The stadium plan ran into some problems last week when the FAA and Southwest Airlines (the largest airline in terms of flights coming into and out of Las Vegas) complained that the planned stadium site was too much in proximity to the North and South runways at McCarran Airport and it sounds like that planned potential sight will no longer be possible.
The site was desired because it is land owned by UNLV (whose football team will also be playing there) and if they have to choose another location then the land would have to be purchased adding on to the total cost of the stadium. The current backup plan they are now exploring is building the stadium on UNLV's campus to avoid having to purchase land not owned by UNLV.
3 other possible stadium locations being mentioned include 2 directly on the Strip (the site of the recently imploded Riviera and the Rock N Rio site on Sahara- works for me as I live on Sahara.) The other site being mentioned is downtown at the location where the Las Vegas 51s play as the 51s are expected to get a new minor league baseball stadium next to Downtown Summerlin and then Cashman Field could get torn down and replaced by the new NFL stadium.
But I don't understand the FAA and Southwest Airlines complaints that things associated with the stadium such as fireworks, pyro, and light displays could distract planes trying to land less than 1/2 mile away. It is not an open air stadium, it is going to be a domed stadium so things like fireworks wouldn't be visible to the planes. Plus the airport is already located adjacent to the Strip- the most lit up place on the planet, so I really don't see how suddenly this stadium would be a safety distraction for the airplanes.

in Las Vegas, a new location just got offered for a possible site of the stadium for the Raiders- the Wild Wild West property location has been offered by its owners. The Wild Wild West is located just West of the Strip between the Strip and the Orleans.
New Las Vegas site emerges as leader for potential Raiders stadium
In an interesting twist the Fertitta Brothers, owners of Station Casinos, have offered up some or all of the 110 acres, of their Wild Wild West property for Stadium Consideration according to Rick Velotta of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
This potential stadium landing site is located just west of I-15 on West Tropicana and just of the Strip. With its proximity to the Strip, I-15, and the acreage of the land, it appears to check all of Mark's boxes, as well as, Sands and Majestic.
This alternate site also alleviates a possible Sands - MGM/LVCC showdown over the Riviera Site, Possible infrastructure and FAA concerns at the other Trop site, and keeps the Stadium near the strip, unlike Cashman.
"We are always considering alternatives with respect to the potential use and/or development of our 100 acres of property located adjacent to the Strip, which we believe is one of the premier undeveloped sites in Las Vegas," Richard Haskins, president of Red Rock Resorts Inc., said in a statement issued late Thursday. "As such, we would welcome a discussion with the appropriate parties regarding the possible sale of a portion of that property for purposes of developing a stadium."
Red Rock Resorts is part of the Station Casinos Umbrella and is owned by the Fertitta Brother, who also own UFC.
One other thing to note, it looks like they are also discussing the Thomas and Mack Parking area on UNLV Campus as another potential site.
With the July 11th meeting coming this Monday, the second to last meeting of the SNTIC (unless something changes), it was paramount to have the location nailed down to as few as possible. Mayor Goodman at the last meeting was adamant that the site needed to be addressed before anything else.
Bill Hornbuckle of MGM also made a sideways comment today about their Rock N Rio site,
"MGM Resorts has met with the stadium group on two occasions and had what we feel are productive discussions," Hornbuckle said in the statement.
"Our company is supportive of their efforts and has offered to participate in the partnership by making available a section of our Strip-front property north of Circus Circus. We’ve offered to carry that investment as an equity stake in the stadium at fair market value to be determined at a future date.
"That said, the greatest challenge facing the stadium concept and the committee continues to be the lack of specific detail regarding important, broader aspects of the proposal, including siting and project costs. We respect the SNTIC process and we feel the proposal made by the committee in our last meeting, including what we feel is an appropriate level of public contribution, is both fair and equitable and, if accepted, will allow the process to move forward."
Vegas Politics, gotta love it.
I still believe that the UNLV campus is most likely to be the area finally chosen as the stadium site as it doesn't involve purchasing any land that would add to the already large 1.5 billion dollars cost for building the stadium.

The key now seems to be if the NFL will let them move. Yeah, but that will be decided by a vote of the NFL owners in January and owners tend to back each other up when it comes to getting generous new stadium deals. Jerry Jones of the Cowboys and Robert Kraft of the Patriots have already voiced support for a possible Raiders move to Las Vegas and Jones also said he is confident the owners will vote yes. However there won't be a vote by NFL owners if the Nevada Assembly currently meeting in special session in Carson City doesn't approve of the hotel tax raise to fund the stadium. 28 votes are needed to pass, and they reportedly only have 27 votes. However, the Assembly is set to reconvene tomorrow morning with some lobbying to try and get that final 28th vote.

Yes, I saw the good news! They got that final 28th vote by agreeing to allow UNLV to play at the stadium on Saturdays with UNLV only having to pay the cost of operations for their games and not pay the actual higher rent as required before the bill got amended today. Mark Davis will be in Nevada on Monday when Governor Brian Sandoval signs the bill and then Davis talks to the NFL owners later on that week at their annual Fall meeting about his plans to move and the vote would take place at the following owner's meeting in January.

Here in Las Vegas this has been all over the news tonight. Although the Raiders probably wouldn't be moving here until the stadium opens in 2019 or 2020, they reportedly may start playing home preseason games (and possibly also a regular season game) in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium as early as next year. On ESPN tonight, John Clayton said while the Raiders wait as the new stadium is being built they can keep exercising one year lease options in Oakland or (according to what Clayton said) possibly move to San Antonio until the stadium in Las Vegas is built if the atmosphere in Oakland is too acrimonious over the upcoming move.
Even if something goes wrong and the NFL does not come here to Las Vegas for whatever reason, this is still a great day for me as the bill calls for a guaranteed new stadium to be built for UNLV regardless (it wouldn't be the $1.9 billion stadium without the Raiders but it would still be a new state of the art stadium) and UNLV desperately needs it instead of playing in that dump Sam Boyd out near the wetlands.

Raiders owner Mark Davis after the Nevada legislature approved the stadium plan earlier today:
“I would like to thank Governor Sandoval, the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee and the members of the Nevada Legislature on this historic day,” Davis said Friday in a statement released by the Raiders. “All parties have worked extremely hard to develop and approve this tremendous stadium project that will serve as a proud new home for the entire Raider Nation.”
