WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson Dies at Age 79 WWE announced Wednesday that Hall of Fame wrestler and longtime WWE employee Pat Patterson died at the age of 79. Patterson is perhaps best known for being crowned the first intercontinental champion in WWE history in 1979, but he also worked behind the scenes in WWE for decades as one of WWE Chairman Vince McMahon's most trusted advisers. The Montreal native was known as one of the best in the business at coming up with finishes for matches, and he also created one of the most popular and significant matches in WWE history in the Royal Rumble.

RIP Mr. Pat Patterson, the first Intercontinental champ. The word legend could definitely be applied to him based on his accomplishments in the ring and behind the scenes. He created the Royal Rumble which is a match everyone looks forward to each January. Now that is legendary.
He was among the notable faces in the WWF when I first started watching regularly in early 1981, though he was more of an announcer than an active wrestler at that point. I came in right around the time of the Cobra Clutch challenge with Sgt. Slaughter which of course led to the infamous Alley Fight between them at MSG. Thinking of it that was probably the first real television angle I saw as Pat seemingly broke the hold which led to Slaughter assaulting him.
Sadly I missed that MSG show but I did attend my first ever MSG show the following month with Pat as the referee for a Bob Backlund vs. Angelo Mosca world title match. Great memories for sure.

Pat's passing hit me. I had just spoken about him with the Legends team on a recent podcast - listed him in my top 3 wish list. His run in San Francisco is legendary - teaming with Stevens, the breakup, the feud... The whole 9. Then reforming in the AWA. Landing in the WWF, first Intercontinental Champ, the Boot Camp matches and Alley Fight with Slaughter, all the genius finishes, the Royal Rumble, the Screwjob... The karaoke. Pat was special. "Accepted" is a fantastic read and one I wasn't prepared to enjoy and love as much as I did and do. I met him ever so briefly at the first Starrcast. Oh to have sat under that learning tree. Luckily, like Dusty, his influence will be felt for years and years, from generation to generation. Rest easy.

All Star Wrestling are very sad to hear today of the passing of long term British Wrestling Official Mal Mason. Mal has been part of All Star since the very early days and will be very much missed by wrestlers and fans alike.
