back to Jannetty and they hit the combination press slam-splash, which is how they beat the Bodies on July 4. When he dropped Jannetty, Jannetty landed right across Dr. Tom’s nose and busted him open. He went for a cover but Jim Cornette immediately jumped up on the apron and distracted Paul Morton. Jannetty stayed cool and hit a dropkick on Prichard. He went for another cover but Candido got Morton’s attention, which allowed Cornette to enter the ring and smack Jannetty across the back with the tennis racquet. Rogers went after Cornette but was blocked from touching the manager by Mr. Hughes. Rather than risk the Tag Team titles, Rogers returned to the Uptown Boys’ corner. The Bodies took control of Jannetty for a few minutes, hitting the Flapjack on two different occasions, busting open his nose the second time. Jannetty took advantage of a mistake by Candido and again tagged Rogers. Rogers got control of Candido and got him down on the mat. He tagged Jannetty again and the Boys hit the press slam-splash. Candido was near the ropes and Cornette placed his foot on the ropes for the break. Rogers saw this and went after Cornette but was ambushed by Hughes, who hit a spike slam on the floor! Cornette then distracted Morton, as Jannetty had gone up to the top rope to fly off onto Candido. Hughes climbed up on the apron and shoved Jannetty hard, causing him to crash to the canvas. Candido picked up Jannetty and placed him on the top turnbuckle and then tagged Prichard. The Bodies hit a second Prima Donna Plunge and scored the pinfall on Jannetty to retain the World Tag Team titles! The Findlay fans were not happy about this outcome! As the Bodies, Cornette, and Hughes returned to the back, Bobby Fulton and “Flying” Fred Curry, fresh off their big win earlier on the card, came down to check on both Rogers and Jannetty. Both Uptown Boys were wounded from the war they had just experienced but were more upset about not leaving “Flag City” as the champions! ****½
