LOW All-Star Wrestling (Episode 94) (Card #1351)
PWI Newswire with Bill Apter:
“Welcome wrestling fans to another edition of PWI Newswire and I’m your host Bill Apter bringing you all of the latest news from throughout LOW. First up I want to congratulate both Kings Road United and the IWA for hosting two major events which have come to mark the midway point of each year. The finals of the third annual Real World Tag League at the Seibu Dome in Seibu, Japan, featured an incredible showdown between nine-time LOW World tag team champions the Road Warriors and Stan “The Lariat” Hansen & Bruiser Brody. After Hansen and Brody injured “Precious” Paul Ellering the night before in Tokyo, courtesy of a Lariat by Hansen, the Road Warriors were thirsting for revenge. They took it a little too far, though, and wound up being disqualified for double press slamming Hansen through a table. Hansen and Brody were declared the winners and now will receive a shot at the LOW World tag team titles currently held by the Midnight Express.
Hansen suffered a back injury in that deciding match forcing him and Brody to miss out on challenging for the belts at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY (Card #1353) so instead they will get their championship opportunity back in Japan at Tokyo’s Budokan Hall (Card #1364). I had the opportunity to speak to manager Jim Cornette and he was livid saying that his Midnight Express should not have to face “those barbarians” and claimed that the disqualification win by Hansen and Brody should negate the title shot. LOW Commissioner Teddy Long and the Board of Directors have already signed off on the match so Cornette and his men, if they are still champions by then, will have their work cut out for them.
The IWA presented Supercard of Honor 6 at Turner Field in Atlanta, GA, and the event was nothing short of exciting from beginning to end. The main event saw the “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson triumph over challenger Jay Lethal, with the latter being without the services of his manager Percy Pringle III who earlier was suspended by IWA Commissioner David Marquez for his out of control actions while SCU were battling Lance Hoyt & Brodie Lee of the Pringle Dynasty. Congrats also to ACH on becoming a two-time IWA J-Crown champion with his win over Joey Janela and to Drew Galloway for winning his Loser leaves the IWA match over Kenny King.
There has been no rivalry more intense and personal than the one between Randy “Macho Man” Savage and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper in the CWA. The two will meet in a Steel Cage match on the upcoming MSG card in hopes to settle things. Piper, who has really gotten colorful of late, will be on the broadcast today hosting Savage’s brother, “Leaping” Lanny Poffo, in a special edition of Piper’s Pit. That one promises to be very heated and will only add to the bad feelings between the two sides.
For those who love classic technical wrestling matches, the match between Bob Backlund and Kurt Angle at the Seibu Dome is one you must seek out if you have not seen it already. Both men brought their “A” games and that resulted in a technical masterpiece. Both have been signed to contracts with LOW and I can now announce where each man is headed. Angle will be competing in the CWA while Backlund will compete in Golden Age Wrestling. I expect that the two will quickly rise to the top of their respective companies and that will be exciting to watch.
Finally, I am thrilled to announce the news that the competition for the LOW Tex-Arkana Television title, currently held by Dutch Savage, is going to be heating up by way of a brand new lottery system to determine challengers. I spoke to LOW Commissioner Teddy Long about this and he said that the lottery system will also increase the title defense schedule for the champion. Long said that every wrestler competing in LOW is eligible and that the first random challenger was determined to be Bobby Fulton of The Fantastics who will challenge Savage for the title in the third hour of the broadcast today. Well, that’s all for this week so enjoy the rest of the show and I will see you at the matches…”
WMC-TV5 Studios – Memphis, TN (Hour One) - Announcers: Lance Russell & Dave Brown
* Lance Russell and Dave Brown were attempting the show open when “The Franchise” Shane Douglas of ECW, along with Francine, interrupted. Douglas was upset over his loss to Battle Kat on the last episode of ASW and demanded that he come to the ring for a rematch. Russell said that he wasn’t even sure if Battle Kat was available and that perhaps Douglas should petition LOW for a rematch the proper way. Douglas was livid and he and Francine headed to the ring where he said he would remain until his challenge was answered.
LR: “Well partner it looks like Douglas is going to try and hold this show up until he gets what he wants. Can we get security out here?”
DB: “While we await that here is what is coming up on this hour of the broadcast. The feature bout will have Koko B. Ware taking on a newcomer to LOW in “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters. In addition to that we have appearances by The Quebecers, Sam Houston and former three-time LOW World Heavyweight champion “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles.”
LR: “Wait, Dave, it looks like Battle Kat is here and is going to answer the challenge from Douglas. Can he make it two wins in a row over “The Franchise”? Let’s go up to the ring and find out.”
1) Shane Douglas (with Francine) defeated Battle Kat
* This looked to be another upset in the making as Battle Kat dominated from the outset, including nearly pinning Douglas with a flying head scissors. Francine argued with the referee while also urging Douglas to get into it. Douglas finally made a counter and then hit the Pittsburgh Plunge on Battle Kat but pulled him up before the three count. Russell and Brown agreed that it could be a mistake but Douglas kept on top to the finish which came when he scored the pin with a Power Bomb. A defiant Douglas kicked Battle Kat afterward while celebrating with Francine.
2) The Quebecers defeated Beef Candy
* PCW stars The Quebecers, Jacques Rougeau & Pierre Carl Oullett, took on ASW newcomers Beef Candy, Richie Slade & Flex McCallion, in what was a great tag team bout. Coming in from Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, Beef Candy proved to be quite troublesome for The Quebecers who had to dig down deep to take this one. There was also the problem of Playboy Buddy Rose, who was not scheduled to appear, joining Russell and Brown at the announce table distracting The Quebecers with taunts. The Quebecers finally put Beef Candy away with the Tower of Quebec, as Jacques covered McCallion for the pin, and then chased Rose out of the studio.
3) Sam Houston defeated Wild Bill White
* The popular Sam Houston of ACW had his hands full taking on veteran journeyman wrestler Wild Bill White. The double tough White had him on the defensive several times, including picking p a two count with the Running Power Slam. Houston showed great resilience and battled back before hitting his trademark Bulldog to score the pin.
4) AJ Styles defeated Johnny Rodz
* ACW star AJ Styles lived up to his “Phenomenal” nickname in this match with the “Unpredictable” Johnny Rodz. Styles dominated the bout and, after a Pele Kick for a near fall, he executed the Styles Clash on Rodz to score the pin. Styles stopped by the announce table post-match and said he is looking forward to his rematch with Harley Race in Augusta, GA (Card #1352) and hopes to deliver a big win for his home state fans.
5) Chris Masters (with The Grand Wizard) defeated Koko B. Ware
* The feature match saw “The Birdman” Koko B. Ware of the CWA face “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters, who recently signed with the CWA under the guidance of manager The Grand Wizard of Wrestling. This was the debut for Masters and The Grand Wizard extolled the virtues of his “Masterpiece” at the announce table. Ware looked great here including picking up a big near fall with the Brainbuster. Masters bounced back applying the Masterlock but Ware got into the ropes for a break. That was a tease for what came later as Masters, after unleashing a strong attack, applied the Masterlock again and won it via submission.
The Sportatorium - Tampa, FL (Hour Two) - Announcer: Gordon Solie
GS: “Thanks Lance and Dave, that was a terrific first hour of wrestling and now we bring you hour two from the sunshine state. Coming up we have some great tag team action plus an appearance by the one and only Gorgeous George of Golden Age Wrestling. First up, however, I would like to welcome in a gentleman I have known for a long time by the name of Sir Oliver Humperdink.”
OH: “Thank you Gordon and it is good to see you again, the pleasure is all yours.”
GS: “Well I don’t know about that but what brings you here today Mr. Humperdink.”
OH: “Mister? I like that keep it up. Anyway, I am here to announce that I am leaving the CWA and bringing the House of Humperdink down to Atlantic Coast Wrestling. Coming with me is the One Man Gang and in addition to that I have purchased the contracts of Abdullah the Butcher and the Missing Link from Rock Riddle.”
GS: “That is a formidable assemblage of talent but may I ask what about Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team, Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas?”
OH: “I’m glad you asked that Gordon. I have left WGTT in the hands of a talented gentleman but I am not at liberty to discuss that. Let’s just say that they will be well taken care of in the CWA and I would not be surprised to see them holding the LOW World tag team titles soon.”
GS: “Ok, well we will leave it at that and go to the ring for our first match.”
1) Diamond Dallas Page, Don Muraco & Mr. Hughes defeated Ron Hutchison, Robbie Ellis & Nacho Barrera
* The trio of Diamond Dallas Page, Don Muraco & Mr. Hughes, who make up Feel The Bang Enterprises in ACW, faced Ron Hutchison, Robbie Ellis & Nacho Barrera in the hour two opener. FTB worked great as a unit, though Ellis in particular gave them some trouble. In the end, though, it was DDP hitting the Diamond Cutter on Hutchison for the pin and a decisive win.
As FTB headed towards the announce table, Solie quipped “As great as these matches are on TV, They’re that much better live at your local arena. So, get out and watch them.” DDP said that FTB have an open contract for the next ACW card in Augusta, GA, and they dared Mike Graham to take t if he could find two guys to team with. Solie said that shouldn’t be a problem for Graham resulting in laughter from DDP and company.
2) Steve Williams & Terry Gordy defeated Double-X
* This one was over in record time as the ACW team of Steve “Dr. Death” Williams & Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy took out Double-X, Mr. X & Mr. X II, with a double football tackle at the bell. Williams then delivered an Elbow Drop on Mr. X for the pin. As they headed to the back, Doc and Gordy bumped into Stars & Stripes who were headed to the ring for the next match…
3) Frank Dalton & Bruiser Costa defeated Stars & Stripes by DQ
* The popular ACW team of Stars & Stripes, The Patriot & Marcus Alexander Bagwell, were ready for action against the veteran pairing of Frank Dalton & Bruiser Costa. In fact, they dominated the bout which included The Patriot hitting Uncle Slam on Dalton for a near fall with Costa breaking up the pin. Stars & Stripes then went for a double-team attack but Steve Williams & Terry Gordy ran in jumping Costa and Dalton! That resulted in Stars & Stripes being disqualified for the outside interference. They were livid and went after Doc and Gordy brawling back to the locker room. Solie then noted that the two teams are scheduled to meet on the next ACW card and that it could be a very explosive situation.
4) Dan the Dad defeated Gorgeous George (with Cherie Dupre)
* A major upset occurred as ASW newcomer Dan the Dad out of St. Louis, MO, defeated GAW star Gorgeous George. It all started at the announce table where Danny Hodge, also of Golden Age Wrestling, joined Solie on commentary. George was disgusted by his presence along with having to face a “poor quality opponent”. When George finally entered the ring, Hodge excused himself and went to ringside to cheer on Dan the Dad.
At an opportune moment, Hodge distracted George allowing Dan the Dad to execute a Belly to Back Suplex for a snake eyes pin. George was livid as the crowd went wild over his defeat. Adding insult to injury, Hodge dropkicked George out of the ring prompting George to storm over to the announce table and challenge him to a match in Detroit on the next GAW card, a challenge that Hodge happily accepted.
5) Powers of Pain (with Captain Lou Albano) defeated George South & Jake Milliman
* The Powers of Pain, The Warlord & The Barbarian, closed out hour two taking on George South & Jake “The Milkman” Milliman. This was a brutal display by the Powers of Pain, which pleased their manager Captain Lou Albano who ranted at ringside. The Barbarian mercifully ended it deathjump style with a Flying Cross Body Block on Milliman for the pin. As Albano boasted about his men dominating the CWA, Solie signed off saying “so long from the sunshine state”.
Mid-Hudson Civic Center - Poughkeepsie, NY (Hour Three) - Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby Heenan
GM: “Thank you very much Gordon and now we present hour three of ASW and I can tell you that they are literally hanging from the rafters…”
BH: “Wait a minute, Monsoon, I have to interrupt you for you see I have a very special guest here in the real LOW World Heavyweight champion “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers!”
GM: “The last time we saw you out here on ASW you were tapping out to Billy Red Lyons, not to mention having previously lost your championship to Johnny Valentine.”
BH: “Monsoon, how could you show such disrespect to…”
BR: “I got this one, Bobby, and I won’t take long because you have a show to get to. It is true that I have suffered some recent setbacks but now I am ready to reclaim my rightful spot at the top as I will be getting my rematch with Valentine for the LOW World Heavyweight title upcoming at Cobo Hall in Detroit, MI (Card #1356). I plan on taking my title back and if anyone has anything to say about it, including you Monsoon, I will see them in the ring.”
GM: “OK you heard it direct from the “Nature Boy” so now let’s go to the ring for our important opening contest.”
1) LOW Tex-Arkana Television Title: Dutch Savage© defeated Bobby Fulton to retain the title
* After referee James Beard delivered his pre-match instructions, Bobby Fulton and defending champion Dutch Savage shook hands. Fulton, who teams with Tommy Rogers as The Fantastics in ACW, was looking to capitalize on his lottery draw and win the title. He nearly pulled it off as he dominated for a good stretch getting two counts with a dropkick and a Fantastic Cradle. Savage took it outside late and assaulted Fulton softening him up for his devastating finisher, the Running Piledriver. Savage scored the pin and retained the title in his version two defense. Savage found out later that his next lottery draw opponent will come from the GWA as Red Bastien will challenge for the belt at Cobo Hall in Detroit.
2) Dick Hutton defeated Rusty Brooks
* Golden Age Wrestling star Dick Hutton put on a clinic taking on Rusty Brooks who had him outweighed by nearly one-hundred pounds. He put his well chronicled amateur skills and leverage to good use in dominating the action. Brooks showed some resilience but ultimately Hutton put him away via submission with the Abdominal Stretch.
* “Standing by are three superstars with plenty on their minds” said Monsoon. That led to a pre-taped promo with Hillbilly Jim and Bear Country, Bear Boulder & Bear Bronson of ECW. Jim said: “Fellers you have some tough opponents tonight but Yee-haw I know you can take em. You boys are quickly climbing to the top of that big ol’ mountain and before long you are going to be in contention for those LOW World tag team titles. Now let’s go win that one quick so we can get back to granny’s house and eat some good fixins!”
3) Long Riders defeated Jim Powers & Kenny Jay
* “Let’s go down to our ring announcer” said Monsoon. Unfortunately for him, the Long Riders, “Wild” Bill Irwin & Scott “Hog” Irwin, were using their whip to taunt the ring announcer. Their opponents, Jim Powers & “Sodbuster” Kenny Jay, had seen enough and intervened. The quick start saw Powers almost pin Wild Bill with a dropkick. The Long Riders gained control after that, though, isolating Jay with Scott really laying in a beating. The merciful finish saw Wild Bill hit a Double Sledge on Jay for the pin as Heenan praised the teamwork of the brother team from ACW.
4) Bear Country (with Hillbilly Jim) defeated Pete Doherty & Manimal
* Bear Country, Bear Boulder & Bear Bronson, accompanied by their ally Hillbilly Jim, made quick work of the “Duke of Dorchester” Pete Doherty & Manimal. In fact, Manimal never got into the ring before Bear Country planted Doherty with the Elevator Drop three moves in. Bear Bronson made the cover for the pin and afterward Jim joined them in doing a jig to “Don’t Go Messin’ with a Country Boy”. Heenan was disgusted while Monsoon called for another go around as the show went to a commercial break.
5) Piper’s Pit with Lanny Poffo:
* This highly anticipated segment closed the show as “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, accompanied by his bodyguard “The Ace” Cowboy Bob Orton, hosted Lanny Poffo in Piper’s Pit. An irate Poffo dared Piper the previous week to show up and discuss the rivalry between him, his brother Randy Savage, and Piper and Orton. With Piper and Savage set to meet in a Steel Cage match on the upcoming card at MSG, the tension was thick. Savage, in fact, was barred from the building in order to keep him and Piper apart.
Piper had the nerve to say, “I’m not all that acquainted with you” so Poffo degraded him with a poem finishing up with “Savage will drop you like your kilt when your bodyguard is behind you.” Piper turned beet reed and lured Poffo towards him allowing Orton to strike from behind with his cast. Piper then held Poffo up allowing Orton to deliver a cast strike to the head. Poffo was busted open and Piper, sensing a moment, held him up by the hair turning Poffo’s bloody face to the camera while taunting Savage. He said that was nothing compared to what he will do inside the cage and when all is said and done that Savage and his “loser brother” will flee LOW for good. Monsoon said, “give me a break!” as the show ended.
