This was from New Japan during the height of the NJ vs UWF feud. Akira Maeda was one of the original 'defectors' from NJPW who helped launch the 'shoot style' UWF promotion (with the components of hard strikes in safe places and more of an emphasis on grappling), At this point the UWF was defunct...but its image was used to create an inter-promotional war angle. Here the colorful (and controversial) Maeda represented the style at its apex. Tatsumi Fujinami is seen carrying the banner of the 'strong style' tradition. With the underlying stories of promotional pride and competing beliefs in the superiority of their respective styles this match stands as a historically significant viewing for any student of 80's era puro.
