Owen was unlikely going to ever win the title (unless it was a quick transition reign) but it would have been interesting. He was a classic wrestler born in the wrong era guy. He could have been awesome in the mid 2000s either in WWE or TNA. I'm inclined to agree with this, though Eddie Guerrero and Benoit got runs and they were also smaller guys, so I'd like to think, had Owen lived, he may have gotten a shot at a run in the early/mod 2000's. Who knows though.

My three picks:
Don Muraco (should have beaten Bob Backlund even for a short reign circa 1981. No reason Backlund had to go nearly five years as champ save for that brief loss to Antonio Inoki) Roddy Piper (I still feel that he should have gone over Hulk Hogan at some point, similar to how Muraco should have gone over Backlund, if even for a short run) Ted Dibiase (I know he "bought" the title but again he should have been given a run at some point, whether it be going over Hogan or Savage)

I honestly think Owen might well have been retired by the point Eddie and Chris were getting their pushes.

Ted Dibiase for all his skill Pre-WWE in Mid-South, etc. should have been given a decent 6 month run or so as WWE Champ (not buying title) but actually winning it. The Million $ gimmick got in the way some of how technically gifted Ted was and how he could carry a match in any situation.

I remember hearing Cornette speak about why Dibiase never got a run with the NWA strap and if the story he told was indeed the case, it really is a shame. Of course I remember Dibiase best from my childhood as the Million Dollar Man. In a lot of ways, that's how I'll always think of him, but now as an adult I've come to really appreciate his pre-WWE work, especially after the heel turn around 82-84 (a little fuzzy on the exact date of his heel run).

I honestly think Owen might well have been retired by the point Eddie and Chris were getting their pushes. Possibly, but I could of seen the WWE giving him a token run as champ as he was nearing the end of his in-ring career. Who knows though. Its one of those things that we'll never get to know.
