I figured now would be the perfect time to make my return to the board. Been really busy this past year learning how to be a dad and making time to play the game. Being at GCon this weekend has stoked the fire once again!
The trip from Detroit was probably the smoothest one I've ever had, so that was a great way to start, although Matt not being able to be with us was definitely a downer. Missed you, bro. After getting into Jamestown, Swarm and I arrived at Tom's house and the 3 of us traveled into downtown to have a great lunch at Jones' restaurant. Jones burgers were amazing!
Dropped off the COTG head honcho and then after a quick respite, it was off to the COTG LIVE EVENT. Who knew there was an ice arena in the middle of Jamestown? There was even a surprise appearance by Tim Dalton! Met some of the wrestlers and then the crowd started to arrive.
The show was something special. What an undertaking by Todd and Jeff! Following 2 prelim bouts, the Champions of the Galaxy characters stormed through the curtain! Seeing Thantos, Star Warrior, Wolf, Greek Gods, Brute, Massacre, Beast Rider, and Death Knight was awesome! Wolf got over with the crowd big time. He had everyone howling with him. The Gladiators were great! Both guys did a wonderful job as the galaxy's fiercest warriors!
The legends portion was pretty good, too. The crowd was really behind Beefcake (of course) and Tom/Dark Menace had the most heat and his tag team got many boos. Cool to see Beefcake cut some hair again.
Saturday was the traditional Bob Evans breakfast along with JMello, Mike Fortune, Sam, and Dayton Dave. Off to the Sheldon House we went and the reunion was on. Seeing the GCon crew (as i overheard someone say) is like a class reunion! Todd, Jeff G, Smoke and Jaron (who is like 6 & 1/2 feet tall now), Jim Steel, Jim Steinhoff, the Meleskys, Reno & Ramel, Kevin W, Jack/Gavin, Troy & Lisa, my boy Kevin Butcher, TK (who was joined by his 3 kids who played some great matches this weekend), and all the rest make the weekend truly enjoyable.
Played some great tournaments. Lost in the finals to Troy in the Z tournament as Bigfoot lost to Tombstone, but won the GWF tournament as Paganax was victorious! Made the finals of the legends tournament with the Evolve Johnny Gargano but lost to Troy who was the new Jay Broscoe.
Fast forward to Sunday and GalactiCon Cup tournament time. I drew the no. 1 pick out of the hat so I picked Chaos Supreme. Tough matches against Oracle and Bex paved the way for yet another showdown with Troy and Shayne. After racking up a lot of tokens on Shayne he uses Shayne's Fury and it looked like Chaos might be going down. As I could feel the entire crowd pulling for Chaos (we all know Troy is the big GCon heel) I had a hard time rolling the finishers but hit some add 1's and eventually got the victory!!
This made it the tri-fecta for the D-town crew as Rob took home the Cup in 2009, and Matt followed suit in 2011. Michigan is the first/only state to have 3 people win the GCon Cup. Afterwards had to fight Tom for a title belt that was sent to the Con. Tom picked Crossfire. Needless to say he didn't put up much of a fight against Chaos Supreme and the belt was quickly won.
Had a great time at GCon this year! The new set is amazing and I'm looking forward to starting my GWF fed back up. I hope everyone else had a good time at the Con!
Until next year......
