Back in the day, NFL players like Bubba Smith and Mark Gastineau took up pro boxing, with disastrous consequences. Doesn't matter how much athletic ability you may possess, or how capable your trainers may be, you need years and years of experience in a martial art before you can hope to compete as a legitimate professional. Punk is just the latest one to find this out.

Meant to say Ed "Too Tall" Jones, not Bubba Smith.
One of Gastineau's questionable victories was over pro-wrestler-turned-boxer-for-a-day Derrick Dukes, who practically did a somersault onto his back after one of Mark's lumbering punches just barely grazed him. You might say he oversold it.

Credit to him for seeing it through, but hopefully he realized like the rest of us, he's not cut out for it. I agree with natureboi, you don't just decide to be an MMA fighter in your mid thirties.

I give Punk a lot of credit through this whole process. He's been humble the whole way through. He says he plans to continue fighting but I don't see how that is a good idea or something that he would really get much personal enjoyment out of at this point. The proper competition for him is at a very low level and those promotions can't pay CM Punk money nor can they draw the crowds that would likely give him the enjoyment I think he is looking for. Honestly, I think he should maybe work really hard on his BJJ, compete for fun in grappling tournaments and see if he can get a job with UFC (or elsewhere if they won't have him) as a commentator or something. He's a natural on the mic and knows the sport pretty well. Joe Rogan is starting to step back a bit, I think Punk could be a great fit to fill his shoes.
All of that said, I think Punk fighting in the UFC was really a win-win situation for the UFC. If Punk would have won, he'd be a star. Now that Mickey Gall has won, the UFC has a bright young star on their hands. Mickey Gall seems to be very talented and relatable. He's could be the UFC's next chosen one.

Im happy for Punk that he follow through on his dream. But i think it was a mistake to walk away from Wrestling and his fans. Yeah he wouldn't be making wwe money but he'd still make a killing.
