Al Vass, professional wrestler and referee, dies at 86 Al Vass, whom many may have known as Mr. Brooklyn, a wrestler, a referee, and even the security guard at the St. George Library, who spoke passionately about wrestling and its history, died Friday evening at Staten Island University Hospital North. He was 86 years old. Vass was born in Brooklyn and later lived in Queens before settling in Great Kills in 1961. He got his start working out at the Adonis Health Club in Brooklyn, a well-known gym, where a wrestler called Dollar Morgan, got him interested. Vass “once upon a time” entered a bodybuilding contest, where he was named “Mr. Brooklyn.” During one of his workouts, Vass met Abe Coleman, who would be the wrestler who taught him “how to take the falls, take the bumps and the bounces." Vass went for a ride with Coleman to Pittsburgh, where he was going to appear on a popular local TV show, “Studio Wrestling.”
